This happens when you have LEGITIMATE DLC installed and enter eShop. Themes are a great example. Say you donwloaded that free Sonic BOOM theme, but then installed the theme pack CIA. Entering the eShop will remove all themes BUT the Sonic BOOM theme. This also happened to me with the Smash DLC on my official cart similar to OP's friend. In the end I ended up purchasing the DLC through eShop in Classic Mode and haven't fooled with the DLC CIA files.

My themes always get removed when entering eShop too, so I've moved to only purchasing the ones I really like. I am bummed however because I really like the Famicon theme, and it's not available for purchase :(

Edit: I also have the DLC CIA installed for FF:Theatrythm and it has never been deleted.

One other thing to note is if you are using an official cart or not. If you are, you need to be in Classic Mode which means the DLC needs to be installed to SysNAND for it to be recognized.

So that's the reason why it disappears only for some people. Thanks for explaining!

I am pretty sure I know why some people have their dlc deleted and some people don't when you access the eshop. I just never had the time to test it out.

The thing is, I THINK, that DLC downloaded elsewhere and installed on your 3ds without you having a ticket for it, will not disappear

However, as soon as you get a ticket for any given game (smash for example), it will get deleted everytime

You get a ticket by merely visiting the I game dlc shop. You don't have to get anything. Once your system sees your ticket, even if it's empty, it will see that there is another dlc installed with the same title ID.

The only difference between the 2 tickets is that they have 2 different console IDs.

Once you get a ticket for whatever game, it stores in the ticket.db. you can't delete it except with a format, or injecting an older backup of ticket.db that didn't have the ticket at the time

Just to be safe, whenever I have to access the eShop, or whenever any of my installed DLC fails to show up, I go into System Settings and delete all of it, then I reinstall it with BBM.

Does anyone know which game might be the easiest/fastest to check to see if the DLC is still showing up? Right now I am booting up Mario Golf World Tour to see that the four DLC characters are still available, but it takes about a minute or so.

Themes are the quickest way, right from Home Menu. If a US Console, the title ID in BBM is 0008F CTR-M-HMME-00. If you enter eShop, your theme will change to the default grey background unless you had a legitimate theme currently set, or a legitimate theme was in the slideshow favorites.

When I was playing Hyrule Warriors Legends I went into the downloadable content section and hit receive presents just one see what it would do and when I realized it was making me sign in to my NIND I exited the game and checked my Smash CIA. DLC gone, so I had to reinstall. (I own a legit copy as well)

I think the person had it right by saying we lose DLC whenever we connect to our NIND. It sucks because I like going into the eshop sometimes. Is there a way to remove my NIND or do I need that to access the eshop?
Huh, I must be very lucky then. My Smash CIA DLC only gets removed when I access the eShop, not when I login to NNID on something else.
I don't think you need a NNID to access the eShop, but you cannot remove a NNID without formatting.

I had a situation similar to this, bought legit DLC for my legit Smash CIA, but installing CIA DLC was not showing up, FBI seems to not work for DLC, so I had to switch to BBM, and that surprisingly works well, and yes, accessing Eshop deletes my DLC from smash except those that I actually own.

I have a custom theme set up and that's never been deleted, although I used CHMM2 to install my theme, so that might have to do with it not being removed.

THIS ONE KILLS ME EVERYTIME LOL. Like friends even ask to play your handheld lmao.
You'd be surprised. I have a couple of friends that're curious about my softmodded 3DS. I let them mess with it, but I watch over their shoulders like a creeper. I'm not too worried, though, they're not stupid. Anything beyond just booting up a game/emulator or the odd homebrew program they tend to avoid.

They'd have to disable the filtering I have set up on my router first, which is passcode protected. I have a couple of precautions in place, so no worries. :grog:
Also, they'd know better than expecting to play a crappy Pokemon game on any of my systems. :P

Just to be clear. If I were to repair a CIA through the eShop, will my Pokemon theme obtained with a download code through the Theme Shop still be intact?

This is on emuNAND. I have NNID setup and have purchased a bunch of stuff. emuNAND is not linked to sysNAND.

And by "disappear" you mean your CIA themes/DLC pretty much just is removed/uninstalled?
