ROM Hack Is it plausible to "un-localize" names and undub voices in Yokai Watch once it releases?

First off, the English names for the main characters are lame and make no sense considering you live in a pseudo-Japan. The majority of the monster's names are so awful they aggravate me. Just look at the US commercial...
Secondly, the game would need to be undubbed. I'm not sure how much voicework there actually is though.

You may call me a baby or whatever. But this is important to me and it will be the deciding factor for to me to even get the game.

Now, I know nothing of what it takes to rom hack so it's not like I can actually do anything.
I'm just gauging interest for like-minded individuals I suppose.
So what do you guys think?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum! I'm pretty sure I'm fine though.

I'm sure it would be possible to do a simple name change hack with HANS once the game gets released.

It's common for localized games to have the same filenames/sound formats so an undub would probably be as easy as locating the sound folder in one version and overwriting it in the other.

And you can probably hex edit the names into whatever the Japanese names are romanized... Assuming they fit. You might have to improvise a little there but surely you can make it to your liking. I think the real problem would be getting a romfs dump of both versions if you'll only own one of them. Might take some digging.

Thanks guys. That's all reassuring.
But like I said, I don't know a dang thing when it comes to this stuff... :(

I'd have to ask around for someone to do it and I don't think anyone would really want to help out.
It's probably hard to find someone with the same opinion as me WHO ALSO knows how to do any of this stuff.
But I certainly won't stop anyone from trying, that's for damn sure!

At least we're still getting the game. Plus, name changes during localization is normal. Just look at Pokemon, for instance.
But, if someone does make a rom hack undubbing and renaming the names and terminology for Yokai Watch, that'd be pretty amazing.

Yeah I agree.
But I actually like most of the Pokemon names.
These names don't have the same quality IMO.
Maybe it's nostalgia, who knows? But whatever.

Something like this interests me, I ended up checking out some of the Anime in Japanese since I heard it was all a hit over there so I was curious and even though its only been like 8 episodes I much prefer the romanized names but those of us who do are bound to be a niche audience.

I would love to see an Undub of this, honestly seeing the odd video I think the localization bugs me just enough that it would annoy me through the whole game :( game doesn't hit till 5th Dec in NZ so I got awhile to wait still, would be great if an Undub was out by then but if it isn't I would almost be tempted to take a crack at it myself, which could be a short lived process since I've never tried to modify a 3DS games.

Then the problem with Undubs is its normally different between NA/EU? which makes it more of a pain to sort out! Hell I'm curious about the SMT IV Undub, I played like an hour of that game and wanted the Japanese voices so haven't really picked it up yet, was hoping a HANS Undub would hit but not seen it yet, and I don't know how hard it would be to take the US one and get it going on the EU version with HANS.

Long Story Short... I want to see this!

I'm glad to see there are some people who'd like to see this as well.
We'd need to find someone who's willing to look into it.

Seeing as GBATemp is like, THE place to ask for this stuff (afaik), I feel there's little point in asking on another site.
As long as we keep this bumped someone will (hopefully...) come around and at least look into it.

Hey, look at what happened with the Rune Factory 4 undub. I made that topic and kept it bumped for over 6 months and Scrangos actually figured it out and released one!
Kids, the moral of the story is, don't stop whining until you get what you want! Just look at me! :P

Getting the Audio across doesn't seem like it would be much of an issue really comes down to the text, I thought it would be nice to look into the Demo files but got to wait for it to hit the NZ store (if that happens) so I can dump it and toy with it.

Will be out in NA before I even get access to the demo though >.<

Now that it is out in the US I had a quick look at the files and at the very least based on a few Youkai the sound files seem to match up so it should be a matter swapping the US Sound Folder for the JPN Sound Folder, as for the names it looks like you could HEX Edit the "yw1_a.fa" file to change them but so many instances of the same names and bound to be some issues when it comes to the length being different from the the localized version vs a romanized version.

Looks like the US version of the game already supports other languages? so at the very least if a patch was made for that file it should work on US/EU versions, just a guess... Maybe all US games have language options? always assumed they didn't which is why it sometimes takes longer for games to hit outside of the US since companies want other options for the EU.

Big Question is... Does the game even work with HANS!?

I'd love to see this come to fruition.

I've always enjoyed Mythology and Folklore. Watching Spirited Away (2001) is my earliest memory of being exposed to Yokai and Japanese Folklore in particular.

As someone who has, for almost 15 years, always referred to Yokai by their romanised Japanese names, the localised names come off as "silly" and make me cringe a little.

I was hyped when I heard Yokai Watch was being released in the west, but that hype has faded considerably as more was revealed about the localisation.

My decision to buy the game will depend entirely on whether I can undo much of the localisation through hacks.

the japanese names are very silly too! so i'm not surprised the english names are silly.
do people really think the japanese names in this game would be 'serious', it is a children's game after all.
although i do prefer original content/undubs etc, surely one would rather understand the english name, than not understand the japanese one...?
because if you want the original feeling, how can you get that if you don't understand the name?
(i finished the game last year, good fun)

I would like this also. Unfortunately if it's not an RPG the there is no interest. Just wish a lot of games get undub treatment.
