Firewall alerts

Last night someone try to access to my computer

IP Address : 84.95.125.167
Location : Israel
City: Holon
Broadband provider : www.012.net
Host Name : 84.95.125.167.cable.012.net.il

however he been blocked by my firewalls x2,

be alerts....

Funny telling you.. if you from Israel

anyway they are top best firewalls
with auto daily update so it pretty hard to hack here.

ZoneAlarm Pro and Norton Internet Security.

Ok, so say I only have my Windows XP Firewall running, how would I know if I'm getting hacked by that or any guy.
I don't have any viruses on my computer, I'm sure of it.

You have alot to learn.. Windows XP Firewall are $uck alot people can still can hack through window systems and security networks
hacker can access to your computer like Remote Assistance they can see all your data file's and any your personal details
if you don't have any antiviruses software you never know if you do have viruse in your computer windows don alert you..

download ZoneAlarm firewall there a free version
and used Ad-Aware to deleting those spyware it also free
for antiviruses software a AVG Free Edition out there.

there are other free other good one out there as well....

First off let me say that your pc should always sit behind a router. Never access the internet directly.

Secondly, those "attacks" are normal. Some might be traffic running where it shouldn't and on the other hands all servers are permanently under attack all the time.

Someone from china tried to log into my server on the 24th of december, trying over a thousand times...

However I strongly advise not panicing about this, sorry lookout, but you're creating a bit of a wrong impression. People/scripts are trying to see where they can log on to ("hack"? Not really) or can do damage all the time.

So, keep your system updated and at least keep the windows firewall running, and you should be ok. But as I said, buy a router if you don't have one. Correctly configured routers will block all incoming traffic by default, and you'll be pretty safe.

I have a firewalled router, does that help?
And don't viruses run as a file and then you see them when u do Ctrl+Alt+Del?
I always check that and I've never seen anything weird, checked it on www.tasklist.org etc.

no problem, I ever have a inbound attemps to access thought my computer before
but thank point it out... I might not have correctly configured my routers

Firewalled routers protect you from a lot of things from the OUTSIDE trying to solicit any of your computers on the INSIDE (your local or internal network -- this can even be one computer in your household). A firewall will only permit a packet from the outside if it was being expected by any computer on the inside, such as running a BitTorrent program, or surfing to http://gbatemp.net in your web browser. Your firewall keeps a sort of record of what data was sent out to the internet and expects a certain response, and it will allow that response in, and any other unwanted ones, out. This is generally how a firewall works and it works very well.

Windows XP SP2's firewall works for the most part, but unfortunately it's well known on the internet how it can be DISABLED from the OUTSIDE, which makes it pretty much worthless for any power users. Casual users who don't do any "risky stuff" such as browse to unfamiliar websites, downloads any type of file or program regularly, or engages in networked communities such as KaZaa, BitTorrent, etc. will pretty much be okay with only Windows Firewall. Anybody else will want a more competent firewall, maybe even beyond what their routers offer. Already a couple great ones have been mentioned in this thread. Kerio and Zone Alarm.

It's also a good idea to check for viruses and spyware on a regular basis (between once a month to every few months -- depends on the user). AVG FREE is an excellent virus scanner. Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D are great spyware scanners. Although not any one program will "catch them all", so it's a good idea to have two different virus / spyware scanners to catch what the other one does not.

A program called "Peer Guardian" can block a whole host of IPs known to be connected with foreign & educational entities, governments, ad & spyware companies, and P2P. Oftentimes I see that I'll get connections from China, even though I'm not doing anything that would invoke connections from there! Peer Guardian blocks this, and gives me peace-of-mind. Currently, it is blocking 935,614,326 IPs.

As for seeing what's currently running in the task list, this can be fooled, and programs can run hidden from that list. To do this, they employ a sort of "kernal awareness check" which looks at the hooks that the kernal follows from every running program to the next, and it will basically re-route the next hook to itself over to the next program in line which essentially hides itself from the system (and thus from you). Most virus / spyware scanners can catch less harmful things, but when you get rootkit in your computer, it's gonna be hell to identify and remove because not even your own computer can see what's happening because the rootkit is telling your computer to "skip me" and acts like nothing is there.
