Hey folks,

I have been looking over your site for awhile now and used it in the past when I had what turned out to be a R4i clone (www.r4i.cn) cart for my DS Lite.

I am looking to replace that and purchased a N3DS this past weekend.

My N3DS is version 9.9.0-26U.

I have looked over the comparison charts for the flashcards and it would appear for the N3DS that the SKY3DS+ appears to be the most hassle free. I looked at their website it was updated on 02/23/2016 that their flashcard was working on 3DS V10.6.0-31.

Before purchasing said flashcard, do I need to prep or do anything special with my N3DS? Some of the guides I have seen and read appear to be for CFW or at least partially used to downgrade my system back to 9.2.

Also with the flashcards, do I still need to update the FW of my N3DS for any reason?

I have done my share of PSPs and PS3s awhile back and once you got them on CFW, you never touched the official firmware again as it usually disables the CFW.

Hello..

I bought my first flash cart a year ago with my New3ds XL: a Sky3ds. I could play many games with it but I realised that I can't play games from other regions. (Like Inazuma Eleven EUR series) Also I couldn't play EShop titles with the Sky3ds. But I was happy, because I couldn't downgrade my New 3DS that time, and Sky3ds was the ONLY flash cart solution to the games I want. A year later Nintendo put new encoding to their games and I can no longer use my cart to play new games with it. Then they just released a new cart for new games. I was going to buy the new cart but this time I had another option: downgrade my New3dsXL and install a CFW!

Here's my thoughts on these:
Using flashcart is easy. Sky3ds+ is easier than the previous model, so all you need to put some games on it and play. You can update your 3ds if you want, some games require newer firmware. But if you update your 3ds, you can't downgrade and install a CFW until someone finds another exploit to do so.

9.2 is needed to install a CFW, so you don't need that with a flash cart.

You don't need to update your FW for a flashcart. But new games may need newer firmwares.

PSP CFW is kind of different than the 3DS CFW. PSP run cracked firmware in order to run the games. But it replaced the offical firmware of PSP. With 3ds, the situation is a little different. You have a genuine 3ds with a 9.2 firmware. And you install a CFW on your memory card, and run that CFW with the help of an exploit in 9.2. And then you can update your CFW to 10.6, while your 3ds core firmware stays 9.2.

It's not that hard lol

You can use emunand to use the newest firmware.
Also you can use Arm9loaderhax to have a sysnand CFW without emunand so you can update.
Whatever, not my money to waste. :)

@kopgamer I will keep that in mind. I have been reading over a guide I found on a 3DSHacks subreddit. It does seem to be a bit more involved than my PSP/PS3 was to do. Mind that I did my PSP 3000 so I didn't have to do a Pandora Battery or anything hardware mod related to it. Don't exactly like taking a razor knife to a Lithium battery.

Reading over the CFW guide there does appear to be points made on certain steps to do them EXACTLY as noted or else I could end up bricking my system. Is there any risk of a flashcart bricking the system or just bricking the flashcart itself?

Unless I am missing something and I could be as it is almost 5AM my time..... with a flashcart, can I just remove it and place in a retail cart for online play and then put the flashcart back in for my single player games? With CFW doesn't that negate all online play?? I know with Sony's stuff, once you put CFW on it, online play is simply a no go.

Buying a SKY3DS+ now after all the "stability" updates from Nintendo is not such a bad idea for homebrew as Cubic Ninja is the only entry point that resists all the new firmware so far. And considering the price of the game and the price of a SKY3DS+ with all its advantages, if you can afford it I think it's still a good bargain.
Now if you already have a CFW it's a lot less interesting but the advantages remain. At this point it's more a matter of choice than anything.

I personally use both.

If you want to play online with Sky3DS there's extra steps you have to take. You need to own a 3DS cartridge and a powersaves in order to extract the private header, then you need to inject it in each rom using some software. If you don't do this you will be banned from online in all games (including your real cartridges) for periods of around two weeks.

