I have the following scenario. I'm running sysnand 4.2 and emunand 9.4 on a 16GB microsd. Somehow when GW launches it says Omega 2.1. I have a 64 GB Microsd coming and I would like to somehow "redo" this. Is it possible upgrade my sysnand to 9.2 (and not 9.4..I doubt this) and get my GW to 3.01? Currently, I can't install Big Blue/DevMenu or cia files and I would like to put other emulators on at some point. I'm hoping the New 3DS systems will be supported by GW as I hope to upgrade. Any thoughts?
You are running Omega 2.1 becuase that is the launcher.dat you have in the root of your internal SD card. Replace it with 3.0.1

Unless you have a NAND dump of your sysnand on 9.2 you cannot upgrade to 9.2, no games currently have 9.x system update. You can upgrade your sysnand to 8.1 with SSB. No practical difference for our purposes. if you don't have it try to borrow or rent it, performing the update will not change the cart.

I would just leave your sysnand at 4.2, so you do not have any problems playing your retail carts and messing up the saves and you can continue to use the profile exploit and not be tethered to browser exploit for higher firmwares.

This is a fairly basic question, but I think this would be the best place to make it clear - opening the Plaza/Mii Maker/other-such-things in emuNAND isn't going to make my 3DS spontaneously combust, is it? I'll assume they run on 4.0 encryption, but I just want to be 100% sure, since they could be using 6.0 encryption after a system update without me realizing it. Is everything saved to the SD card and enterchangeable between sysNAND and emuNAND?

As Mr. Jason said the answer is yes. However, if anything goes wrong and you drop out of gateway mode you can't get back in unless until you have the red card and WIFI. Battery dies, system freezes, game glitch, need to switch between classic and gateway mode you have a temporary brick on your hands.

He could use his retail carts in the mean time right until I reboot him to emunand?
I have his 3ds configured for no wireless AP so that he doens't acidentally update. I just didn't want tu buy 2 GW right away and wait until further carts/technology is released.
What do I need to install CIA files into the 3ds if I have a GW?

I am not sure on that one. You are supposed to run retail carts on classic gateway mode. At the moment I can't think of what side effects will be caused by running the carts on sysnand other than down the road as some games will require higher for area to run. So for now at least I guess he could do that, but befor you do I would get some other opinions on that. Hopefully gamesquest1 will chime in here.

To install cia files you need to obtain the cia or make it yourself and you will need the Dev Menu or Bigbluemenu. Those you will need to obtain from the wild, can't post a link. One trick I learned is you can only put one cia on the SD card at a time install it then delete the cia, rinse repeat. More than one cia at a time freezes the menu.

This is a fairly basic question, but I think this would be the best place to make it clear - opening the Plaza/Mii Maker/other-such-things in emuNAND isn't going to make my 3DS spontaneously combust, is it? . I don't use those functions so I can't comment with 100%. The farther apart sysnand and emunand are in versions interchangeability will decrease. I take the view that sysnand is dead to me and I leave it totally clean. Just think of how complex things can get after six months or a year if you are playing in both worlds all the time. KISS. :)

BigBlueMenu is what you want, it's newer than "Dev Menu" though they are often called the same thing becuase they are just different versions of the same thing. I don't know what thorasgar is talking about with the freezing, as I have kept all .cia files on my SD card so far and haven't had any freezes. You don't have to though, you can take them off after they're installed.

As for playing retail games on sysnand, any game that has system version pre-x.x.x (x being whatever version his sysnand is on) should be perfectly fine to play. Playing it on emunand vs sysnand would just seem like the game is being played on multiple systems, to the retail cart. However, if the game was released post-x.x.x, it's going to ask him to update to the system version that's included on-cart (or, if he's connected to the internet, it might ask him to update to the latest system version!).

I was just wondering if anyone has tried a System Transfer from EmuNAND to EmuNAND yet..?

Once Gateway sort out the New 3DS compatibility I'm going to want to transfer stuff from my metallic red one to my New 3DS. In theory this should be possible, right..? Was just wondering if anyone has tried the same thing either from an old 3DS to a New 3DS or from an old 3DS to another old 3DS..?

