Can a .3ds share its savefile with a .cia equivalent? And, for that matter, where exactly does .cia games save its save files in?

Final Questions Before I Decide If I Should Get Gateway
Okay everyone, I recently bought a used 3DS online in great condition... AND HOLY CRAP IT WAS ON 4.5!!! Sorry for the caps, but I assumed I'd never get one (let alone for $80) that just so happened to be within the firmware range. I never started looking into Gateway until I realized the gem I found. I've done tons of research, and there are just a few questions that I have that I haven't been able to find good enough answers for...
1. How is the Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire scene looking for Gateway? Is there anything that would hold these games back from being compatible with Gateway? I read somewhere before that Pokemon X/Y had save file issues, but I think that they are fixed now? I plan on using both actually, so can I have more info on how these sets of games are working in the gateway realm?
2. How is the situation of playing online working out? I read the official Gateway website that said that the feature was incorporated, but there was a disclaimer saying that there is a possibility that Nintendo could ban you because each game cartridge has a unique online "ID" code that would apparently show up as being copied. Has this happened? Has anyone been banned??? This is an important issue.
3. A minor issue: My firmware is 4.5.0-6U. The "6U" part shouldn't mean anything bad, right?
4. What is the cheapest OFFICIAL/APPROVED reseller? Does anyone know this off the top of their head? I know there are multiple ones that the Gateway company says are safe. I'm just in the situation where saving $10-$20 would be extremely helpful. The key word here is official, I am not interested in clones/rip-offs.
5. I am aware of SKY3DS, but the overall credibility is too iffy for me. Gateway has proven to be reliable with its many updates and its displayed dedication to their project. SKY3DS seems super easy to use, but only having room for 10 games is a turn-off. I would much rather go with more games and an established credible product like gateway. Gateway is cheaper too. Is this a good viewpoint to hold in regard to the two products?
I hope I presented these questions clearly. I really look to hear back from everyone, as I have put a lot of consideration into this situation. If my questions do not get answered here, I will make my own thread so people will have more direct access to view them in the 3DS - Hacking & Homebrew section.
Thank you everyone! GBA Temp ROCKS!!!

Hi!

I have finally decided to do something with my 3ds XL (4.2.0-9E). There are a lot of guides and I don’t know which one to follow to get the best CFW there is, right now. I also have a DSTWO, and I would appreciate if I could get some help to play a few backups I have.

What is the first step? Could you help someone as clueless as me?

The reason I never bought a Gateway was because of them putting that brick code, I they didn’t take any responsibility. So I really don’t want to buy a Gateway unless I REALLY have to.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Read this thread, it covers pretty much everything regarding recent events.
You'll find that in that topic your answer lies in this thread.

Thanks for the help!
Just one last question, do i need to create an Emunand before i install a CFW? If yes, how do i make one?

In the mentioned thread, read this part again:

  1. Make sure your 3DS is configured to connect to the internet properly before going any further. Write down the LAN IP of your 3ds for later.
  2. Copy the Rop Multiloader to your DS mode flashcart. Launch the Rop Multiloader rom from your cart and select "Gateway 4x"
  3. Copy the Gateway Launcher.dat to your SD card, and load it with the usual exploit. Select "Nand Backup".
  4. When it finishes, copy the nand.bin from your SD card to your computer.
  5. If you have not already done so, boot the Gateway Launcher and select "Format Emunand". Be careful, as this will erase all the files on your SD card.
  6. On your SD card navigate to "sdmc:/Nintendo 3DS/<id0>/<id1>/dbs/". Create two files in this folder named title.db and import.db . Put the SD card back in your 3ds and go to System Settings, and attempt to manage the SD software. Let the 3DS do its repair process.
  7. Mount your SD card on your computer. Make a backup of the card with Win32DiskImager.
  8. Open Hex Workshop as administrator. Select Disk-> Open Drive. Choose "All" from the drop down menu and select the disk with the size matching your SD card. Once opened, the very beginning should say "GATEWAYNAND"
  9. Choose Disk->Restore Sectors and select your saved nand.bin. Change "Starting Sector" to be "1".
  10. Now that that is finished, your SD is ready to launch the CFW. Copy the contents of the folder "SD Card" folder to your SD card.
  11. Launch the "Rop Multiloader" from your DS cart again. This time select "Homebrew 4x".
  12. Finally launch the exploit the usual way, and make sure to hold down the L Button. it may take as many as 10 tries to work, but don't give up. You will know it worked when the screen flashes white then black for a second.
  13. Download "DevMenu_2x.cia" and put it in the "Palantine CFW" folder.
  14. On your computer, in the CFW files, edit run.bat and replace "IPTOMODIFY" with the IP of your 3DS, and then run it by double clicking it. This will try to install the DevMenu onto your device.
  15. Reboot your 3DS and launch the CFW again. If it worked you will see a present on the homescreen.
  16. Congrats! You have installed a CFW to your 3DS!

