Final Fantasy XIII received a PC announcement earlier this year, along with various other Final Fantasy games. Released yesterday, gamers found that Final Fantasy XIII is locked to 720p resolutions, as well as being 55GB. Due to this...outrage, Durante (known for releasing DSFix for Dark Souls and GeDoSaTo for Dark Souls 2 and other various games) released a quick fix to increase the resolutions available for the games.

You can download the fix here on Durante's blog.

Of course, there are a few bugs that come with this fix as it's currently a "pre-alpha" tool.
Bugs Include said:
  • Some off-by-a-bit scaling issues, making the output less sharp than it should be in some circumstances
  • DoF effects are unchanged (still at original, low resolution – this is more apparent in contrast to higher resolutions)
  • Probably some stuff somewhere is cut off. I saw some scissor calls and am not dealing with them yet
  • Crashes when taking screenshots using GeDoSaTo
  • Rendering resolutions larger than 3840×2160 don’t work
  • Probably lots more

And this is another example of 'WTF SquareEnix'. Why would the game be as big (even bigger in fact) as the PS3 version while having half the quality for FMV, which are the biggest space eater in games? I thought you already had coded it for Xbox, it should be roughly the same archtecture, how did it bloat up so much?

People bitched about dual audio. They got it, but to do that the download now includes FMVs for both English and Japanese. Thank the weeaboos.

That's silly. Wanted to say they could have just used one video and two separate audio tracks, but I remembered the visuals are different too due to different lip-syncing. Couldn't they have used a decent video compression codec to save their lifes, or are they appeasing the 4K fanboys as well (yet still releasing it as 720p)?
Is it a decent port? Did they keep all of the unused content (including a prototype zone for a XIII-3 scenario)?

Why would anyone willingly play this again after seeing just how terri-bad it was on console to begin with?

To be honest I'm surprised they thought it was worth the effort to put it on PC at all considering how thoroughly lambasted it got.

I guess it was worth the effort because they didn't put enough effort in to begin with. Better than putting all the resources into a new game that might not sell and will need marketing and more.

I didn't have a problem with the game myself. I'm not blind to the faults of the game, which were mostly due to linearity of it, and the lack of most things that existed in other games, like secrets, side quests and stuff. Everything is a straight line to chapter 11 and then suddenly it opens up for a very short time, and then opens fully for the end game.

And that's not that terrible either. For one thing, I appreciate that they introduced elements and had you training at every paradigm and characters, so you can figure out what style you prefer to play as. I honestly think that if you were tossed into the chaotic mess that your fully unlocked team is at chapter 11-13, you'd probably be confused as hell. Something that was somewhat lessened with FFXIII-2, but I think that having played FFXIII lessened that blow maybe.

So it felt the replayability suffered, not much reason to play it over again, but I didn't think the story was to fault here. It was entertaining for me, and that's what I expect of a game. It doesn't have to be perfect, it has to be interesting.

is this "lock" so that PC doesn't excel consoles and makes the "main stream money makers (consoles)" look inferior?

Remember that "Shinra" streaming service they announced? The only reason this game even got a PC port is for that. The Steam release was just a side effect. The lock was less a hard lock, and more that they didn't bother to add support when they ported it, because Shinra didn't need it and that's all they really cared about.

Thanks for this. I was thinking why would they include video files twice, but if they actually redid lipsyncing according to dubbing then that's fine. BUT they could've easily made it simply audio only or even put it as free DLC pack for those wanting it.
People did want japanese voice acting, they didn't want 20 GB of extra space taken.

no, it's because they couldn't be bothered to edit it

Sounds much more plausible. After all it's been 4 years since initial release so PC release must have been afterthough and they are using in-house engine. Use of Bink as video codec also refers to same thing.

why would they lock the PC port to 720p when afaik the PS3 game ran on 1080p 5 years ago?

The PS3 version ran at 720p natively, upscaled to 1080p. That's actually the case with most PS3 games that claim to have 1080p support. In practice, it's not too different from letting your GPU upscale to 1080p before your monitor gets it.

I stand corrected. Still, it's been 5 years! Squenix pls.

You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.

I remember seeing the very first episode back in the day, and have watched every episode since. I used to set my VCR to record them even, shows how long ago.

@BigOnYa were you always up to date on the current events and issues of the time or were there issues that you first found out thru south park

Most of the time yea I knew, I watch and read the news regularly, but sometimes the Hollywood BS stuff, like concerning actors slip by me. I don't follow most Hollywood BS (example: the Kardasians)

@BigOnYa there were relevant issues before south park was made, that's why i think a south park prequel/spinoff would be great. Randy and his friends in their child hood

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, like them running in high school together, getting into stuff, and how they got hitched and had kids. And how the town of South Park was back then compared to now. That would be cool to see.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@salazarcosplay if they made a prequel, it would still be about current issues, cause it doesn't make sense to make it about stuff that happened 30 years ago that nobody cares about anymore
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's too late
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the older south park episodes about particular issues usually age poorly since the topic is no longer relevant

an exception is giant douche vs turd sandwich, that's always relevant :P
