Hey guys!

I've had the R4i card for years now. Every new update has gone smoothly whenever I change the firmware (some hiccups with some of them, fixed by rolling the date backwards a couple years) and so on... until v1.82b...

http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/downloade.asp

My DSiXL is v1.4.1U (it has never been updated, as far as I'm concerned I never connected it to the internet since I got it and I got the R4 months afterwards).

Now I'm getting the "Fake Card!" thing with the new firmware. I've tried downloading several other firmwares and even getting some old versions. Nothing works.

Can you help me out?

Ok, I downloaded it and it took me a little while to figure out what files I needed in order to not get this:

r4i-sdhc_troubleshooting_05.jpg

I downloaded the latest firmware from the official site to compare what "I need" and whats on your link.

Then, the splash kicked in but sticked on the "Loading" and never changed. I basically copied the contents of "R4i-SDHC YSMenu" and the "moonshl2" of the official firmware along with the "R4.dat" (because the dat contained on the YS folder gives me the error on the photo before).

I'm likely doing something wrong, but I admit that I'm unsure of what it is (I know little about these things).

If you use the firmware files which gave you the fake card error ,
Where is the .DAT file located (in which folder in the SD) ?

When using this firmware ;

https://gbatemp.net/threads/retrogamefan-updates-releases.267243/

Place the .DAT file in the same folder als the original firmware looks for,
Because it is harcoded into the flashcard

I unzip the original firmware and copy the contents of the folder directly into the SD.

If you enter the SD, it looks like this (sans the "Roms" folder I always create for the games themselves):

capture.png

So, browsing through the files, I figured that "R4i-SDHC YSMenu" is what I needed for my specific flash card:

captura2.png

No moonshl2 folder means I'm lacking these particular files (or so I thought). Even so, the Loading still "freezes" whether this folder is present or not.

The TTMenu.dat, even if renamed to "R4", still gives me the "? MENU" error (as if the menu doesn't exist). So, I replace it with the R4.dat contained in the original firmware and then the frozen Loading appears.

If the TTMenu is present or not, it makes no difference.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I also found no parallel files to the "moonshl2" ones the YS zip. Figures they're probably exchangeable with the ones on the original firmware.

Are you downloading the correct version of v1.82b from their download page as there are a few versions of it. I have the R4i v1.4.5 (wifi) card and it uses the same kernel as yours. The following kernel works fine for me:

http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/R4i V1.82b English.zip

Yes! That's the one I downloaded (it even saved a "(1)" file, meaning that it is the same one I already had on that folder).

Those files alone give me the "Fake Card!" warning. I came to terms that the card may be a counterfeit one, but I just remembered that this very card was bought online from the site long time ago and this error wasn't the first time it got me (but either rolling back the clock a few years always did the trick or a skilled friend on these things often stayed with the card and somehow made it work... but... let's just say that I can't get his help anymore...).

This DSXL was a gift for a special someone and now this card is preventing me to give it.

I really want to make it work. :shy:

Have you checked to see if your card passes the fake check on their website. There should be a number on the back of the card:
http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/searchen.asp

I'll post a version of YSMenu for you that will boot as the primary kernel when I get a minute.

Post a picture of the back of the card so users can compare to their own?

Ok! I just took a picture of it... double checking with the website right now: it is apparently counterfeit (but I was told it was bought from the official site back then). It lacks the back numbers.

The top is scratched, it was placed on a wrongly by my nephew and I had to force it out.

Maybe it won't pass the check. ^_^

Thanks for your help. I struggled last night using different files and contained that Mikenuun shared, but I didn't got any results. I just don't understand much about these things. :shy:

Looks like the sticker with the code on it was removed.

Try this package:
R4i-SDHC YSMenu (autoboot)

Firstly, backup anything you need from your Micro SD card (games etc.).

Download the SD Formatter tool to prepare your Micro SD card:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
Set the Format option to Full (Overwrite), and Format Size Adjustment to On.

Now unzip the YSMenu package. Put the files/folders in the root directory of your Micro SD card. Now test it boots directly to YSMenu. If everything is ok, put your games back on the card.

It worked! Now I can get a game going now. I'll copy a few of them to try it out before handing my gift.

This is amazing, Gyron. Thanks so much! :yaynds:

I hope that the firmware holds up for a while.

Glad it worked. YSMenu doesn't have an expiry, so it will run indefinitely. RetroGameFan occasionally updates it via his thread:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/retrogamefan-updates-releases.267243/

I used the 'dats' from his latest release (v7.03 6536) in the package I posted.

Don't forget, some games (eg. GTA Chinatown Wars) have 'AP' (Anti-Piracy) protection. So always check the 'Cheat Menu' in YSMenu, and make sure 'AP Fix' is ticked if the option is there. You do this by highlighting the game you want to play, and click the 'Cheat' button with your stylus (or press 'Y') to open the 'Cheat Menu'. If you see the menu item 'AP Fix', highlight it and press 'A' to put a small tick in the box. Press 'Start' to save and exit. Now with your stylus, put a tick in the empty box next to the word 'Cheat'. You can now press 'A' to start the game, and the Anti-Piracy measures will be bypassed.

If you can't get to grips with YSMenu for whatever reason, here are some older kernels for your card to try. Just set the system date of your DSi-XL back a few years:

Perfect. I will most likely download these have them as backup just in case something "funny" happens with the firmware in the future.

At this rate, there's something that bugs me... is my R4 a counterfeit one? The sticker on the back was lost (but it was there, a silver one with a number), but the outline of it is just like the one that's supposed to be legal.

I'm left in doubt.

Other than this, the flashcard works like a charm. I'm eternally in debt with you. :D

Mine had the silver sticker too, and the code was underneath. Yours looks like it has either worn away or been wiped off. Your card looks like a "genuine" r4i-sdhc. If it isn't, it looks like someone went to a lot of trouble to basically make a clone of a clone, as the r4i-sdhc card is a DSTT clone. Maybe try one of those earlier kernels on another Micro SD just to confirm it is genuine.

I went here to double-check the fake card thing. The number may have worm off after a while, so I'm unsure (because I never actually payed attention to this detail). But my proof (so to speak) to it being original was that the firmware never went bad on me.

Hell, I downloaded every time from the original site and it always worked. Now and then it had some hiccups and I had to roll back the date. When that did't work anymore: a friend who was skilled on this file/computer stuff always worked out some way to make it work again.

Judging by the sticker leftover line: probably it is original. But this "hiccup" with the firmware worried me because I don't have my friend anymore to help me out. Mikenuun gave me an option and I played around with it, but in the end this world of the flashcards is still too obscure for me.

Thank God you guys helped me. I've been playing Contra 4 all the way ever since. :)
