For 2DS, what happened to me, Install Downgraded System Setting App and then Format, cause something like a "semi-brick", when it start up again, it ask you to turn on the 3D Slider, which obviously doesn't exist and can't continue from that point, need a Hard-Mod to restore it.

Just follow this guide and you'll be good, and make sure to get the proper screwdriver or you will strip the screws, and I can tell you by experience that it is the worst thing in the electronic world.

It's only with the 2ds, the others are safe.
No no removing the sd while in emunand doesn't brick the 3ds, it just freezes it (experienced multiple time). But how can a 3ds get bricked while formatting the emunand?!
I'm pretty sure it is pulling stuff from the NAND directly and if it messes up when it is copying, I'm pretty sure it corrupts a file. I dunno. Just my theory
If gateway reads nand sectors how can it damage them... @gamesquest1 Any clue?
I was so close to formatting my n3ds sysnand with downgraded mset to unlink sysnand and emunand two days ago. So glad I just formated emunand instead. I didn't knew it would have caused brick and I even forgot to look it up. That was a close one. 
Q: How can i restore my SYSTEMSETTINGS (MSET) for sys/emuNAND?
A: Install the right version/TitleID for your Firmware or restore untouched Backup

for euro put 0004001000022000 and version put 8202 (not EUR) then dl and check MD5, that what i did and MD5 was good
linked sysnand + update emunand using rxtools = not brick, but sysnand updated