Pay attention to step 3 - 9, those cover your EmuNAND question.
The CFW is the EmuNAND, stored from sector 1.

Hi!

So i did this step when installing the CFW.

Copy the Rop Multiloader to your DS mode flashcart. Launch the Rop Multiloader rom from your cart and select "Gateway 4x" on my dstwo and it worked. But when i make this step

Copy the Gateway Launcher.dat to your SD card, and load it with the usual exploit. It says an error have occured. What am i doing wrong? I tried everything but the exploit doesnt seem to work.

Hi,

This might be a stupid question but i'll ask it anyway:
I own an MT-Card and recently I saw a tutorial on youtube to install gateway on 3ds and I realized that the method was exactly like the MT-Card method... the launcher file in the big sd card, the GW Installer in the blue card, etc...
If I format my big SD Card and rename it to match the gatewaynand thing and substitute the mt-installer files with the gateway ones, is there a possibility to get gateway in an MT-Card flashcart "skin"?

Sorry if my question looks confusing.

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys. I bought a 3DS XL from someone in Australia (I'm Australian myself).

My gateway card came today and I'm trying to launch my emunand. However, all the tutorials stated that I should go onto my sysnand to ensure that I accept the internet TOS first.
However, once I try to accepct the TOS my 3DS throws the following:

Unsure what to do.

Hi guys, quick noob question. What does "card1" and "card2" mean? and what's the difference? I've been following some threads as of late and I can't figure out what they're referring too. Thanks again.

Card1 is the original format and it stores saves on a separate chip. Card2 has a spot in the "ROM" to store the save. I think card2 came out because of limits to how much can be allocated to save on a card1 chip.

What does the checksum do? Or rather, how does it work?

To understand the checksum fix of the PK OR/AS Demo, by Kaphotics,
I tried comparing the save files, before and after applying the fix for the modified save, of the OR/AS Demo, after changing my character name Orlando to something else.

In the source code I found:
Code:
0x170,// 9 [0x3C00] trainer data
0x3C00 contains the trainer data, there I changed my name, indeed.
After the checksum fix, nothing I can find changed over there.

However, the OR/AS Demo checksum fix says that the current "CHK: 517D" has been changed to "New CHK: 57F9".
Code:
9 - Current CHK: 517D | New CHK: 57F9

So with the "9" refering to the 0x170, which is apparently 3C00.. (Not 0368?)
What are these 517D or 57F9 values?

I found those values in the save file here:
LdaN82t.png

Does that mean, that fixing a checksum means changing the starting point of where the check for that part, in this case trainer data, is supposed to happen.

Not that would make any sense, as everything looks exactly the same from those points on. I'm kinda lost here, as you can tell.

I don't feel like creating a whole new thread over this...
So I thought I might try getting attention here. :P

Ok so I did a factory reset and went through the whole process again and everything was fine :)

I have another question. Once I install a CIA through DevMenu and it goes through the importing process, does it use the original CIA fine on the SD card or does it make a copy somewhere else?
