so I've ordere
So, if I find a resistor and solder it to the backlit cable, theoretically I should get the same result as a frontlit one, right?

(btw that's a wonderful collection)

I've ended up with some spare backlight cables after the ags101 screens dried up so will order a Frontlight cable and attempt to mod the other with a resistor in line...

keep you posted :+)

Ok, I see it now. You want to solder it to pad # 2 in your picture for C56.
thanks very much
just doing it now and I soldered it initially in the wrong place (I think for ags101)

Hi, Chomel here from France.
I want to light my GBA AGB. Backlight has become really expensive. So I've been looking for a way to frontlight my GBA. I found two.
- YOURS using the complete screen, frontlight... of a AGS-001 with that cable.
- the other one when you only take the frontlight system and solder it directly (with a resitor) to the motherboard (like Patguy785 did or tried to do in his threads)

Have someone ever done the two mods? Can someone send pictures to compare.

I have a broken AGS-001 and I want to use it to frontlight my AGB. Buying the cable to use the AGS-001 screen is a bit expensive (price + fees from China or the US to France + the fees to pay in $). I wonder if it's worth it. Or if the other frontlight mod in "enough".

Hi, I wanted to show you guys the pics of a LCD screen I got, in the store they couldnt tell me is it was a AGS 001 or 101, but I can see it's a 001 because it's not completly black, but I cant tell if its an original one, and I wanted to buy leechan's cable on ebay for the frontlight but it says 'for original nintendo LCD screen', do you think it will work with this screen? I cant tell if it a thrd party screen, Also how did you guys made it fits the GBA housing with the Frontlight on?

It is the right screen as I can see the bottom silver light bar. There's really no way to tell if it's aftermarket or OEM, but I'm sure the outcome will still turn out pretty good. You need to get the AGS001 ribbon cable to make it work on the GBA motherboard. The light will come on after you installed and soldered it to the recommended point. Re-read the first post or the whole front page.

Hi! the cable from leechan just arrived, I wanted to know if you let the frontlight on, I heard it didnt fit inside the GBA with it so well, did you leave it? also my screen has two cables, red and black (as seen in the previous pics) which are the voltage source of the frontlight, I saw that those were soldered to the Voltage source of the GBA that is where the batteries go.

Greetings!

I did the mod, leechan send me a pdf manual, but the LCD doesnt turn on, I hear the Gameboy sound, indicating that is on. Soldered where it was supposed to go but my screen didnt turn on, so I guess it's the screen? I left the red and black cable free I didnt conect then to anything. :(

It seems I've bought this one too with these black and red wire. Anyone knows something about it ? Are they to solder or not ? kotkotenshi tried it without soldering and it doesn't work as it seems. Another hurdle to clear :( maybe it's only an internal bridge. Can only tell it if it has arrived. Will respond then.
these are the pictures the seller made for me. It's a AGS-001 screen.

Hi, yes that's exactly like the one I got, so the cable from leechan didnt turn on my lcd, so I decided to make the other tutorial where you take the front glass and place it over the original GBA lcd. It was quite easy, I just had to tear said glass from the lcd, it only had a few drops of glue in the inferior corner from where the red and black cables come, then I soldered some longer cables to the red and black ones, really thin ones, to the energy source of the GBA. if you are interesed in doing this tutorial I could post the video, but since its a different tutorial I'm not sure if I can post it in this thread. Here some pics of how my gba came out:

thx for your reply :) what i don't understand is, why did you pull off the glass ? you can easily extend the existing cables without doing put off glass.

EDIT: i just see, you have trapezial malformation on the screen. is it right ? hmm...i have another question. why are there 2 different versions of the screen ? i mean, if i had a SP and the original one has no red and black wire to solder on the board, i wouldn't be very happy to do this.

I didnt pull off the glass to reach the cables, I pull it off cause it is what I used to illuminate my gba lcd screen. I used the glass (it comes right in the front part of the lcd screen you have) to place it in front of the original gba lcd screen and I solded the red and black cables to energize it and the glass itself gives the light(ithas a led) when to give voltage to it.

I did what´s in this video

it's in spanish but you can understand whats going on

Mine didn't don't that. Make sure you didn't have the adapter cable backward. Try flipping it around and turn it on again. And make sure the cable are in all the way.

I don't see those two extra wires like his. Only the red wire that needs to be soldered to the motherbaord. That's about it. Report back.

You shouldve waited and/or get a replacement of the cable because when you do get it to work, it works flawlessly. Definitely no glare. I have one like that one with a dimmer chip and one with the whole SP screen and light assembly inside the GBA shown in the second page.

Good work BTW.

It just looks 10x better. No glare at all, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

It's not at all. Pretty straight forward. Just make sure you have the customed adapter ribbon cable plugged in correctly. There's mistake of people installing it backward and blaming the cable that it doesn't work.

If I can do it, you can too. Let us know how it goes.

Ohhh I see, i'll try that plugging the cable the other way then, thanks. Also, did your game boy shell closed completly? you didnt use the crystal led I mentioned? I supposed you didnt cause you said you didnt used those red and black wires, or that you didnt see them? those come with the ags001 lcd screen and If i remove it it'll probably fit better, but then how does the ags001 screen get's light???

in this pic you posted I cant see any glass, is this how you used the lcd? wothout the glass?

When you say you used the whole SP screen and light assembly how did you manage to close the gba shell?

I use everything that came with SP screen including the front light. Everything.

Yes, I use the screen w/o the SP glass. I was just testing the SP screen in that picture to see if the screen will work in the GBA motherboard.

When you say you used the whole SP screen and light assembly how did you manage to close the gba shell?

It closes. It's a tight fit but it will closes. You have to grind down the front shell like you do for the back lit AGS101 screen. If you look up the tutorial on youtube for the GBA back lit mod, they tell you to grind down the front shell casing so that it'll fit the screen better. Thats how I did with the AGS001 front screen and front light. Same thing as you would when modding a AGS101 back lit into a GBA.

Here's a picture I just took of mine:

GBA_SPFrontLit_zpsm8naa3bf.jpg

As you can see, I have the GBASP AGS001 LCD screen and the front light all together stuffed into my original GBA console. It'll fit if you grind down the ridges on the inside of the front shell casing to make more room.
