its going to be difficult to make a decent hack with no entrance or exit editing or zone editing, also not to be a party pooper but imho declaring your making a fully fledged rom hack should really wait until you have a good chunk of it done you see too many "IM MAKING A NSMB2 HACKK!!!!" threads that never amount to more than a video or a handful of levels before they loose interest......why not all the people wanting to make a hack team up, focus on 1 world each and make a nsmb GBAT (gbatemp) edition, it would be more likely to get finished :P

I've never seen anyone saying they are making a NSMB2 level hack, besides me and that one guy from almost a year ago who disappeared from the internet.

its not just NSMB2, but original NSMB/wii hacks........in fact hacks in general almost always get abandoned halfway through.....sad but true

PS i also made a few NSMB2 levels, but found the zone/exit limitations to be a bit of a hindrance to making fun/different levels as your basically forced to conform to the same basic layout as an existing level

Well I'm not going to forget about this one! I've almost never given up on a project and I won't start now!
well good luck with it, would be nice to see how you get around the zone stuff, as for me it just made every level feel very "flat" hopefully you can figure out fun ways around it or maybe someone will fix that issue

Yeah the zone stuff is a big pain in the ass. I can get past most entrances by using the special exit controller.

idk, it's a pretty good power up to have around.
Perhaps the Propeller from New Super Mario Bros. Wii? Or do you want to create something entirely new?

I'd want something with similar mechanics to the raccoon suit. Something that could be made just by switching models and sounds.

What's the point in that case? If it's going to be the same, there's hardly a reason to do it at all. If anything, you could perhaps do the Tanooki Suit, but without transforming into a statue that isn't noticed by enemies, that one isn't that good an idea either.

The flying suit from SMG2 is the exact same as the wing cap from SM64. People seemed to like that. Not to mention how the yellow and red baby yoshis are blatant ripoffs of the blimp fruit and glow fruit powerups from the Mario Galaxy series. Or how about the fact that the acorn suit is just the propeller suit with gliding?

The difference here is that the Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy engines make the gameplay different, therefore even if the idea is the same, the execution isn't. What you are trying to do here is a model swap, something that will not change how the power up behaves, therefore it'll be 1:1 the same, just looking different. As for the acorn suit, it's the same thing: just the propeller suit with gliding. Key word is gliding, an added function. Which is why the closest thing I could recommend to you is the Tanooki Suit, which behaves the exact same as the Racoon Suit (since they are in the same game, Super Mario Bros. 3, therefore the physics are also the same), but with an added feature: turning into a statue that enemies ignore.

Okay fine. Would you care to explain to me how to make your own powerups? You seem to know a lot about it. sarcasm is funny

I'm not saying that I can. I'm saying that if you want to just model swap it, but have it play exactly the same, it's kind of not worth to bother with it. If you really want to change it, the closest you can get is the Tanooki suit, which, in Super Mario Bros. 3 (the origin of the Raccoon suit as well) played exactly the same, just with an added function. Unless you change how the Raccoon suit works in NSMB2 drastically, the only obvious choice that'll make it not pointless is the Tanooki suit.

However, since you can only (or want to) change the model and the sounds for a powerup, you seem to know exactly the same amount about creating a new power up as me, so... ;)

Its not that I don't want to make an original powerup, believe me I do, its just that its impossible to do at the moment, since there is no way of modifying the games code. If there was though, I would add the penguin suit/ice flower in a heartbeat!

Which is why I'm saying that there's not much point if it's only a model/sound swap. You could leave it be until it is possible to hack in new, creative ones instead of just swapping it out. With how limited NSMB2 hacking currently is, I think focusing on creating a hack that replaces all the levels with similar themed, but entirely new ones would be probably better? Not trying to stop you from doing what you want (nor do I mean any harm with my counter-arguments), just trying to help out with ideas!

I made a purple mushroom. Here is the best part: It functions EXACTLY like the normal mushroom in every way. If I figure out how to make custom enemies/items, should I bring back the poison mushroom from Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels? Probably a bad idea.
