Has the year been disappointing for the 3DS so far for games?

We are almost in September...

In the DS days we had a decent game a week in its peak. We should be about the peak right now in the 3DS's life.

Before you start the "but the power is over 9000" crap and a good game a week is unrealistic. Its not that powerful, and we don't need graphic for a good game but it might help. Sheeeeeeeeit a decent game a month would have been okay.

Has big N lost its mojo?

I think every year separately has been disappointing, if every year was put into one year then that would be a good year. I think the first year the 3DS launched was the worst.

I don't think 9000 has been had by the 3DS.

Wait until the busy holiday release schedule is over before final judgment. But yeah, no question the 3ds is slowing down as they prepare for the next platform.

That being said, it was the best 3ds year for me by far given that I'm a fan of hacking/homebrew.

Last year is like a gold mine.. This year is just shite. top rated 4 games this year is like ports or VC.

Yes has hacking been great.

I like mario games the most, and I wasn't impressed with any of the mario games on the 3DS except for mario kart 7 of course. I didn't buy any 3DS games for my self this year, and only 2 at the most for my daughter. I think 2013 is the year I bought most of my games.

I didn't know homebrew was included in this topic because this year the 3DS did hit 9000 as far as homebrew is concerned.

I mean games only.

But yeah hacking got over 9.9000. But homebrew hasn't reached the levels of Wii & DS _yet_ IMO.

Moonshell was mind blowing for a homebrew.

It's because Iwata was the only smart person at Nintendo
jk
well maybe
But, to answer the first question, yes. I haven't bought a 3DS game since like SSB4 came out.

This is why I have an Japanese EmuNAND.

1st off: The games from Americas are crap (Except the Mario, Zelda, and some english-translation games, to name a few), because mostly 3rd Party games appear in the 3DS scene except for games like "Puyo Puyo", River City Ransom, and possibly EARTHBOUND. :glare:

2nd: The American developers for Video Games are pretty stupid. Not to be rude or anything. Like Reggie, president of NOA, he is trying to prevent EarthBound to be released. EarthBound is a pretty great game, actually. It showcases Ness trying to save the world from Giygas. Puyo Puyo's translations are pretty stupid as well. Like Dr. Robotics Mean Bean Machine replaces Puyo Puyo 1 from the Game Gear. I mean, why does Sega replace such a blue-puddled character with BEANS?! And also, River City Ransom hasn't been in the works in YEARS, except for in 2006 for GBA, and in the NES days. In Japan, it's different. They got a whole COLLECTION full of games. Petty dumb that not much of NOA didn't want this game released anyway. Or perhaps the ol' company closed down, not sure.

3rd: The Japanese develop everything. Name it: Anime, Video Games, possibly some everyday objects (China is the usual one who does this), and some more. While us Americans just find it hard to develop video games because we don't have the skill to do SO. Much rather than Iwata, which died... but the English needs SOMETHING to do about this!

I am terribly sorry if I insulted everybody in this post. Just telling my true thoughts about this. I may check the Japanese eShop more, but I also missed the USA eShop as well. The last time I checked on the USA eShop was on (Maybe) March or April. But I checked it again on a friends 3DS a few weeks ago. Not much except for that Project Mirai game that's gonna come out internationally which is surprising.

My USA New 3DS will arrive on my house estimated tomorrow maybe 1:00 PM Central Time (I live in Kentucky so yeah). I got big plans for it when it arrives (DS Profile Exploit, unlink Japanese EmuNAND, relink my old EmuNAND, system transfer, etc.).

You know, not everyone speak (or can read) Japanese.
There are many reasons that makes a CEO unwilling to release a game: most of them are economy related, others are the difficulty of translating a game from Japanese not only from a language perspective, but culturally too.
As a european I admire USA's translators that make possible to understand a lot of good games coming from Japan, and if you check carefully, between originally japanese title those who are available worldwide are more "occidental" rather than the niche anime games.
Also, you mentioned the japanese develop about almost everything and to me, it's not a good thing. More games != (not equals) better games, and usually means the opposite.

Ohhhhhhhhh... probably messed up BIG time. :(

Oh well. The thing is, I thought some Japanese games were better, and I totally felt sad of that. I know 3rd Party games (Like movie-based games, for example) are stupid, but it's the only way to keep the 3DS scene survive, I guess.

