OnLive shuts down, parts of the company bought by Sony

Streaming business and video games have been available for a few years now. It started with OnLive in 2010 with the release of the streaming microconsole. The service worked relatively well, but it never gained large consumer interest. Now the service will be shut down for good in the end of this month.

After five years of uninterrupted service, the OnLive Game Service will be coming to an end. Sony is acquiring important parts of OnLive, and their plans don’t include a continuation of the game service in its current form. Your service should continue uninterrupted until April 30, 2015. No further subscription fees will be charged, and you can continue to play all of your games until that date.

Seems like the service was a bit ahead of its time, but luckily the experiment wasn't for nothing with Sony buying the patents among other things.

This is why I don't like the idea of these kind of game services. I prefer to have the game on my end so if something happens, I can still play them.

Dude, the stream was perfect but I had a 4 seconds lag. VERY unplayable in Europe.

Also, I really don't want to be the guy who actually bought games full price in there...

To be fair, the cloud gaming is still evolving. Everyone knew the chances they took when they got into OnLive all those years back - I'll give it another couple of years until you see a strong platform (PS Now, etc)

Pretty much this, and I was even in the closed beta for the service ages ago in like 2009

It was nice when I used it a couple years ago but it just went nowhere real fast. The library never updated and it got only a couple games a year.

Hopefully Sony can cannibalize it and add it to PS Now.

Will be losing a good 20+ games and my micro console is now a brick but It's OK. I still have PlayCast on my OUYA and they seem to have some decent games. at 7.99 monthly. I will have to get a Wii U copy of Deus Ex but so far that's the only major drawback.

I remember trying this program a couple years ago and it worked flawlessly but frankly, Sony or Microsoft needed to take over it.

A game streaming service (the Netflix of games) is bound to happen and it's ideal as there's a lot of people who've already moved over to the digital format and don't care about keeping the game.
