Sonic 'Live-Action and Animation Hybrid' Movie to be released in 2018

hqdefault.jpg

Sonic the Hedgehog has gone through a lot and the Blue Blur has a lot more coming apparently. In an interview with The Worldfolio, Sega president and CEO Hajime Satomi has revealed that a 'live-action and animation hybrid' movie featuring the famous blue hedgehog is in the works with Sony Pictures for a release in 2018.

Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.

The recent Sonic Boom TV show proved to be quite successful and a second season should be on the way. However, with the 'live-action and animation hybrid' genre, what should we expect? In any case, we've got 2 years before seeing the Blue Blur on big screen and to learn more about it

This is the final nail in the coffin. My hopes for a Sonic Generations 2 are dead since they're focusing on.. this and Sonic Boom. *ugh*

im not going to get hyped for this, although i'm not thinking its going to be terrible, remember, the sonic tv shows and movies have never been bad, they were all at the very least decent, even sonic x, even though its english dub was trash because of 4kids. literally the main thing we have to worry about is how the movie will actually look, its going to be very hard to get sonic to look like he belongs in that world if its going to be how i think it is, resembling the alvin and the chipmunks live action movies, which personally i enjoyed the first two, all we can do is wait and see. its image is literally the main concern

Wait a second, did I just see Doug Walker at 05:42?
That you did. Along with other random Internet celebrity cameos. I would like to believe it was their idea of bringing in more views should the animation itself suck.

For a free short film on a smaller budget as fan works, it's not bad in execution. Just unfortunately horrible in concept.

I guess these kind of things are much more cheaper and much more profitable than publishing Phantasy Star Online 2 in US/EU.

Somebody just needs to smack that hedgehog with a hammer and put him out if his misery.

I recently tried playing the 16 bit sonic games again recently and it occurred to me, it's not that they can't make Sonic good anymore, it just never was very good. It moves to fast to be a good platformer, and there are way to many obstacles for it to be good at moving fast.

I completely agree. I think at the time it was seen as such a feat of technical achievement that a game could move so fast with so much going on that nobody stopped to wonder whether it was actually fun. I grew up on the Amiga which was, for the most part, the underdog of the computer and gaming industry. I would often read reviews of Amiga platformers which were hailed as the Sonic of the Amiga platform, and they would frequently be criticised for providing an exhilarating thrill-ride which ended in unavoidable spike-death. I remember thinking "yeah, that sounds exactly like Sonic to me." (Kid Chaos comes to mind as an example)

You can't enjoy a breathtakingly fast game if you're constantly worried about what insta-death snare is waiting around every corner.

Your right, they don't all need to be the same. But sonics whole thing was that he moves super fast, that was cool at the time, but made for a horrible platform experience.

You either blow by the levels making them boring and unremarkable hoping you don't hit something, or take your time and platform through it and forget the aspect that made sonic unique.

The levels should have been designed in a way to allow you to go through at top speed and still allow for awesome, platforming. On a whole the levels are pretty Meh.

I also agree that at the time as a kid sonic was amazing because there was nothing like it. Looking at it now I realize the game is not so great.

I degree. Not every platformer needs to be the same.
I don't think that's what's being argued. Diversity within and between genres can only be a good thing. But Sonic's mechanic was fundamentally conflicted. A game which moves super-fast and then puts unavoidable obstacles in the way is just frustrating.

I can think of two very different games which strike the balance much better than Sonic ever did. Rick Dangerous was a platformer which was littered with often invisible and unavoidable traps which killed the main character instantly. But speed was not the goal. Pixel perfect positioning, perfect timing and memorising the layouts of the levels and the traps was the only way to succeed. It was often frustrating, but at least when you failed you knew it was your own fault after the first time you fell into a hidden trap. It was almost a cerebral experience.

In contrast, the Donkey Kong Country series (and in particular DKC Returns) provides an exhilarating thrill-ride without any of the hidden danger or insta-death frustration. Levels like Barrel Canon Canyon, Mine Cart Carnage and Snow Barrel Blast allowed you to whizz along at great speed without fearing an unavoidable death trap where you inevitably land. This was because there were no unavoidable death traps in these games. The beginning of a speed run was controlled by the player (e.g. the timing of a barrel blast) and to a certain extent so was the trajectory, but you always knew that the game would not be cruel enough to throw you into a trap at the end. That meant you could enjoy the ride and catch your breath at the end before the next part. DKC Returns took this to the next level with 2.5D, meaning you could blast through huge tree trunks, temples, pirate ships and more, all at great speed.

Where Sonic went wrong was trying to be fast and dangerous. The combination was exciting for a little while, but annoying for a long while - exactly the opposite to how gaming should feel.

Sonic has a special place in my heart, considered Sonic 1 was the first video game I ever played, and Sonic Spinball was the first game I owned. I loved every bit of Sonic through SA2:Battle, and then Sonic Heroes was a bit of a let down. From there things only got worse, with the exception of Sonic Generations.

Sonic's like an ex-girlfriend that ceased to be loyal. It broke my heart to break up with Sonic, but it clearly wasn't meant to be. I am no longer a fan of Sonic products, but I will always love him as a character. (Or at least the idealized version that I want him to be.)

It's happening...

I wonder what the story is gonna be. Are they gonna, like, make a movie out of a SA game?
Since they wanna make a "live action - animation hybrid movie", and since there are humans in those games...

Couldn't care less. I'm still waiting for another Sonic RPG. Getting the main four Sonic Genesis games released in an HD collection would be awesome too.

There's been a Sega Genesis compilation every gen but this might be the one that Sega skips and I wouldn't blame them. I too am tired of seeing that.

But the Sonic Genesis games never have been in HD. A couple years ago when HD compilations were all the rage I'm surprised there wasn't a Sonic Genesis one too.

Also I'm waiting for the day Sonic and Mario are put together in something besides an Olympic game. An RPG made by Intelligent Systems, with Sonic and Mario characters, would almost certainly become a hit.

This is sad because it should be fully animated, based on the original StH comic books from Archie. Those are at least actually good to read and have some sort of (excellent) story behind them. Sonic BOOM is a horrible incarnation of Sonic in all forms (video game, animated series AND comic book), and I hope they don't release it based on that.

On a side note: My 10 year old nephew LOVES Sonic, and I loved him back in the Genesis days when I was his age. But seeing all Sonic has been through since his birth, and seeing my nephew love and beat every garbage game they churn out for him makes me very sad.
