Aha! That explains it. I used Asia81's toolkit because I extracted with newer braindump and it gave me a .cxi file. I scrolled up this page and saw the link to the older version, so I was already using that this attempt. Sounds like I'll be good to go, but it's nice to know WHY things went wrong before so that it doesn't happen again.
If the problem really was using Asia81's toolkit, the problem is that files with Japanese names were likely corrupted.
Rightright, that's what Sachi's post said right before mine. I didn't quote it because there was a grand total of two words in the post that weren't themselves quoted, but since it's a new page it made it a little unclear. I edited the (lack of) quote into my post for posterity.

Interesting, well, I got my early copy of Birthright this morning from a friend, haven't had a chance to hack it yet, but since Japanese saves work I assume simply using the same japanese hacked files should work.
Hm. All right. Then do you know what could cause the missing support convos? It's like the game knows there should be a support there, but the actual contents of the support are missing.
Ah, looking over your post again, it seems you activated a Chrom/Viron C Support. Unfprtunately a convo hasn't been implemented for them yet, and if there is no convo the background loads briefly.
