Possibly put the iron on the board too long? especially if your learning, and you needed to fix something, prolly the problem. next time try checking hardware stores, or online for wire.

I know I should be parked up to the PC and read each and every post in this thread but I suppose it can't hurt to ask. I'm currently practicing not for a Wii chip but for a PS2 chip on my old broken CD drive from my old PC. But the chip I'm thinking of choosing has a tone of those copper points and when I tried to get solder to stick to the copper point, it either:

Doesn't stick

or

Sticks but when I pull the iron up, it pulls the solder up as well

I'm using a 15 watt iron with a solder which has flux core

Does that mean I still need more flux?

Try scraping the point lightly with an exacto blade and if that doesnt work, take a tiny bit of flux paste and apply it to the point using a toothpick or something similar.

So i still need more flux even though the solder has a flux core? Darn, I wonder why my local electrical store doesn't sell flux paste?

For those experienced soldering folks out there: http://www.ps2-scene.org/m37r01d/Wiikey%20review.html

Have at look at that wiikey install and please give your opinion on it. I'm prolly going to do it this way. It looks like "quick solder' but it is really just VERY short wire connecting the points. I can do longer wires as shown earlier in this thread, if want....whichever way seems easier to those more experienced.

It's clever, but you'll probably find it easier to just do regular wire install.

Yeah it does lookt a bit more involved but is a bit cleaner than the wire method and the "quick solder" method. Using longer wires is easier though. Where have you folks been mounting your Wii (cyclo and wiikey) mod chips? To the underside of the optical (dvd) drive?

My thanks go out to shtonkalot and the other contributors of this thread. You have cleared up much of the mystery and concerns I had about my future install.

When it comes to soldering, this link: http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/solder.htm uses too many technical terms and isn't very newbie friendly. What's a joint? And regarding flux - that link says it's in the solder itself but on the Radio Shack site they have a little tub of flux. How the heck do you apply the tub stuff?

@harsky, you are doing it wrong if it pulls up the solder. to solder, you heat the pad not touch the solder to the iron. sorry if i misunderstood, if i did, lave the iron on longer.

A "Joint" is a connection you're making with solder. So you're making a joint (as in, two things are joined) when you solder a wire to a pad.

Use a toothpick to apply flux. You wouldn't want a tube of really liquid flux for this kind of job anyway, it would get all over the place and royally screw up your job. But yeah, most solder already has flux in it, and you really shouldn't need flux for this job if you're using 60/40 rosin core solder.

Juist wondering but is a flux pen better than a flux paste? It seems as if no store supplies flux paste for soldering. Just the ones used for plumbing. Unless that can be used as well...

Question about soldering. I read that you're supposed to apply solder to the wire you're about to solder to a point on the wii, and you're supposed to apply solder to the point on the wii. My question is, couldn't the solder on the point and on the wire solidify before you stick the tinned wire onto the point on the wii?

For installing the Chiip, can I use the 30 gauge wire for everything? Including the programmer? Or do I need another kind of wire too?

When building the programmer, the end of the resistor that goes into the connector that connects to pin, has to be soldered right? How do I go about soldering that connection? How do you solder wires and resistors together?

How do you solder wires/resistors/led/capacitor to a chip? Is it the same as soldering wires to a point on the wii's dvd drive?

Also, can you open the Wii without a tri-wing screwdriver? Maybe with a really small flathead screwdriver? Someone said something about that stripping the screws. What does that mean?

Also, kind of a dumb question, but why do things have to be soldered at all? Couldn't the wire just touch the point on the board, and work? Or is the outside of a soldered joint insulated by the outside of the solder?

UPDATE: It's alright. TheVirus already answered all my questions. Thx a lot.

ok, so does anyone have a guide to how to put the damn thing back together? Like which screws go where? There are short silver, long silver, fat silver, long black, and short black. Easy to take apart, pain in the ass to put back together

I'm about to go to my local electronics store to get supplies, but I have a question before I start practicing. This is what I understand from soldering a modchip with wires: After tinning the iron, I have to touch the iron directly on the wire, then add solder. After that I assume I solder the end of the wire again on one of the points on the Wii?

I totally agree. The first time I modded a Wii I didn't really pay that much attention when taking it apart and when I put it back together I regretted it, lol.

Hey, anyone have that Wii disassembly video mirrored? The ESA just had it yanked. It was up there yesterday... I used it to take apart my Wii. Now I have the chip installed, but when I went to reference to video for re-assembly it was gone
laugh.gif

Anyway, I think I can get it back together fine, but it would be helpful to have the video.

Find thecheekymonkey guide and just make sure you put the right screws in the right place and tuck the one drive cable back in the little spot it was in when you opened the system.

The rest of it should be pretty self explanatory.
