My current only PS2 memory card is 8MB, I am considering one of those 128MB off brand ones, but sometimes in the technology world such as usb drives, bootable stuff often takes up the whole drive and makes it unusable for other purposes unless reformatted. I find the guides to be vague on this, I am aware that installing freemcboot erases all content on the memory card, but is it ok if I put it on a blank 128MB card and will it just work? And also if I make the freemcboot memory card on a Slim PS2, will the freemcboot card work just fine on a fat PS2? Thank you for your the responses.
PS1/2 does free mcboot take up an entire memory card? Can it be copied to another memory card?

No, it does not, and you're better off using a genuine card than some knock-off high-capacity one as compatibility with third-party memory cards is hit and miss.
and can I transfer the freemcboot memory card from a slim ps2 to a fat and it works just fine? I ask cause I find the 007 disc method easier on a slim than a fat but I intend to use the internal HDD on the fat for backups
You can only transfer so-called "Multi-Installs", it's a separate option in the installer. Do you have an HDD in that Classic PS2? Perhaps FHDB would be easier for you, it doesn't require any fancy shenanigans with disc-switching.
thanks for the responses, I have never heard of FHDB, I will look into (but since I found finding up to date or relevant freemcboot info kinda buried in the past, mind telling me?). I do have fat 200GB IDE drive that HDLoader's website lists as compatible with HDL/HDA. Yeah my plan is Fat PS2 (SCPH 39001) with the network adapter and HDD. I have memory card(s) and 007: Agent under fire to my disposal. Whatever method is best for playing backups from the hdd on the PS2 I'd be glad to hear.

FHDB is a new way to install and boot FreeMCBoot straight from an HDD, thus saving memory card space and a lot of time. If you're interested in saving space and time, that's the way to go.
These are the only memory card you should be using (FMCB or regular game saving):

* Mad Catz 8MB
* Katana 8/16MB

Thanks for the tip, I nearly bought a 128MB the other day.
Single install only works on the system you used to install FMCB. Hence installing it on Slim then move the memory card to Fat will not work.
Multi-install takes a bit more space, but will work across all PS2 model excluding PSX (PS2 DVR released only in Japan).

Just put the necessary files on the flash drive and it should work (although PS2 can sometime be picky about the flash drive). File system needs to be FAT32.
I have found that the newer Datel MAX memory cards (I have several 32mb ones and one 64mb one) work fine with Free MCBoot. they use a custom solution (developed by datel themselves?) called "Gate Crasher" rather than adhering to magicgate. I have had good luck with these cards.
Good for you that it works, but I wouldn't trust a Datel card as far as I could throw it, at least not for any saves I cared about not losing.

so what is the max sized hdd one can use for FHDB for loading backups? Like do you recommend a certain drive in particular?
