I have been putting off asking this question for the fear of looking foolish, but i need to ask and will try to ask as best i can

I have N3DS happily running alongside a GW on emuNAND which has been updated to 9.5

In the past i have always just used .3ds format loaded into the GW card itself and played that way but today i wiped everything and decided to start over from fresh and used a larger card inside the N3DS, the reason being is i decided to switch over to .cia content instead of loading the roms

Now i have explained the above here is my question, the installing of the many .cia files took a very long time to do and i would try to avoid having to do this again if possible

So if i decided to make the move to CFW (no idea which one yet) so i would be able to boot directly into whichever flavour i decided upon could i keep my existing emuNAND created by GW with all the pre loaded files on it ? OR would i have to start over again and lose all those pre installed files i painstakingly added today ?

You keep everything installed on the Emunand with whatever CFW you use, you can even use a way of booting to CFW next to a way of booting to Gateway Emunand.

thank you for replying

so in basic terms, i could keep my existing emuNAND i have now in tact and simply have a CFW load it up ?

Yep! That's exactly what you can do. For example if you're using FBI to install the mset exploit, you can change the MSET ROP from Gateway to that of a CFW and back.

Or what i do is, i use MSET for loading Reinand and Cubic Ninja to load Gateway.

I have the mset from GW already installed and stuck (so doesn't leave if i use blue card)

So your saying this can be manipulated to load a CFW which i assume then has a CN .cia installed ?? which then loads GW emunand ?

Is my above statement correct ?

If so, i assume you could also coldboot to all this then ?

Pretty much the finished article and the GW flashcart itself becomes obsolete

I use GW mset when i want to use my gateway, and rxtools web exploit when I want to play gba. One emunand, everything works perfectly!

I'm not sure about the Cubic Ninja CIA, i'm using a retail Cubic Ninja, however I think i read somewhere you can install a cubic Ninja CIA to your sysnand and use that, but i'm not fully sure for that.

As for manipulating to load a CFW, you can install FBI (look for it on gbatemp) on the sysnand, with that you can change the which MSET you want to use.

EDIT: The setup stang mentions with the browser, works as well.

Just slightly confused on one thing...

So i no longer wanted to run roms (which i dont really), using one of the above mentioned methods i could still boot into the existing GW emunand without needing the flashcard itself ?

Any cia you installed with gateway will boot in rx emunand. And correct, I have full access of my gw emunand without needing my gw card when I use the web exploit to boot rxtools. If you soley want to play gba/ds/dsi/cia files you will be fine with custom firmware, the only pro of gateway is being able to use 3ds files.

Thank you, your reply is in simple terms which i understand :)

I am using a N3DS, which would be the most suitable CFW for me ? would it be the rxtools that you are using or something different ? My sysNAND is 9.2 is this compatible with the web exploit you mentioned ? and could i cold boot with a similar setup to what you have ?

Sorry for so many questions but you have me intrigued now to say the least. Getting rid of the flashcart would be great

Haha i am very out of the loop but managed to install rxtools last night in an hour or 2, I totally understand how you feel. I am not positive if rx supports new 3ds, take a look here for installing one of its alternatives. http://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-how-to-install-a-cfw-on-a-9-0-9-2-n3ds-without-cn-oot.398394/

They provide ways to get cfw running no matter what your setup is, you have gateway so at least one method will get you where you need to go. I wish I had a n3ds and could provide you with more help :/

@Stang thanks for that link, i will have to have a good read through it, at first glance a lot of it is flying straight over my head tbh

My ultimate goal would be to make my GW flashcart and CN original game obsolete so they could be sold to fund other projects, but i am concerned they may be needed again if things go wrong "to get back in" if that makes sense

My ideal solution would be a way to power on and boot with some of the new exploits directly to that already created GW emuNAND but i think that is probably unrealistic on my part

If you want to use GW mode you need the GW flashcart but you can boot into rxMode without it (and still use all the cias you installed)

Thank you @Stang and @Quantumcat

Looks like rxMode is what i am looking for, looks very daunting though if i am honest, but no pain no gain as they say in sports

I will take a look at the auto booting / cold boot options also

Thank you so much for the advice and support offered

Yea my bad I thought for some reason rx was not compatible with n3ds, glad I searched a bit more. It really isnt that bad, I felt overwhelmed also but 2 hours later after a bunch of reading, I had everything working perfectly. Good luck hope you get it sorted!
