Not sure if it's still rumor or fact but i've been told they will rerelease the Wii with a DVD Movie playing drive, and in various colors with a price drop of 50$ in June/July. Anyone have input on this fact/fiction or have any links with an exact statement? I'd like to know if it's true so I can decide when to purchase my Wii.

I know that there are indeed new colors, but I think the DVD player will be an addon, for 50$

So the colors are a yes but no info on the release date as in this year/next year or if it's even confirmed the dvd player is an add on?

Pretty sure the DVD option is not an add-on but a feature that will be integrated into newer manufactured Wii models. However, an add-on feature would be nice for those that bought the Wii early, so they don't feel left out. As for the colors, marketing analysts are predicting that they will show up some time in spring or early summer.

Why can't they just add DVD software to the WiiShop? I mean, Wii has ALL the necessary hardware for DVD playback.

I agree, if Nintendo really asks you to buy a new Wii if you want DVD playback it's simply a rip-off. The Wii has a nice DVD drive, etc.. The only thing I can see happening is that you would have to pay for the FW update (as the big N might have to buy licenses). Personally I'll wait for Wii linux

Nintendo would have to pay a licence for every Wii sold, regardless of whether that Wii's owner will (eventually) buy the DVD playing software. That's how it goes. So it's (financially) safer for Nintendo to have a special DVD-playing edition of Wii.

I don't know what they will do, though. I hope they make an upgrade to enable DVD playback.

At which point they will simply all come with the DVD playback function, as the license has already been payd for

Remember, that the 50$ price drop is associated with NO WII SPORTS.

So instead you will have to pay 50$ to buy WiiSports seperately.

The reason it is more now is because retailers complained about the low console price, and not being able to make much off of it. So Nintendo bundled it with WiiSports...ever wonder why Japan's Wiis were cheaper? NO WII SPORTS.

But new colors would be nice..

hmm... why didn't they originally have dvd playback? and what about all the people who already bought wii's and want dvd playback.

maybe it's some kind of scheme by nintendo.. to use the dvd drive as some sort of bait to lure everyone into buying an unmodable system - with "FREE upgrades/replacement of older wiis!" lol

I'm not sure why DVD play back is so important to people. The majority of homes already have some sort of DVD playback whether it be a standalone player, ps2, computer, etc.
