Okay, I'll bite: if you're a game developer, why do you care about how the hacking audience feels about the kernel exploit?
I don't actually have the dev kits right now, but I plan to have all of them by the end of 2020. In the meantime, I'm just helping out the Homebrew scene because I was really into the Wii hacking, back in 2008 or so!

Hello. First I wish you all the good luck.
In my opinion it will require a lot of energy to port games to too many systems, and old-gen hardware won't sell anyway. Maybe it would be better if you define your objective and focus on profitable consoles (PS4, X1, WiiU).

Nowadays there are a lot of games companies. To make a successful game, one must come with a very very original idea, never-seen-before storyline and graphics, and a decent gameplay. In other words the game must have something "unforgettable" about it. Remember: games (but not necessarily all games) that were successful in the past were the games that somewhat "defined the genre". For instance: Resident Evil for survival/horror, Sonic and mario for platformers, Gran turismo for racing simulation, Street fighter II for fighting...etc.

I m not discouraging you, in the contrary I just wanted to underline that making a successful game in this era is risky, and not a simple task at all. If you copy without adding creativity the game development project will fail.

On topic: I also find it a good idea to create a separate sub-forum dedicated only to developers.
Hi!
I looked at your post, and now I'm starting to think that I should just develop for the latest consoles (Especially NX). As well as this, My ideas are semi-unique in a way that there are just unique game-play styles, characters/character items and strong storylines! I'm scrapping old-console versions (they weren't meant to be ports, like I say); I have no idea what I was smoking last night regarding that!
Also, you'll be glad to hear that the games I'll be making will all be free! (In-app purchases may be included)

lets keep it real - we all want the kernel exploit because it could help to enable piracy at some point. everyone who is anxious knows this.

stop being all holier than thou and just admit it :) i know i do in the end want piracy

Kind of pointless... you could legally own all worthy Wii U games for a couple of bucks.
No pirate that respects his profession would board a boat just full of rats and no gold.

Correct, besides a couple of games, the Wii U isn't really that "wow" of a console, if this was the PS2 kind of console, hackers would be attacking non stop that console until it gets some result, but this isn't the case, the Wii U has little variety of interesting games, and yes i know that some people will say: "But Mario X or LOZ X", when a game console has mainly the games of the own company that created the console, it's not a good sign, kinda like Dreamcast (Although the security in this one was laughable, really laughable, you could literally burn any iso disc on it, and the console will run that CD)

its not just the piracy that is nice, its the way it works that makes it awesome. if it werent for USB loaders for Wii, I would never have played half as much Wii as I did. I really am too lazy to get up and put a disc in and I am NOT paying the same price for digital copy as hard copy, thats insane. digital copy should be half the disc price as there is NO value to it in the end. /end offtopicrant

Although i always like USB Loaders, you won't have much to dig, it's like a big treasure with few games, the Wii U has far less games than the Wii, and most of the Wii U games are ports, Nintendo games, and some indie games, but i agree that is always nice to plug your own Hard Drive with your Backup and enjoy the game, if in the future there is a really good, good Wii U game that makes me screaming, i'll pick the BL for Wii U

Piracy isn't so important now, it's important in 10 years from now, when you want to play some obscure game that is only available as WiiUware but the eshop for Wii-U was shut down years ago and there's absolutely no way to get it. (Or when the game was on a disk, but it now costs $150 on Ebay and the author will get no money even if you do pay the $150.)

Less popular systems like Wii-U, CDi, DSi as something distinct from DS, and such are especially prone to this.

Please please please DO NOT enable RAM editing for online games. Please. The LAST thing I want is for the Wii U to be overrun with cheaters in Splatoon or Black Ops 2.

Online cheaters were a plague on the Wii. Let's not allow it to happen on the Wii U.

For now, it can't be done on the latest Wii U firmware anyway, but once that is the case it might be the right time to take care of that.

I would suck many dicks for it. Granted, I enjoy sucking dicks so I guess that doesn't make me all that desperate.

As far as what I would do with it though - I actually have experience modding Brawl on the Wii, so I could start messing with things on Smash U and maybe try doing stuff in other games too.
That's nice to know, I'm glad you shared that with us all! I live in the West Midlands by the way look me up, I've got a big 12inch one hangin and the exploit ready for you! Just thought you might want to know

Look, I know there are downsides to the RAM editing, such as online cheating, but you can do some pretty amazing stuff on it such as reading file structures, reading the OS info, etc. etc.

Anyway, you need the latest firmware version to be able to go into online battle, anyway. (Don't actually know whether this is true or not.)

Doesn't Nintendo write code to the game that detects any changes to the values made in the RAM, anyway?

I'd be willing to pay upto $100 for a working kernal/rom loader. I'm sure there are plenty others that share this sediment.

Honestly, I have simple tastes... I'm most looking forward to emulators being playable with the gamepad. Off-tv is an amazing convenience, and the gamepad screen is perfectly sufficient for old-school games. Sure, you can already use vWii mode emulators... But then you have to attempt to prop up your gamepad in some fashion, grab a Wii remote + classic controller pro, and possibly some batteries which the Wiimotes like to eat. While the eShop's selection of vc titles is growing, I know it will never be anywhere near all the old-school games I want to play on my gamepad. This is something I'm excited for, but I've waited since the system came out, so I can wait a little longer.

Of course, save game backups/transfers and region block bypassing are a plus. And I would definitely enjoy some homebrew like custom levels for Super Mario 3D World, but the amount of quality homebrew in any hacking scene is always limited and takes a long time to develop. If the kernal exploit was released today, that would not cause a flood of high-quality custom content... Quite the opposite, in fact. For this reason, I'm not really that desperate, because an earlier release is not going to help actual development.