I don't have any retail carts left. Would my older launcher.dat explain why I can't install BigBlueMenu?

You can stay on 4.X if you like.
All you need to do to update is simply replace the old launcher.dat with the new one.
And to move to the new SD card you have arriving you need to use the emuNAND tool in order to backup your emuNAND and inject it in your New SD card. Then, once you do that (You need to format emuNAND in the Gateway menu in order for you to be able to inject your emuNAND backup) You can just drag and drop the old files.

The emunand tool? I think I've heard of it, but probably haven't read up on it. I will now, thank you. Has anyone tried to run various emulators on the GW with any success? I'm kinda hoping to duplicate my dstwo in some way, if at all possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there hasn't been much progress on the emulators.
Of course there is a port of gameyob on ninjhax (You will need to install Cubic Ninja on sysNAND if you do not own a cartridge) plus there was that GBA emulator on github I think.
Other than that, don't expect some super duper quality.

Card 2: On a retail cart, the save data gets stored after the ROM, in the same
memory. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think gateway does it in pretty much
the same way: the save data gets saved to the .3ds file. To back this up, you need
to use savedatafiler.

It gets saved to the ROM...? So deleting the ROM from my mSD card deletes my save if it's a card 2 game? ôO Sure, I can just back it up, but I never expected my ROM files to get altered. Usually I just delete those ROMs that I won't play for a while and re-copy them from the same source folder as before when I want to continue. So, thank you for pointing this out!

Now I just want to be sure and double check if I'm understanding this correct.
My Pokemon X retail cart save requires PowerSave to export, and many other steps. (Don't care too much about having a 1:1 copy since I can store my pokemon on the Bank and retrieve them on a clean rom save)
My saves for eShop RF4 and SSB4 that are currently installed in emuNAND will need to be exported with SaveDataFiler before I downgrade then after the downgrade is complete I can import the saves.
Did I get this correct?

Edit: Downgrade Success

I backed up my eShop saves for RF4 and SSB4. Post downgrade I decided to checkout the incompatible saves. To my surprise both RF4 and SSB4 saves were still there. No need to import the decrypted save.
My retail cart of X shows as corrupted, but I already got everything I cared off of it, and was knew that would happen.

Nice thread.
Still have a lot of doubts:
- I started with a 9.2 sysnand
- I have super smash bros installed from the eshop
- I made a copy of the sd content
- I made a backup of the sysnand
- I downgraded to to 4.5
- I formatted the synand and the created the emunand on the sd
- updated the emunand to 9.4

I then tried to redownload smash from the eshop and replace the .sav, but it doesn't work (currupted data).
There is any way to restore my smash save?

Can you boot the save in sysNAND?

Hello,

im one of the "newbies" I have a 3ds xl running 9.2 and i will be getting the new 3ds xl next month when it comes out. My issue is i want to be able to use the gateway card on the new 3ds (hopefully the firmware that will come with it, will be compatible) but want to transfer all my eshop games and embassodor games, streetpass puzzles and mii settings to the new 3ds. Can you guys help me out with what is the best way to accomplish this? according to the nintendo website, during the system transfer, it will force both 3ds systems (the n3ds and the 3ds xl) to update firmware to the latest ( dont want this obvioulsy, want to be able to use gateway 3ds) i have not purchased the gateway yet(soldout) so it will be a new experince for me as well when i receive it.

so.. in short, i will have 1 3ds xl running 9.2, the new 3ds --firmware unconfirmed--, and 1 gateway 3ds card,

any help on how to transfer all my data to the new 3ds without loosing any thing would be greatly appreciate it.

You could boot Gateway mode on your old 3DS, make an emuNAND, copy it to an emuNAND in your new 3DS and that way you'd have a system transfer without updating sysNAND.

Thank you for the amazing guide, now I feel like a genius :P

Quick question: after downgrading from 9.2 to 4.5 I am not able to load the save of my retail Super Smash.
will updating the Sysnand to 9.anything fix this or I must update to 9.2 EXACTLY?

(Rephrase: is the result of the "console boot encryption method" different for every major and minor firmware number?)
