What is best HDTV?

What kind of HDTV is the best? LCD, Plasma, or DLP?

Also, what is probably the best size screen that's at a good price?

Easily, DLP with the Sony XBR series. They are freaking awesome. Pricey but awesome. I've also heard things about Westinghouse, but too sure though.

I have a DLP and I love it. I think DLP gives you the best tv for the money. I've seen some pretty cheap LCD tv's though that are around 30 inches. But really, it depends on how far you're going to be sitting from the tv. That may determine what size of tv you need, and then you can determine what kind of tv will be the best to get.

LCD is probably the best right now as long as you aren't looking for a very large TV where Plasma and DLP are better deals. The LCD picture is reliable and there is less chance for burn in than there is with Plasma TV's and the brightness of the picture has a longer life. They get kind of expensive when the picture tube gets bigger but you can get a pretty good deal for a 42 inch screen or less. For Big screens plasma is a much better deal. I don't have experience with DLP. If you want to save money you might try a CRT HDTV. I have a 30" widescreen in my basement that has a great HDTV picture and I've seen them for sale for $500 or less. If you are shopping for an LCD TV ask them about the contrast ratio. It will be something like 300:1 or 600:1. The higher the ratio the better. The ratio represents the difference between the darkest darks and the whitest whites...and therefore a better picture. On LCD's with a lower ratios the blacks don't get as deep. Price differences could be based on this.

My research has always brought me to a Samsung 42" plasma with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. It's been running from $1300 to $1600 depending on where you go.

Something to keep in mind when shopping for any tv is to go to stores and really look at them. Go to different stores if you have the time and look at the same models. Another thing to note, is last I heard, Sony was using Samsung brand plasma screens.

Weve got a Samsung 56" DLP HDTV (Model: HL-S5686W) and love it. its got a ton of connections on the back, even a VGA port

Playing BF2142 on a 56" screen

( although sucks cause no widescreen support for the game

)

Bill gates: a friend just got 47" Vizio for his room, i think from costco. got 1080P and picture quality is very good. There is no best type of tv cuz there are factors, PRICE. Theres a size chart you can google up for distance from tv you're going to view it from. say 56'' from 8ft is pretty big, maybe too big.

Jiggah: I also agree that if you got the money, sony lcd xbr series are the best. atleast they make something almost right. 100% if they had picture in picture.

I just bought a 42" Panasonic Plasma (TH42PX60U) for $1200. i've been researching it all week, and it seems to be the best deal for my money and space (i live in a small one bedroom). I've spent hours and hours on avsforum researching and it seems to be the most liked plasma (except the larger 50'+ sizes). some will argue it's not 1080p, but for me, this wasnt a huge issue. and as far as the burn-in, it's an almost non-issue with newer plasma's... and the myth of 're-gassing' your plasma is of course, false. even watching the plasma 8 hour's a day, it will take 17 years before it's brightness fails... and if i still have the same tv by then, i will be pissed!!! i want my holographic shit! jesus, it the year 2000 anyways. where's our phasers?

remember, your going to need a TV stand, an up-converting dvd player, and a tuner (if one isnt included in the TV)... also start looking into a 5.1 or 7.1 sound system.

Go for a CRT HDTV. They do exist, and the image quality is just as good as what you would get on any of the other screen types. CRT isn't dead yet !!

Also they are now very cheap.

yea, but CRT's are huge... there's no way in hell i could give up that much space for a TV... i still need room to bowl and box.

I'm a big fan of the Westinghouse lvm-37w3. It's a favorite of avsforum technophiles, and the price point is sweet at 999 for a 1080p monitor.

but is 1080p even noticible at 37"? i mean, this would be a great TV for my bedroom to replace my 26" LCD (non-HD) that i got for christmas a couple years back... but i'm not sure if i could notice 1080p at 8 ft on a 37"

I currently have a 26" samsung LCD TV. Its only does up to 720i and 1080i is upscalled. I have had no problems with the TV as sony are supposed to use the samsung screens on their TVs. So I've got a sony quality screen at samsung prices. A warning over the LCD tvs, when you close to one you can see the refresh rate on it and the picture isn't very good.

Think of this before getting a big LCD tv for the bedroom, as you will see this all the time. My 26" LCD tv looks good and works well for me in the main room as I'm sat at a distance from the screen.

i'm just now upgrading from a 26 inch tube tv. so almost any upgrade will be a major improvement for me... my 42" plasma arrives in 2 days. i'm excited to finally play Oblivion in HD.

I think so...but it's totally subjective.

I went from a 27" 4:3 to the 37"...and it makes a world of difference. I actually had to move my couch back.

I sit about 7 ft from my panel, and I think it looks incredible. Then again, I have pretty good eyesight.

i'm about 8 feet from where the 42" will be...

and the couch is about 14 ft from the screen, but screw the couch, i never leave my recliner anyways.
