To be honest, no one can tell you anything 100%
But it is likely to be <4.5 probably a 4.2... Just make sure its brand new.

Quick question - I'm currently searching for a 4.5 or lower 3ds xl. By making sure its new, that guarantees that it'll have the appropriate firmware (assuming a good serial number)? So its possible that a refurbed console could have higher than 4.5 (may be a dumb question but wanted to ask)?

Thanks in advance.

Here's a regular blue 3ds, and you can always download MK7 w/Gateway! http://www.ebay.com/itm/181514994400?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
and another, that ships internationally. http://www.ebay.com/itm/181510638315?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

But I'm pretty sure if you find a "brand New" one w/ pre-installed MK7, you should be lucky and get 4.5 firmware.

As long as you are sure the box 100% has never being opened then you should be fine.
A refurb console would likely be updated. You can also look for a second hand consoles but again no point looking at the serial number in this case, you need to turn on the console and check for yourself to make sure its not even partially updated

Pfffiu... At last, I finally found a second 4.4 3DS XL.

Let me narrate you this adventure:

Last friday, I received a SMS from my FNAC (french equivalent to Virgin Megastore) about a private sale and some discounts. So, I went to the store... and found two grey 3DS XL with a good serial. I took one of them, then I started to look at other items.

A vendor quickly came at me to make an invoice (no doubt for his monthly bonus). But to make the invoice, he stated I must put down my article on the shelves and ask for another in stock. He stated too that was a display unit...

I explained him that was one of these two devices I need, but if he really wants to make me an invoice I need one with a specific serial. He refused, argued me that was impossible to ask his mates to check it.

I formely did the same job as him, and I knew he lied me about all : the mandatory invoice, the stock, the brand new unopened display unit, the impossibility to communicate with the stock team about serial.

So, I told him, to this geek vendor, look-alike of "Joueur Du Grenier" with his beard, glasses and yellow palmtree shirt, to go f**k himself.

Le "Joueur du Grenier", a french Youtuber, inspired from AVGN

Three days later, so today, I went again to this place. All serials were peeled off .
But, the same units seemed to be on the shelves. I took one again, and rushed to checkout...

And good news: that was the same unit I chose friday. :yaynds:

That was the last store to still have GW compatible units. Find a console with the proper firmware in stores is really becoming harder. Even with a higher serial, there are not many more consoles. However, it is full of 2DS everywhere.

Wow, scored a Pink 3DS XL at my local PC Richard and Son in College Point NY for $199. It was an old ratty looking box, but the copyright was 2012, and serial was SW1276, firmware 4.4 to my pleasant surprise. I didn't really try too hard, but I'm sure it's getting harder to find one of these by the day.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.

Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha

@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
