New Android Device - The W3D - Preorder on Amazon!

Definitely thought this device deserves a bit more of a spotlight. I had the chance to play it at this year's E3 last week, and the console is actually available now for pre-order on Amazon.com. It's a smartphone colliding with the Nintendo 3DS at this point, and it has the following specifications:
  • 8 core CPU
  • 2 GB RAM built in
  • Starting with 16 GB internal storage and support for up to 64GB MSD
  • 5.5" 1080p HD display with 3D stereoscopic screen capable of "Eye-tracking", similar to the New 3DS
  • Dual joystick controls, including shoulder buttons
The device also has the following features:
  • Open Source: Download and play games from any Google-based distribution platform
  • Dual Sim, unlocked GSM and CDMA for 4G LTE support
  • Long-Lasting Battery Life: Five to seven hours of battery life for playing with 10 to 16 hours of battery life on standby via a 4000mAH battery
  • Fully Compatible with Touch Screen Android Games: W3D's unique button interface allows any previous Android touch screen game to be customized by the end user.
  • Launches with Android 4.4
I personally loved it, when I got my hands on it. I didn't receive a price on that day at the convention, but I do have one now - it's $399 on Amazon. I think that this has a decent chance of kicking off, and this company was incredibly confident in their presentation. Looking forward to seeing what else comes out of it!

They are actually using the K1 for their Obox and not their handheld. Which is strange since the shield tablet came out at $300, if iirc. Maybe 3d is taking a big chunk out of the price. Maybe for the battery or maybe not to pull away from their own console. I keep reading on sites that there may be a non 3d version.

Wtf? Is that the defenition to "open source" nowadays? :wtf::wtf:
I meant to say this before, the Ouya comes to mind.

Well for like $20 you can get a psp, mod it, and play GB/GBC/GBA, NES, SNES, some N64 (pretty crap compatibility but still), PS1, PSP, and probably some other stuff Im forgetting. I guess you can't play those fantastic f2p games but don't we all already have other devices for that?
Can't make phone calls or use 4G on its own. Has a better screen, including 3D and touchscreen. Has more buttons. Uses regular SD cards. If you don't plan to use UMD, you don't have to worry about the drive in the back. Even if it isn't the strongest, it can run emulators better. While you joke, it also doesn't have access to the Android Market.

I take it you haven't tried the most recent build of Dolphin from November, then, because I haven't had any crashes on the games I've tested since the last build on my Shield Tablet. Mario Kart Double Dash still runs ~30-40fps in Time trial mode (like 25fps in grand prix, which is still "playable" but, y'know, annoyingly slow :P), Luigi's Mansion still boots up fine and runs at about 25fps, Super Smash Bros Melee runs at about 20fps, Crazy Taxi runs at a nice 45fps, sometimes you can even get it up to 55 in smaller areas in town. Animal Crossing is supposed to be quite playable for the most part but I haven't tried it cuz I'm not much of a fan of AC...

It's not a huge list, but there are definitely some games that can be launched and "played" on the Android build. It's nowhere near perfect, of course, but it doesn't mean it doesn't work either :P
Sheesh, I had no idea they made that much progress on Dolphin for Android already.

If it can do PSP Emulation, I'm in.

It's Android, so it can do PSP emulation. Look up PPSSPP on the Google Play store, it works really well.

Brand new Android device... Yet comes with an old version if Android. Dick move, developers.

Typically things like this are being worked on up to 1-2 years before they are released. Since development on this phone probably started around then, 4.4 was all the rage (it just came out with the S5 last August).

In fact, they are probably working on a release of 5.0 for the device, but there were a lot of changes between 4.4 and 5.0. Incremental changes, say 4.4 to 4.5, etc. would be a lot easier to manage, but I know that Verizon totally botched my update from 4.4 to 5.0 on the S5, and had to issue me a replacement to go back to 4.4. So I imagine they are working through the same kind of issues.

I run 5.1 Lollipop nightlies on my S4, no issues so far. :)

For many Verizon devices it is since they are dicks and want locked bootloaders from the manufacturer. :ha: I am trying to patiently wait for the day when (hopefully) there is no less than a perm root on my non-DE Note 4.

It will probably be rootable and get custom recovery as long as it is popular enough. So it may not have first party support for 5.0 but will probably get third party support.

That's kinda neat, though there's almost no good games on android, and even less that use actual controls. I don't keep up with phones since I got a new one a year or so ago and wont need one for a while, but the specs sound nice for the price. Though still morbidly overpriced like all phones. Built in storage is pretty skimpy for a gaming phone too.
There are tons of nice emulators like MAME4droid, ppsspp and Drastic (NDS) to name a few that use real controls.

Considering this is the closest thing to a Xperia Play 2, I'm sure there will be some kind of group updating it.
In fact, the community is still supporting the Xperia Play.

You can also map controls to on screen buttons.

It's not like it's difficult to do. >.>

It's not difficult to do, but in the working world and MDM (Mobile Device Management), there are checks in place that will not allow rooted devices to sync email/corporate data, much like my work does. I actually had to get an S5 upgrade from an S3 because I couldn't remove the root on the S3 (even though I followed all steps, it still showed as rooted).

And check out all of the issues people had with the S5 after the 5.0 update. I've heard they fixed a lot, but I'm not willing to go through all that crap again. lol

I can't find any use for this thing.

Most android games don't even support controller and most devices these days can run the emulators pretty well.
