Well, finally pulled the trigger and ordered my N3DS off amazon JP. Even without GW support at the moment, I see any reason not to trust GW when they say support is coming soon. Have they ever said they will release X then not delivered? Obviously delayed often, but I feel like they always get it done in the end.
How come you did not order from Nippon Yasan? It's cheaper there I believe.

Can you remove the microSD card from the Gateway while having the exploit running?
Also can you remove the Gateway while it's in sleep mode and then plug the cart back in before waking it up?

Once you boot into Gateway mode, you can safely remove the red card and them remove the SD card from the red card if needed. You may want to do this if you are planning on sharing the Gateway red card with other people and using .CIA
It is actually advised to not leave the red card in while your 3DS is in sleep mode because the red card gets quite hot and can be actually damaged.

Still waiting on my Gateway, might be here tomorrow.

What happens if I try to play my retail carts in sysNAND? I know you're supposed to play retail carts in Classic mode, but let's say I get booted from GW mode while I'm out of the house and can't relaunch the exploit (can't downgrade, have too many games with 6.0+ save encryption).

Would my carts and their saves still work in linked sysNAND? What about unlinked?
They will work and you are fine for now. The main reason to play them in classic mode is to prevent the cart from updating your sysnand. For now there are no 9.2+ carts with updates. That will change soon™.

No idea what the UHS part means, but both my micro SDs are UHS-I Class 10 and work fine.
Ultra High Speed.

I noticed Amazon US is selling the jap N3DS with prime. Advantage there is 30 day easy return policy if the U.S. model comes with 9.2 or below. :)

Don't forget to never leave your 3DS in sleep mode while in sysNAND since it can actually download updates for your firmware and then prompt you to update your firmware each time you boot up the console. This is actually dangerous since you can accidentally accept the prompt and update your firmware unintentionally. Always keep a backup of your 9.2 sysNAND safe somewhere.

I guess this shouldn't happen if wifi is turned off though?

Yes, that is indeed true.
But if you are planning on playing online games, then chances are you may leave the switch on.
Of course, it's not a problem to leave the 3DS in sleep mode and the WiFi switch on while in gateway mode. Just don't update your emuNAND until Gateway releases their new launcher.dat which supports the newer firmware.
Currently, their emuNAND can support 9.4 fine.

There have been reports on this board that it will still download the update with the wifi switch off. I have a clean sysnand so I have been leaving it on and have not had a problem. I can just reformat sysnand if it happens with little consequence.

I have also heard reports of streetpass updating it and Nintendo has hotspot agreements with some carriers so it could happen just walking down the street. Again I have not personally experienced this.

Thanks for the answers guys. :)

Oh, about the SanDisk EVO 32GB microSDHC mentioned earlier, it's on sale at Best Buy for $20 right now. Just picked up a couple.

For the SD card in the 3DS itself, is there any difference in performance if using a microSD w/adapter versus a regular SD card?

Yes. microSD cards are usually slower than full blown SD cards. But a decent microSD card will be faster than a cheap shitty SD card. I still suggest getting a nice SD card for the 3DS -- UNLESS you are planning on upgrading to an N3DS soon and the microSD card will be moved over to that soon.

Oh, and microSD cards are usually more expensive than SD cards as well. So...

Slightly more expensive to the US from NY and by shipping it via Tenso I can order more stuff from Amazon JP and have it added to my Tenso shipment which saves on shipping. Amazon JP has the best prices on the accessories as well like faceplates.

It's about $10 cheaper for me to order it from AmazonJP+Tenso. Plus I can add stuff to the order and get it shipped for only a small increase in ship cost. So for example for $200 I can order a charge stand, two faceplates, screen protector and N3DS.

But I just cancelled my order anyways since my gf cannot decide between the white and black N3DS. First the white since she wants a specific faceplate, then black because the Boo one looks good on it....

So I guess I'll ask if anyone knows, has NY been shipping 9.0+ JPN Black 3DS's. I went through the FW reporting thread and saw quite a few people ordering from NY getting 8.1. That is my main fear, not 9.3+ as no one has reported getting one of those yet. I'm betting that Amazon has a higher turnover than NY so a better chance to not get a launch N3DS. Even if GW says 8.1 will be supported I'd rather have the peace of mind and have one at 9.0-9.2.

Worst case scenario is I get an 8.1 system and GW never released support for it. Then I guess I gotta sell it and get my $160 back which shouldn't be hard to do considering the standard N3DS isn't coming to the US.

edit: Ehh, just decided to keep my Black N3DS order from AmazonJP+Tenso. I don't see any reason why I couldn't get at least my money back looking at prices on ebay and AmazonUS. If It comes 8.1 I might order one from NY and sell the Amazon 8.1 one.

My regular 3DSXL is 8.1 and the exploit works fine on it. I honestly don't see Gateway not supporting that firmware, as a lot of N3DS's are on it and waiting for Gateway. And Gateway would want to make sure that people that buy a new N3DS for Gateway can use Gateway.

8.1J N3DS's cannot access the browser so whatever exploit they have for 8.1J it will be different. Some rumors that GW is focusing on 9.0-9.2 support for N3DS, but that would leave a lot of people out in the cold.

Hopefully I ordered in a window where AmazonJP has cleared stock of 8.1 consoles and has yet to receive 9.3 consoles.

Accidentally updating is really hard. You're first promted with an "update? y/n" prompt where A accepts. I could see someone accidentally accepting that. After that, though, it shows you the EULA and you have to tap a pretty small "Agree" button in the bottom corner of the screen. No buttons will work, only the touch screen. The biggest danger is if someone else gets a hold of the 3DS and is like "yeah sure why not", really.

it's hard when you're adult not when you leave this in your child hands :)

It is actually advised to not leave the red card in while your 3DS is in sleep mode because the red card gets quite hot and can be actually damaged.

Also it drains the battery like no tomorrow! It barely works as a sleep mode with that thing plugged in.