The Japanese developing everything thingy is a bad thing? Why is that? Is it because of something bad?

I also didn't know your an European (Italy like your flag says). I wonder how much Europeans are in GBATemp anyway?

I don't think its been too bad. Its certainly not the strongest year but the end of 2014 was absolutely packed for the 3ds. Its still gotten a few good titles and I doubt I'm the only one who is using this time to pick up games I missed out on before at a cheap price

I think they started off the beginning of the year really strongly with titles like Zelda Majora's Mask 3ds, Monster hunter 4 3ds and Xenoblade Chronicles 3ds. But yea after that its been really pitiful and the rest of the year does not look that much better either. The only one that I might try is Yo-Kai Watch because I really enjoy stuff from level 5 and the game also looks interesting. The titles I am really looking forward to don't come until 2016 year which include Fire Emblem Fates, Bravely Second and both Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest VIII (Assuming that they even come at all) Yes I know there is a "Zelda" game coming to 3ds but its multiplayer and if it plays anything like 4 swords did than I am going to pass on it.

NOA's biggest problem is Reggie. He's an untalented, clueless hack, albeit charismatic. I mean seriously, if he wasn't charismatic he would have rightfully lost his job quite a while ago. Almost every NOA success, including the DS and Wii marketing campaigns, were successful because he WASN'T apart of it. The last truly successful campaign he ever lead was the Big Foot Pizza at Pizza Hut. Everything at NOA has largely been middling successful or successful in SPITE of him. I assume he's some sort of major bean counter to still be there because I really don't see how he can be viewed as a successful lead for the NOA branch. He's really a disgrace. Nice guy but he's terrible at his job from a forward thinking point of view.

I do find it funny how you describe western vs japanese devs. Truly clueless, really. Japanese industry is seeing contractions and tough financial futures whereas out west it's just the opposite outside of the Arcade market. Japan gets unique games, sure, but largely many of them are indeed unmarketable or highly risky. There are some choice titles over there on Nintendo platforms that would do well in the States but Reggie keeps stonewalling most efforts to localize.

Is this true?

Wow. I didn't really know that Reggie might be behind all this. I guess he DID put it as disappointing during the year.

@Flame, I guess that probably might answer your question. Reggie probably might be the one who is making the year disappointing... for the 3DS. Wii U is a "not sure".

As such, I think I know my next GoAnimate video if I return my GoPremium subscription: "The GBATemp community teaches Reggie a lesson about the disappointment of Video Games and Gateway 3DS/NinjHAX" (Yes, it a long title). :rofl2:

If it wasn't for monster hunter and DS backwards compatibility, maybe. But it pales in comparison to my disappointment of the WiiU. Its just shamefull, they recently released devils third without any announcement or media attention, it is that bad ><
By now we should have had a new pokemon game for the main series announced... but I guess we're getting pokken tournament and mystery dungeon, neither of wich i'm interested in.

3DS is still my favorite game system right now, it has everything I want, and its portable.

I think most of the "signature" games of 3DS, like SM3DL and ALBW, have already been released. There's still a few games (including Zero Escape 3!) coming in 2015/2016, not as many and not as iconic as 2013/2014, but still a decent line-up.

Main games coming in 2015/2016 (not counting Monster Hunter 4 and Majora's Mask)
Zero Escape 3
Fire Emblem Fates
Dragon Quest ??
Metroid Prime: Federation Force
Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer
Triforce Heroes
Xenoblade Chronicles 3DS
Hyrule Warriors 3DS

the relative strength of Japanese media exports is extremely weak compared to what it was even 10 years ago. The Japanese game industry especially is a much smaller fraction of the games industry as a whole. This means that the japanese domestic market can support games itself that can't compete in the international markets. Furthermore, unlike Sony who supports smaller developers on their platform, Nintendo doesn't draw in foreign developers on the same scale or indie developers almost at all.

Another point is that while I hate the lack of physical controls as much as anyone, I have to admit that Nintendo is getting beat by the rise of smartphone and tablet gaming. Being a developer myself i can say that Nintendo has the only consoles that I can't ever see myself justifying developing for because the barrier to entry is smaller, the support for industry standard tools is lower, and the market is just smaller.

TLDR: this is a bad era for nintendo not just a bad year

I kinda changed my views on what I consider disappointing, if it was on the GBA and/or DS days I would be disappointed but the current market state makes it almost impossible to be like it was years ago.
