If they've dumped the actual update themselves them im not sure, It can't hurt to try it as it doesn't require you downloading the update from the eShop, it may work, try it let me know how it works out.

Maybe. Depending on how his exploit works, you will need to be running emunand. It's a mute point if he gets it working on 4.5 (he's confirmed on twitter that he got it working on a 4.0 console. Here's his quote from his twitter:

Unless you started the Gateway Exploit. His exploit appears to require a certain game (which he has not disclosed yet) to start. Though the physical copy might be slightly more expensive.

I understand that you must be using scene dumps same as your console region to be able to get the updates. I have a US 3DS and played a scene dump of Pokemon Y which is Europe. Can I let say, transfer my save to US scene dumps to get the update? And not lose my progress?
Actually, I believe Pokemon X/Y are exceptions to the rule. If I remember correctly, the update for that game is region free, so if you download the update from the USA shop, it should work on your European ROM.

You did know that Gateway runs homebrew now since 2.2 Omega?, so no need to look for smealums exploit at all to run homebrew on GW, its been around for a while but just not many homebrew apps have been developed so far apart from the coin shaker thingy app. also that one goes out to Apache Thunder following his detailed comment to you

Well, I signed up just to help out people having trouble updating their Pokemon X/Y to v 1.2. The update fails with an error code because people coming from Emunand 4.5 mostly haven't created an NNID.
So, you must create your NNID before downloading the patch. This solved the issue for me at least.

You shouldn't need a NNID just to download updates. You only need one for free software that isn't an update. I just downloaded them yesterday on 8.1 realNAND on a brand newly-formatted system no problems.
