If you look at Nintendo's history..

Game Boy (1989)
Game Boy Pocket (1996) 6 years
Game Boy Light
Game Boy Color (1998) 2 years

Game Boy Advance (2001) 3 years
Game Boy Advance SP ( 2003) 2 years
Game Boy Advance SP w/ Backlight (2005)
Game Boy Micro (2005)

Nintnendo DS (2004) 1 year
Nintendo DS Lite (2006) 2 years
Nintendo DSi (2009) 3 years
Nintendo DSi XL (2010) 1 year

Nintendo 3DS (2011) 1 year
Nintendo 3DS XL (2012) 1 year
Nintendo 2DS (2013) 1 year
New Nintendo 3DS (2015) 2 years

Is it safe to say that based on these blocks of units (3 original GBs, then 3 GBAs) (4 DS's, then 4 3DS's) the next batch of Nintendo handhelds will be a new line all together? Or will they continue to milk the dual screen?

Two screen's is nice and 3D now that it's stable is actually looking like less of a gimmick (for those who don't get headaches from it).

My theory is they actually might have 1 or two more versions of the "New 3DS".. maybe a smaller one and maybe one with even better 3D down the road. But after that I think Nintendo might make a jump and go back to a single screen and begin to re-innovate their handheld lineup. Your thoughts?

I think the design of the next handheld will depend on whether Nintendo wants to incorporate backwards compatibility. If so, chances are it'll mean ANOTHER clamshell design. If they don't, it'll mean the oppurtunity to finally have a fresh clean start without a clunky backwards compatibility like the Wii U where playing the old Wii games requires some sandbox mode.

2DS and Android DS emulators has proved that it IS possible to have 3DS games running on one giant screen so it wouldn't be impossible to imagine a Nintendo tablet built out of plentiful 7" display units.

My personaly opinion? Nintendo's next handheld will probably be a retooled Wii U gamepad with HD display but it can be hooked up to a TV and it'll function like a home console.

first we had a monochrome screen
then colour screen
then a bigger panoramic colour screen
then 2 screens, one of them being touch
then 2 bigger screens (dsi xl)
then 2 screens one being a 3D screen
edit: THEN 1 SCREEN PRETENDING TO BE 2 DIFFERENT SCREENS (2DS)

screens are overated, they keep us closed minded.
next portable handheld will have NO SCREENS!

Yeah I left out the Light since it was Japan only and I was just using NA dates. I also completely forgot about the SP with the backlight, I'll throw it in now. I also left out Colored game boy because it wasn't really much a change but I might as well be consistent.

I am going to be an optimist and say Nintendo will be the company to show us how to this mobile phone business properly.

tells us your vision?
cuz mine is: they create a phone or virtual store, launch about 20 mario games, and lots of the same first party games\updated games, and then die, because lack of third party interest...

If rumors are to be believed; the next console will be a hybrid between home and handheld.

So a handheld with power to surpass Wii U that you can take about for portable gaming, but then plug into your TV and potentially sync a controller for home console gaming.

That or 2 consoles, one hand held and one home console, but both built on the same architecture (Same processor type and same OS) so that software works between the two, may run at higher resolution or framerate etc. on the home version.
This is still just speculation at this point.

Nintendo have made it clear that they understand the need to make it so that software can flow between the both and it will be easier to dev for.

Whatever the new system will be.I'd like Nintendo to keep the glass-less 3D feature.Personally I want an 3D HD screen with ability to play on TV

I think the New Nintendo 3DS still have a big life ahead, since it's becoming increasingly difficult to balance power and battery life.

The New Nintendo 3DS showed us that 3D is here to stay. I also think Nintendo is quite satisfied with dual screens and resistive screen. So we should expect a portable similar to the New Nintendo 3DS, only with higher resolution and better graphics. I do hope they take battery life into consideration this time.

Dear god I hope not.
Why is that?

I was trying to be the optimist, not likely predict what would happen if current Nintendo tried their hand at it.

My guess is that there will be a home console and a handheld, but both will use the ARM architecture. This is not Nintendo exclusive, there is some desire in the laptop/notebook industry to switch from x86 to ARM because of the advances in the ARM architecture and less power consumption, even Apple is experimenting with this idea.

As to Nintendo, their motivation is to make software development easier and quickier, since as it is they are having a lot of trouble developing games for the Wii U and the 3DS at the same time. That's why they can only manage to focus in one or another and the 3DS hasn't got a lot of focus from Nintendo lately except for Smash Bros and ports
