Homu & Canzah, if you accept suggestions for potential undubs: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers. God damn does this one need an undub..

One of the Persona Q undubbers here. I'll take a look into it and see what I can do. Dunno how quickly that'll take as it depends on how fast "acquiring" the Japanese game takes.

Wow that'd be awesome. I just found a message by Canzah on the other site saying it would be difficult to do due to how the audio is stored and that he passes.. if you manage to do it tho, please use the USA rom as base.

Hmm, I see what he means. The voice file is basically a giant "voice.bin" file which is simply a compilation of loads of cwavs which are commonly used with 3DS stuff. The bin's header doesn't really tell much except being a cwav something.

I'll test some stuff out once I got the Japanese one as well.

Is anyone considering making a PROPER undub for Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker ?
Someone created an undub for this game (available on that iso site..) but
1. it comes as .cia
2. it screws up the save encryption format
3. it breaks spotpass
4. it seems to break MSET on 4.x systems
5. there is still english audio left in the game :S

Just wondering..

1. Should be pretty easy to re-encrypt it into a 3DS, there are tools around for doing that at the click of a button.
5. The undubber wasn't thorough enough and hurried along a release without checking all the files. I found loads of voice related sound effects in other parts of the PQ ROM that needed replacement in folders you normally wouldn't bother checking. If the undubber had compared the MD5/SHA-1 of all the files in the Japanese release and the English release, he'd find them.

The rest, I dunno. Strange that it breaks mset since it's not a DS game, and save encryption considering it's a cia.

Oh and about the Soul Hackers undub, I've been extremely lazy and forgot about it quickly. I did try it out once and it wouldn't "mount" in the Gateway menu which is guaranteed due to me not properly creating a RSF from scratch. I'll get back to it and see what I can do unless someone has already done it.

I'll just quickly do a sneaky double post here to explain what happened to the Soul Hackers undub.

I just now tried it out after finding out that I made the dumb mistake of not repacking the romfs before using makerom and that it needed a custom RSF instead of a exheader inject as injecting the exheader would cause it to be unable to mount in the GW menu. Thus I created a custom RSF for it and ran it with the proper files replaced.

While the game works, it will freeze the moment any form of speech is spoken in the game and I don't think there's any way of getting this one working without some extensive research. If these were simple files that could be changed, it would be easy. However this requires decompressing the "VOICE.BIN" file for both Japanese and English voices, and then recompressing it properly, or somehow change how the voices are detected by the game.

Since all the text in the game is in plain text inside different .BIN and .EVE files that are scattered all over the ROM, I decided to try and see what would happen if I replaced them in the Japanese ROM with their English counterparts and while it worked for some files and it did show translated text in some areas, it freezed again if I replaced all of the bins and eves that were proven to be changed between the two versions. This probably means one of those .BINs has essential code that differentiates the two versions and most likely contains all the speech code, or at least critical code.

So to wrap this up, I don't think this is happening without some really extensive research on the different files and how they work together. Neither the English 'nor the Japanese version wants anything to do with each other, despite being almost completely identical in 90% of the files. That giant VOICE.BIN file clearly is the bane of this undub project and I personally won't pursue this further. I have to say though, this game is quite interesting in that all the backgrounds, sprites and such are just plain tga files that are available for viewing.

I've included the two RSF files for the Japanese version and the English (European). I've also included the MD5 hashes of all the files in both of the versions, plus a file tree in both of them. Not sure if any of those will be of use, but I'll put them here anyway. If anyone decides to continue on with this, good luck!