However, you won't be banned if you use CFW and install all your games from CIA files, as CIA files don't use headers at all.

If you could find someone providing the services in your country you could send your console to them to get downgraded and set up for about half the cost of a Sky3DS. Or, you could do it yourself for free. Buying a Sky3DS to play games with is like buying a $10,000 golf cart to go off-road trekking with instead of a $2,000 four wheel drive (or building your own four wheel drive from free parts). Doesn't make sense!

You don't need to inject anything with the SKY3DS+. With the latest firmware you just have to put your private header in settings.txt. And then it's download, copy and play.

It's that comparaison that doesn't make sense. You make it sound like CFW is perfect and SKY3DS+ is overly expensive.

Don't get me wrong, I think downgrade and CFW is a better solution but buying a SKY3DS+ won't make you a complete moron. It's a good product and it "only" cost the price of two games. Considering that you will play all games for free I don't see the rip off.

If we're taling about hassle free, SKY3DS+ is the best choice.
But keep in mind that using only the SKY3DS+, you'll be committing to the following:
  • You'll have to keep your 3DS up to date, as soon as games or apps like the browser require it
  • Updating your 3DS gets you to the point of no return (no downgrade), so no way to change your mind and use CFW
  • For more hassle free, you could use retail cartridges for online play
Now, if you go the CFW way, you could use it in conjunction with the SKY3DS+ for the following advantages:
  • You can use an emulated system (EmuNAND) to keep you 3DS "up to date", in the eyes of the games and apps that require it
  • Updating your EmuNAND won't break or restrict your slightly hacked real system (SysNAND)
  • For playing online you could use games in .cia format or retail cartridges
  • You still can use SKY3DS+ to play games in .3ds format without installing them, or as a backup for running *hax that require retail cartridges

Thank you all for your input. I went ahead and ordered a SKY3DS+ this afternoon. I do believe I am going to go ahead and do the CFW route as well because I see that you can convert the .3ds into .cia which doesn't require the private header like the .3ds will. I do have a retail cart of Fire Emblem: Awakening but looking over how to pull the private header off of it, I think just converting it would be better.

But it isn't simply that Sky3DS is less of a hassle as you have the option of sending your console to someone and having them downgrade and set up CFW for you for less than the price of the Sky3DS. Hence the $2000 4WD as opposed to the $10000 golf cart. The golf cart is only the right choice if you actually want to play golf (in this case if you need access to a lot of original game cartridges like several versions of CN or OoT or if you test game hacking with HANS etc.
And yes, for users that are just interested in playing games, CFW *is* the perfect choice and Sky3DS is the overly expensive option that lets you do less stuff.

You missed my point, but nevermind it's internet after all.

I guess i didn't really get it. Feel free to pm me with an explanation! I am open to other ideas
Let me give you a better analogy :
- CFW = rape to have sex
- SKY3DS = paying hooker to have sex

You see, with rape you don't have to pay, but more risky. Doing it with a hooker are safer, but you have to pay. Both are getting sex. So yeah you get my point?

You can still pay a skilled person to do it for you. So no risk. So - like going on a date that costs less than a prostitute but there's a small risk they might call date rape even if you do everything right?

Cheapo pirates have to justify their decisions by claiming anything that costs money is not worth investing in. From an end-user standpoint the sky3ds+ is easy to use and pretty much foolproof whereas CFW is a time consuming risky route to take.

So trying to downgrade my N3DS tonight...... cannot downgrade to 9.2.0-20U whenever I use the sysUpdater I keep getting a softbrick..... I have been reading around and apparently I have to get to 10.3 using Julian's sysUpdater.... then downgrade to 9.2 with Safe sysUpdater?? Does that sound right?

I found the CIA's from that ISO site and the MD5 there doesn't match the MD5 here or on a reddit guide I have been making reference too...... Should I be worried I have the wrong files? It doesn't seem likely though....
