Transcend 2gig 80X miniSD (Taiwan) TS2GSDM80 S/N: 147800-1260 formatted in FAT w/64k clusters
Formats to 1.90 gig and currently has 5.81 megs free (19.1megs free when using 32k clusters and all the same data)

Tested on:
BYTECC U2CR-418/HUB(42-IN-1) 42-in-1 USB 2.0 Card Reader (Newegg.com)

Random Access: 1.1ms
CPU utilization: 0%
Average read: 4.9 MB/s
Burst Speed: 4.9 MB/s
Purchased from Newegg.com

Same card, but with a standard FAT format (default clusters, which I believe is 32k in WinXP):

Exact same results.

Hmm....this is quite a slow card for an 80X. Bummer. Must be that Taiwan thing.....

EDIT: TEST INVALID

My test is invalid, but not the fault of HDTach. I tested multiple cards (CF/SD/miniSD)....they all read the same thing except for "Random Access" times. I have determined that the card reader I am using (BYTECC U2CR-418/HUB(42-IN-1) 42-in-1 USB 2.0 Card Reader (Newegg.com)) limits the read speed.

Why's my read speed half of what others manage to get?

/edit: Cardreader is slow and test results are unreliable. I retested with a PNY reader and got actual speeds, see some posts below.

It seems that a quality reader is needed. Just because it says USB 2.0 doesn't mean it'll be fast. I noticed a trend even for myself that my reader seems to be limiting me no matter what card I put in it. Mine is a Belkin USB 2.0 multi reader which I though was pretty good. I also tried in a 3.5" multidrive and seem to get the same speeds. After all this, it seems that the data here is circumstantial at best. Take what you will from this list. It should at least give you a sense of what other people are getting with various cards. I suppose the best info is in the little notes that each individual left.

It would actually be great if someone created a homebrew app that would measure the flash memory's speed. That way, it could run on any cart, supposing it use DLDI, and give uniform measurements. After all, it IS the cart's performance that matters in the end.

Hard to read.. Also, my PNY is perfect in PoR.. Don't take one experience as fact.

Just bought a Dane-Elec card at Dixons here in the Netherlands. It certainly looks like they sell Micro-SD from the same batches the Japan Kingston cards came from: the serial number at least shows a very similar coding to the Japan Kingston cards in this topic.

My serial:
0649u11268u
CO1G Japan

My R4 and cardreader haven't arrived yet, but expect a test report by the end of this week.

Price with € 17,99 is a little steep to the cards sold on http://www.ervavli.nl/ . But Dane-Elec at Dixons (provided the test results are good) is the next best thing when it comes to availability of the speedy Japan micro SD cards outside of webshops.

Heh - I just tried the test with my black usb reader that came with the R4. The results were less than satisfactory. However I blame it to my pc, being a 6-year-old one with usb 1.0 ports.

Castlevania PoR works perfectly though, making me stand with the conclusion that the Dane-Elec card of my previous post is comparable if not the same as Kingston.

The shipped reader sucks for doing accurate tests anyway, I get half the speed of my other reader, while both are USB2.0.

POR froze previously on card mentioned above. If I waited a few seconds around the portals they would work for awhile but still would freeze at any given moment.

New card is PNY 1GB Japan
Read speed 10.5 MB/s
Burst is 10.6 MB/s
Random Access Time 0.7 m/s

POR works without a hitch. Intro movie seems sped up (around spiraling frame scene).

Perhaps your USB ports are actually not USB2.0

Wrong...Since I have a old CPU (GAMING PC-Motherboard died) here is the stats

OS:MS Xp Pro (Just upgraded from win2k)
Ram:256MB (Just upgraded)
Video Card: ATI Technologies Inc. 3D RAGE IIC AGP
Processor: Intel Pentium ll 399MHz
HD:C Drive:3.99GB
HD:E Drive:2.37GB(System Restore)
DVD/CD (Rw)
2USB Ports: 1.1

So I know it is the system usb ports that is slow...
