I would have said PS1 on the 3DS might be a touch too far. Yes, its easy to point to the PSP which does it pretty much flawlessly but there are quite a few aspects of PS1 emulation that the PSP is running natively (R3000 CPU in PS1 Vs R4000 CPU in PSP). That carries a lot of weight and takes an unbelievable amount of requirement off whats need to emulate the system.

I'd imagine if a PS1 emulator does crop up, it will be as sluggish as hell.

9.2 is almost guaranteed to have kernel access via ninjhax in the near future.
Smea has confirmed that he isn't working on anything else major until the N3DS is more mature. The only notable way I can think of kernel access is memchunkhax, which was patched in 9.3. It will most likely be a whole new exploit with another project name if Smea even does something new.

Not necessarily, smea had redNAND/ssspwn going on while 6.3 was in action, and it was based on 4.5. 9.2 will probably be the next 4.5 for now, at least until someone else finds another ARM11 kernel/process9 exploit.

You guys think Smealum is the only hacker? Have you forgotten kernel access was achieved before he even started his work? Did you even finish reading his post that said 9.2, not 9.3 <

No, Smea isn't the only hacker, but the comment I replied to referencing Ninjhax, Smea's work.

I can see that, but he mentioned in a later post someone else picking up where ninjhax stops and reversing gw's work. Which wouldn't be impossible.
I would assume that someone with the correct skills could use the already created Ninjhax stages with the memchunk hack to gain kernel access, but it would be a bit dumb to do that as Ninjhax relies on stages that have been patched. GPU DMA hacks have not been patched, and paired with a memchuck hack and a WebKit hack, we could have kernel access without prior purchases in theory. I have neither the time or extensive knowledge of the system to accomplish this. I bet Yellows8 has something up his sleeve he has been saving for the N3DS, though.

I think it might be doable if you can get full hardware access, including the ability to raise the base clock speed, so it would probably kill the battery.

PS1 and N64 seem possible, especially on the new 3DS, but I wouldn't hold out much hope. Better to do that on Android if that's what you want unless someone with a lot of time and talent wants to take it on.

The two systems on PC are still pretty buggy and an i7 can do a lot more brute forcing than a little undefclocked 3DS arm chip.

I don't get the obsession of emulation when any modern day smartphone can emulate a plethora of devices. Even better get a Vita or PSP which already has a ton of established and working emulators, save states and all. I do enjoy playing old Nintendo games on the 3DS but PS1 is a little much, at this rate it won't be long before people start asking for Wii emulation.

3ds+emulation=3d emulation, hopefully soon.

A while ago, many people also said that the 3DS wasn't powerful enough to emulate a SNES, or was unfit for that task for whatever other reasons. We know how that went.

There's only one way to know if the 3DS can emulate a PS1 or a N64. Try out.

Same deal regarding emulating a Wii, but I think that's largely no :P

Yeah, you fucked that theory in the ass.

yes it is.

proper question would be:

Is the 3DS powerful enough to play playstation games via an emulator at a decent speed?
And most likely the answer to that is No.
I trust the strenght of the 3DS so I say it's very likely that the 3DS is capable of emulating PS1 games at maximum speed. All that it takes is access to all the 3DS' hardware and the most important thing, proper coding.

A Nintendo64 is more simple to emulate if compared to PSX.
Lets go to see DaedalusX64 emulator for PSP what can do with N64 roms.

3DS has 128 MB RAM.
PSP has 64 MB RAM (Talking about 2000/3000/4000/5000/N1000/E1000 models)
3DS has a 266 MHZ DualCore CPU
PSP has a 333 MHZ DualCore CPU
ePSXe Emulator require at least a 200 MHZ CPU (Recommended a 1 GHZ CPU) and 256 MB RAM (Recommended 512 MB RAM)

Best results for NON NATIVE PSX emulation (so i discard POPS) on PSP is this:

So 3DS will never load PSX games at full speed.
(Maybe a good framerate for only a part of titles like DaedalusX64 can be done but absolutely not with ninjhax)

If you want to play full speed PSX games while you're not at home just buy a PSP and use NATIVE emulation through POPS.

(A PSP at this time is very cheap)

Personally, i LOVE PSP N1000 (PSP GO). It's the first (and only) REAL handheld console thanks to its sizes.
