good, you give us hope! at least this method is confirmed as working!

Yeah I find it weird that 3 other people voted yes but didnt wrote down their experience.

Anyway I just read that you were wondering how to open the cartridge. I opened the card without thinking twice since i didnt care much about malfunctioning gw card xD but it should be possible to do soldering without opening it(I wouldnt be able to without opening the cartridge.)anyway... ehh. http://nl.tinypic.com/view.php?pic=14t80t4&s=7#.U1r6nfl_vHU
the cartridge is made out of two parts, (i will call it front and back). As gamesquest1 said, I cut the cartridge where the front and back were glued.
There is nothing sticking out besides the chip in the center. So you dont have to worry about cutting anything while opening it.(unless you go crazy with the knife) The edges arent thick but the bottom edge of the front plastic is more like hiding in the back plastic(god I should have called them something else. xD) So you will have to carve the bottom front out of the back since straight cut wont work.

But again, i would rather show the card to a (example: cellphone repair shop thing) and ask them if they can solder the pin without cutting the cartridge before cutting or soldering anything by yourself. Gl

So, I thought I should share with you guys what ive been going through with gateway instead of voting and stay silentxD.

So this time I decided to use solder wire rather than heating the 6th pin. Im suffering from essential tremor?(shaky hands) so it was like a hell to melt solder wire to 1 single tiny pin without touching the other pins. I thought I did a good job but apperantly it wasnt good enough. The problem wasnt fixed for me. So I kept trying to place solder perfectly over the whole 6th pin but even then still no luck. After 30 mins of frustration I decided to yolo and put solder all over the 6th pin, 7th pin and 5th pin. I filled the whole gap and stuff. so as you may guess, that was causing short circuit(i think?)

Whenever i placed the gateway card inside, the 3ds turned off. So I took a needle and scratched the spaces inbetween the pins a bit. And checked again. No luck. Tried to clear it more. This time the card was working but the diagnostic test failed all over the place. So I kept scratching untill the gap between the pins was perfectly clear and tried diagnostic again. everything turned to Ok!. So I tried to update gateway card and guess what. @.@ the card was updating.

Now everything works fine, I can play animal crossing(see link for image) http://postimg.org/image/8stz6t8oj/
I dont recommend anybody my method. Only if you dont care about screwing your gateway card. Hell even then I still wouldnt recommend since it might damage your 3ds. So its definetly worth going to a store or someone else and let them do the job if you arent good at soldering small pins.

I havent tried the card long enough to say if anything else is malfunctioning but I played animal crossing, saved the game, reloaded it and everything works fine :3. I wish all of you best of luck
LOL, kinda suicidal approach to fixing something! You were lucky that the shorted pins didn't burn out the fuses in your 3DS, otherwise you'd have had another thing to fix between your hands :) Anyway, I'm happy that it worked.

tl;dr Don't attempt this without a GOOD soldering iron!

Hey guys, tried tried the tape method for like the 5th time. This time, it actually worked! I used lots of tape though, maybe 7-8 layers (just over the estimated area), so I did have some trouble getting the card out afterwards, but the card updated! Once the update was done, and I managed to get the card out, I took off the tape and it works fine now.

. Did you happen to take a picture of what you did?

The tape worked for me too! After a billion tries though. I tried to take a picture but it didn't come out right. Essentially what I did was I folded a piece of kapton tape into a solid piece then inserted that between the game casing and the faulty pin then a couple of layers of tape on top. The odd thing was I had tried the same thing several times before and it hadn't worked but that time it did!

well, I guess I need to keep trying. I already got the card stuck in the slot twice, though... I'm afraid to ruin something.

p.s. can you please take another photo? >_> it would/may help greatly.
look at the video here http://gbatemp.net/threads/gateway-3ds-spi-fail-quick-fix.365436/, its not for fixing the 00000012/19 errors, but you could use the little cellotape tab trick to help getting the card in and out so it doesn't get stuck

What I find hard to absorb in this thread, if so many are having troubles with there Gateway cards then why not send them back to their retailer for a replacement instead of going through hard trials and tribulations just to get it to work!. That's what I would be doing in that situation, not messing about with sticky tape and solder irons etc..!!!

some people don't have the option i.e dodgy resellers, limited warranties ....or simply not wanting to XD

And even "good" retailers will often make you pay to ship it back, or even both ways. Really starts to add up and make you want to try to fix things yourself (not that mine needed fixing, fortunately).

I sent my Gateway back to Teensy.co.uk when it was giving the 00000012 error exactly two month ago and still haven't got it back. Every e-mail I send them is answered two weeks later, if at all. Now I'm really bummed that I didn't try reflowing it myself.
