Not sure if anybody has a better way of doing it, but with mine I entered in a junk DNS address in the settings before connecting, so it would save the connection profile but fail the connection to the Nintendo servers. Just make sure to change the DNS settings back before trying the web browser or anything else. I was also worried about pressing the wrong button when connecting, so this was a quick way I found to do it. Best of luck :).

I'll just enter the tube hax or google dns I guess then. So what happens if you click yes to the update It just says failed to connect?

I would recommend using 127.0.0.1 if your going to give a bogus DNS server address. 127.0.0.1 is used for another purpose, so using it as a DNS server will prevent any connection.

Alternatively an easier way to do this is just unplug the internet cord from the back of the router, your 3DS will still connect to the router (and save the connection) but obviously wont connect to the internet.

EDIT: Just to clarify, you should not even get to the popup about an update, it should show a red X over the internet globe, and on the bottom screen say something like エラー and then some numbers.

If you already got the update pop up before you changed the dns, make sure you clear it. Hold L+R+up+A at boot and press cancel (やめる).

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
