Are there any alternatives to SafeSysUpdater and sysUpdater? I keep getting a black screen on my 2nd unit and I've been here for like 20 mins trying :/

Can you set up menuhax and then use it to boot directly into sysupdater?
They are searching for an alt TO SysUpdater. NOT an alt to get into it. And as far as I'm aware, you can use BBM, FBI, and the such. BUT, it poses (what, a;) 99% chance of brick? Not worth

For downgrades you have the 2 or 3 sysupdater variants (including safesysupdater), and the very unstable mch2 port of FBI. BBM and the rest won't work for downgrades as they do not exist in .3dsx form and even if they did they would not support mch2, which is required for downgrades.

But I've been reading online that you can't use sysUpdater (OR SafesysUpdater) to downgrade N3DSXL. If I have a NAND backup of my N3DS XL(Hard mod) and try to run sysUpdater, I'm for sure able to flash the nand.bin back into the unit incase sysUpdater breaks my N3DS XL right? Just wondering :)

As I said above those are really your only options. I would strongly suggest you NOT use the mch2 port of FBI as it is VERY unstable and has none of the safety checks that even the basic sysupdater has.

I would also strongly suggest you stick to safesysupdater. The mch2 and installation parts of both sysupdater and safesysupdater are identical so neither is more likely to launch/install titles than the other, but safesysupdater has several additional checks and safeguards to help prevent bricks making it much more likely to result in a successful downgrade than sysupdater.

As for getting a blackscreen, the only thing I can tell you is to make sure the update nag is gone if it exists, and keep trying. mch2 is what is known as a "race attack", meaning that it is basically racing the arm11 processer to alter a chuck of memory before it is read. Race attacks are very unstable in regards to execution rate and rely largely on luck. So it might take a multitude of attempts before it successfully exploits, but once it does you are good to go.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Safesysupdater (and the other mch2 ports of sysupdater) will downgrade a N3DSXL just fine as long as mch2 executes properly. The only real problem is that mch2 is less stable on the N3DS (likely because of the faster cpu) and thus takes more attempts to execute. The fast majority of brick reports on the N3DS are the direct result of people using the wrong (i.e. O3DS) downgrade packs, or downloading their packages from untrustworthy sources. Safesysupdater SHOULD prevent you from installing an O3DS package now though.

Push come to shove though, if you have a hard mod you can always just dump your nand beforehand and restore it after if something goes wrong.

This is crossposted from reddit.

This is a summary / compilation of the information from this thread. Please don't follow any random instructions you find on that thread, there is quite a lot of misinformation going around. This is very much untested and a hardmod is necessary.

Do not ask if you can achieve this without a hardmod, you can't.

This is an apparently working implementation of the "FIRM partitions known-plaintext" exploit detailed here. Reports of successful downgrades are sparse or unconfirmed, but seeing as anyone who tries this has a hardmod and a NAND backup (hopefully multiple backups kept in multiple locations), there isn't really much that can go wrong.

This should work on both a New and Old 3DS.

Keep in mind throughout this that 10.4 and 10.5 use the same NATIVE_FIRM. Also keep in mind that 10.3 does not have a unique NATIVE_FIRM, and we will be using the 10.2 NATIVE_FIRM.

~

What you need:

Instructions

1. Extract the autofirm pack to a folder of your choice
2. Place a copy of your NAND file (named "nand.bin") in the autofirm folder
3. Download the appropriate decrypted 10.4/10.5 NATIVE_FIRM and the decrypted 10.2 NATIVE_FIRM as CIA files
4. Rename the 10.4/10.5 NATIVE_FIRM file to "firmoriginal.cia" then put it in the autofirm folder
5. Rename the 10.2 NATIVE_FIRM file to "firmnuevo.cia" then put it in the autofirm folder
6. Place the msvcr120d.dll file in the autofirm folder
7. Run "start.bat"
8. If everything worked, then you will have a modified "nand.bin" containing 10.2 NATIVE_FIRM on 10.4/10.5
9. Flash this "nand.bin"
10. Get access to the homebrew channel (Starter kit here) (Mirror)
11. Downgrade to 9.2 (Mirror)

~

Please reply with your bugs/issues or with confirmation of a successful downgrade

Thanks to @swarzesherz and @ceapr for their 3DSFat16tool, /u/StillUsesWindowsXP for his homebrew guide, @Raugo for his autofirm tool, and to the #3dshacks@rizon IRC channel for the 9.2 downgrade guide.

The hardmod itself is pretty much unpatchable (unless they can implement some sort of password protection when writing the data back but that's probably impossible)
This downgrade trick is very easy to be patched though.

If you can't install the hardware mod right now, then stop updating the 3DS until you can do it.

The downgrade trick will surely be "patched", I think every time there's a NATIVE FIRM with a new "minor" or "major" version, they update system titles to require the new FIRM. We're just lucky that the 10.4 FIRM is a "revision" from the 10.2 and 9.6 ones :P

Anyone that leaves a permanent hardmod, leaves a clean install.

If it's an o3ds xl I use one of the corners where you can put the little strap.

If it's any other model I either make it flush under the back cover or install it on the side flush. Either way, clean install.

Most modders like myself also give you options as to where you want the mod installed as well. Here are a few example of my work.

those look amazing. how much do you charge? I'm going to hardmod my 2ds on my own, because its worth little and very simple to disassemble. but i dont want to risk my pokemon n3ds when it arrives.
