Tutorial  Updated

Backing up and Editing Saves using Ironhax/Tubehax.

Intro
Using the Homebrew Launcher, we can backup any save, whether on a physical cartrage, or downloaded from the EShop. The editing of these saves depends on the game. Some games have dedicated editors, some do not. If they do not have an editor for your chosen game, you may be able to edit them with a Hex editor, but, it could be risky. The chance of Brick is next to none, as in zero, but with no guarantee for complete messing/stupidity.

First of all, set up Tubehax, and if you can, Ironhax.

Tubehax
Smealum's guide is very good, and can be found here, along with all the necessaries.
I recommend following that guide.
REMINDER/NOTE: If you have setup Tubehax/Ironhax at launch, you may need the newer boot file which can be found here. If in doubt, download it.

Savedata Manager
Now, you need to download save data manager from here. Extract it, using your favourite extractor, to the 3ds SD card ensuring that the binary is located in a directory in the 3ds directory. For example; My SD card goes like this on a Windows computer.
D:/3ds/savedata/
With the final *.3dsx file located in there.

Backing up, Editing, and Injecting
This part must be followed carefully, failure to do so may result in a broken save. The absolute crucial part is to NOT open the game during the time between backup in injection. Do NOT open the game. Don't do it.

  1. Launch up the Homebrew Menu through your preferred means. (Ironhax, Tubehax, or Ninjhax)
  2. Select the Savedata manager and confirm the choice with A.
  3. Using the DPad, change the selection of the game to the one you wish to backup.
  4. Press A to backup. NOTE: Some people have reported broken screens. No idea, sorry.
  5. Press X to exit then power off the 3ds. DO NOT START THE GAME TO CHECK IT HASN'T BROKEN IT.
  6. Insert into your computer and make edits using an editor, or manually. I'll link to some editors below. NOTE: The saves are located in the root of the sd card in a directory.
  7. Place the updated save on your SD card. In the same directory, ensuring that there are no other saves present. You have one shot at the injection!
  8. Place the SD card into your 3DS, boot up the 3DS, start the Homebrew Menu, go into the save manager, and select the same game. Hit B to Inject.
  9. Press X to exit the save manager, press START in the Homebrew Menu, and press A to restart.
  10. Boot up the game.

Why should I not open the Game?
Some games use a value in the game save which changes every time the game saves. This value is also stored on the SD card. If these values are not the same, the game says the save is corrupted or a similar error. When you load up the game after backing up, the numbers do NOT match, and so if you restore the save, it will reject it.

Editors

EDIT: A list of save editors has been made by someone: Here
The list that used to be here will now be removed in favour of that one.

End Note
I wrote this, and I'm human, so I may have made a mistake. Please point it out.

Get_fs:USER handle 0x0

Open archive 0xC920454F
Could not access the savedata archive! Press X to exit.

I get this every time I boot it up on both my New 3DS XL and 2DS. I can't do anything else other than Press X to Exit.

I got that problem twice, first was I choose "System settings" because I didn't change the app when I press A in homebrew channel, second was when I tried to import a savedata in a game that haven't created a "savedata file" yet. Hope could help you =)

You could add the Animal crossing new leaf save editor http://usuaris.tinet.cat/mark/acnl_editor/

This one is ok ish: http://descrossing.tumblr.com/post/114052970657/how-to-use-the-acnl-ram-editor
If you have any questions you can ask me, I kinda figured it out myself. (Note this is not my guide)

How do I edit the map if I dont have the acnlram.bin?

You dont need acnlram.bin . If you backed up your save look in the saveDataBackup folder and get garden.bin. Put it some where (I put mine on desktop) and on the website, http://usuaris.tinet.cat/mark/acnl_editor/ click anywhere to get rid of the notice and then click and choose your file. That is all you need. Ignore anything that that guide says about leaftools it is very outdated

Can someone help me with this issue. I've been trying to import saves for Omega Ruby, and Pokemon X, yet the save_manager crashed and brings me back to the homebrew screen.

Hello I am with the pokemon shuffle save editor itself. I can successfully back up my save to the SD card and also open the save editor and input values to edit the save and then save the changes to the SD card, but when I import the save and start up the game nothing happened.

I am having trouble with...sorry.

People have noted that if the SaveData folder contains anything other than the save, it fails to load.

Well, my MH4U data corrupted itself. I used the save manager, selected the appropriate game, and it just froze up. I was not given the prompt to back up and pressed no buttons. So I went into the root and found that there was a back up folder now present. It had both users1 and user2, which I can only assume is the monster hunter data. So I loaded it up in an editor and everything was there. I'm guessing this shitty homebrew app corrupted it, that or the backup process was running behind the frozen screen and I interrupted it by shutting it off. I backed up whatever files where output and came from the SaveDataBackup folder.

EDIT: I don't know if this is just a fluke effort, but I got my saves back. I had fresh saves and edited saves. I just got the app to replicate the Backup folder again, placed the fresh files in it, and went through the save manager and injected them in. However, I am still unable to see anything and it acts as if it is frozen. I'm not even sure if I injected them in. I hit X and it shuffles through somethings and shows a "?" block on the side. I just pressed B and shut down my device manually. I loaded up MH and there they were. I am still hesitant to exit the game, as I'm unsure of what will happen. But I had everything updated properly and managed to get myself out of the rut.

Yeah, these broken screens are a known issue. The app, however, works perfectly fine behind that screen, so you just have to know what buttons to press, and wait until you are confidant to power off. However, I do not see how the programming corrupted your save, you yourself stated that the editor loaded it properly?

The editor loads up fine until it gets to the actual press X, A, B screen one my old XL. I'm assuming that this is the broken screen thing? Seems to work behind it all I think. Managed to edit my ACNL file without a hitch

I've just decided to steer clear of any other complications I might encounter while using the app. I had assumed the program was running regardless of if my screen would show the processes. That is how I implemented the back up and got my data back. Regarding the corrupted saves, I simply loaded up the app, picked the game I wanted to load, and it froze up as has been explained several times in this thread. I shut down and looked into my root. There was a back up folder with several user files. Considering I did not actively press the A to back it up, I didn't think I would encounter losing my data. Evidently something happened and the files were now in my Backup directory. Again it was some kind of fluke happening. But I won't be messing with this until the frozen screen bug is fixed and I'm not taking shots in the dark.

not sure why but when i try to use the PKhex, it works just fine until loading the file. It just glitches on the "press B to import" and takes me back to the homebrew menu.
This is while using the latest boot file. also digital versions of games, when i try to backup my physical copies i just get the error as some users before

EDIT: I fixed it. Turns out the other backups from my acnl game were interfering. Always keep an empty savedata file when backing up and importing from Pokemon game

The screen glitches for mh4 but you can restore or backup. Just press A or B. That happens on acnl too
