I'd like to ask: the potential ban risks of going online with a dump would also include the simple use of Streetpass (e.g. for picking up Villagers in Bravely Default)?
well we can get villagers/use streepass without the online functionality in gateway, so there shouldn't be any change :)
(so, there is basically no risk at all, but keep in mind we do not know what data nintendo can get from our consoles... sony and microsoft get lots, for all we know nintendo might know exactly who is playing backups, etc etc, but, probably not ;) )

Ok well padding the Save to 512kb doesnt help with smaller saves, i kinda guessed it wouldnt, im pretty sure the 3DS always wants to use the whole of the save space it has available so it see's the padded 128kb save as corrupt

I apologize for going off-topic, but are you talking about the emunand method?

well, it's not really a method right? but yes, using emunand :)
but spotpass/streetpass, one of them, still works even if you are not on the latest firmware right?
(although to use the streetpass relay, you need to be on the newer firmware, so that means emunand)
ask what you want, don't worry about offtopic etc :)

Thank you for the reply :) I'm willing to wait and see if Nintendo has a secret banhammer under their kimono, so that I won't even need Emunand (and I'm still working on Radiant Historia on my old DSi, so...).

I dumped a Mario Kart 7 rom and save from the same cartridge. I renamed the .sav from the serial (AMKE.sav) to the id (0004000000030800.sav) and renamed the rom to Mario Kart 7.3dz. I can play online with my old save.

I would like to do that as well but in my old saves folder that I have copied onto PC before I went online I have not got a clue which is my original MK7 .sav file???

His method works because the save file that he dumped corresponds to the header in his MK7 dump.

If you were intending to use your old rom save file on the newly internet enabled MK7, there isn't a way to do so yet.

and fixing it solely depends on the aes mac? yes or no?

Since Gateway now supports two file extensions, shouldn't they have carried that over to split roms too?

Maybe they should change the split extensions from .3d# to .3ds# and .3dz# depending on if you want to enable online support or not.

I don't understand why you would like two save extension.
You have two copies of the same game on your MicroSD? one in .3ds and one in .3dz to enable/disable online? both using different progress?
The same game using the same save file is more natural, online capability or not.
What accidental delete did you encounter? (I haven't updated yet so I'm curious to know if there's an issue with losing save files)

Edit:
Ah, maybe it's deleting it because you create your own dump and had a save from the scene dump?
in this case I understand that it's not compatible and is deleted.
But it shouldn't be named differently because it has online capability. You can dump your card and keep it .3ds losing your scene save file too.

I always backup my savegame files whenever I put the SD to computer, just in case.

well basically if someone has been playing on a standard rom then switches to a .3DZ version the old save will be detected as corrupt and will be deleted. eventually i'm sure people will figure this out but having them save separately at least prevents any disappointment

Is this true only when using .savs from scene roms with privately dumped roms?
I dumped my Mario Kart 7 save and it worked with a .3dz version of a dump from the same cartridge.

switching from standard 3ds to 3dz doesn't really delete the save, right?
switching from the scene dump to your own dump does, whatever the extension you are using.

It's only incompatibility with ROM dump's origin.

Scene/own dump.
if you played the game as a rom and have progress saved once you switch to the .3dz format the save will no longer be usable

if you dump a new game that you played in emunand on the same cart the same that you dump from the retail cart *may* be compatible, as long as the save is 512kb or the game is nand saving, if the game uses a save chip below 512kb and you switch to playing it as a rom as opposed to retail cart in emunand the save will be incompatible regardless of if its from the same original cart

also nope ANY rom that has the .3DZ extension needs to have a unique cart id embedded if you just rename a standard rom it will show as an invalid .3dz file in gateway, also using a game WITH the unique data but named .3ds will not actually use the unique data it will be ignored and will act exactly like any other scene dump, and as such will not be able to access online services and will work with your existing gateway save that doesnt use any unique ID once it rename the extra info will be read and the old save will be incompatible as it is now using the real card ID and not the default gateway one
