after replacing the elf file in /rxTools/sys/patches/ folder:
Cyclo DS iEvO - works
yup, M3i ZERO [GMP-Z003] works
Hyperkin Game Genie [DS] - boots the 3 Game & watch collections game.

Did any of those games require my launcher to boot or did they boot with just the TWL_FIRM patches?

BTW here's what an R4 Revolution looks like in the recent rxTools with the TWL_FIRM patches (it doesn't work though)

Awesome work! Installed aurora's n3ds twlfirm and this app and my Acekard2i is fully working on my rei emunand n3ds.
Unsurprisingly, my DS-Xtreme won't work, but I think they were always blocked on the DSi.
My Acekard 2.1 never worked on DSi, but I can now use it thanks to @Aurora Wright's patched TWL_FIRM and @Apache Thunder's launcher.

So a flashcart being "always blocked on the DSi" doesn't automatically disqualify it from working via this method.

What does disqualify it however, is not having a valid icon and banner.
Stop wasting your time. That's never gonna happen.
While @Normmatt may have said that back in November last year, this post from yesterday seems to directly contradict it (he's made it clear he isn't willing to help though).
Nah you can just disable the dsi specific hardware other than the sdmmc so from the games perspective its running on a DS.

Well I'm not quite sure that's a contradiction. The game will still have to read its resources from the cartridge and as he said it's not a simple task to redirect to NAND/SD.

Honestly, the one thing I'm interested in the most is exactly what makes autobooting DS/DSLite flashcarts not-work and what it'd take to make them yes-work.
I've been looking into it out of curiosity and I can't really find a whole lot of relevant information.
The way it's put in the OP and the information in GBATek make it sound like the header data in the old flashcarts is valid and simply uses the Autostart flag to avoid having to make and store icon data for it.
I feel like I'm way off track, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if I got literally everything wrong. Can anybody explain in further detail?

being that the banner is the only thing that seems to be breaking some carts, I'd be curious if there's not any way to forcibly inject a banner upon cartridge insertion if one isn't detected, or if there's some specific reasoning we can't do that?

M3i Zero (old revision, patched out on 3DS as of 2.2, and on DSi as of 1.4.4) works with just the whitelist hack, but also works with the loader.

AceKard 2i (also old revision, patched on DSi 1.4.3, never worked on 3DS) works with loader.

Time to dig up my R4 clone that was patched on DSi 1.4.0...

I installed patched twl firm to my sysnand as well, should I fix it or leave it as is? R4 works amazingly from emunand on reinand

You do not need to patch TWL_FIRM on sysnand. Infact doing so prevents you from ever using it as an entry point for hax or booting legit DS/DSi titles outside of CFW. You'd have to be in CFW to use DS/TWL titles on sysnand until you restore original TWL_FIRM.
