My dad's birthday is coming up and me and my mum decided to get him a 32gb iPad Air. Unfortunately, all I know is Android and I'm pretty much new to anything iOS related.

So far, he also has an iPhone 5s so is it possible that pictures he has taken on his phone or stored on his phone will be viewable on the iPad?

He does like watching movies but I guess the idea of an App that stream movies is out of the question and won't be available on the iTune store.

Another question is that he owns a DSLR camera with a compact flash card. Is it really a simple case of buying an adapter, plug it into the lightning port and it can view the photos on the iPad?

Puffin browser: safari is the climax of apple´s restrictions, better look for alternative web browsers
Adobe reader: For PDFs is way better than ibooks. But i woud recommend ibooks for epub format books
I downloader: Again apple´s restrictions wont let you download by the traditional way, so you can use its internal browser for downloading files
AVplayer HD: the best video player i know for iOS. It even plays full HD mkv files with different format subtitles!!Its streaming features let you watch movies from dropbox or google drive (if 32 gb is not enough ;)).

The photos in his iPhone can be transferred through bluetooth. He is lucky, iDevices bluetooth only works for apple devices.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

As for the DSLR camera flash card, i would transfer it to a computer first an then o the iPad. Since its lack of a file manager that recognises external drives, you must look for an specific app, wich i doubt you´ll find at the app store. Sorry man

Wow, I never knew iPad can be super restrictive but since my dad used an iPhone for an entire year without any problem, I guess it's better than him calling up everyday with a problem.

I believe if he has iCloud active, he can view his photos on any iDevice with his account logged in.

You can use iCloud Photostream to sync the photos between the iPad and iPhone.

You should use Safari as a Browser since it is much faster (3rd party browser are not allowed to use some functions and the fast engine of safari)

As a video player you vould use VLC or the legal streaming apps like netflix hulu etc.

For the DSLR you can buy the original Apple to SD card adapter, if you plug it in the photos app opens and you can import the photos.

I would try to install only the needed apps and mostly use Apples App to keep the experience the same (or you could figure out what apps he uses on his phone)

Jailbreak it, lock down updates and restores, install some shadymovie repos $$$PROFIT$$$
But really, if he is looking for more functionality I would go with a jailbroken device.
How technical is he?
If he is used to iOS and never used android he might want to stay unless he is willing to learn.
If he is comfortable with iOS but wants more functionality definitely jailbreak.
