SOLVED
THE PROBLEM IS THAT MONSTER HUNTER 4 DOES NOT LIKE SD CARDS UNDER 2GB

This means that for those of us using the sd that comes with the 3ds that was formatted for emunand will not work,This is because gateway partitioms the sd so that only 1 gb is available to use with the emunand in a hidden partition that takes up the other gb causing the sd to read as only being a 1 gb sd instead of two.
BASICALLY this means to play monster hunter 4,You will need to have an sd that is more than 2gb for emunand OR not have an emunand partition.
Thanks to everyone in the thread for helping find the absolute solution

Hi, I'm trying to play a back up of Monster Hunter 4 but it's loading into a black screen and I have to hard reboot.
Not only that but I tried to reformat my system sd card and when I did that, I lost my emunand state but when I did that, Monster Hunter 4 loaded.
Could anyone please help me out?

And monster hunter stopped working again?
Have you done all the usual trouble shooting I.e try a different micro SD, format the micro SD and copy the game back on....check that the game you have isn't corrupt or anything like that

Seems weird it would work on sysnand gateway but not emunand

Yep, I've tried both of my micro sd's and reformatted both of them.
It is pretty weird man. Do you have a Gateway? Think you could test it out?

I am assuming you are referring to the MH4 ROM found in your μSD card.
Do not select normal mode, select gateway mode instead and try to launch the game again

Do you have another normal SD to try in the 3ds (the card emunand is installed to) I don't have that game tbh so can't really test but I'm sure I have heard others can play it fine

I couldn't get it to work either. I didn't try that hard as I wasn't that fussed about the game, but I tried formatting the normal (not emunand) partition of my sd card and that didn't help. I didn't format the whole card as I didn't want to lose emunand.

If it really won't run with an emunand partition present, maybe you could resort to using a different sd card just for playing mh4, and switch back to the emunand one for other stuff?

there was indeed one some weeks ago, and before that one I made one weeks prior to the last.. people should really use the search function

People should also really read what the fuck they are talking about.
If you read any of the threads I'd find by searching you'd see that the only proven solution is to format the sd which is what I stated I did.

I can confirm MH4 doesn't work "out of the box"... but according to what was mentioned in the other thread:

downloaded a tool called "Panasonic SD Formatter" ... formatted with this tool and set it to quick format [the internal SD] and format size adjustment within its options.

This procedure was apparently successful in making it work, although I have not tried it myself.

Thanks for the confirmation.
I did use that Panasonic SD formatter but when you partition the sd card from Emunand, it reverts

ok, this might be a stupid suggestion because I haven't tried it, but could you try updating the emunand without using the gateway format procedure first?

Yeah, you can't really confirm when you have not tried it. Mine worked "out of the box", so did many other people.

What I meant was that I didn't try the "Panasonic SD Formatter" but I can confirm it does not work WITHOUT doing that.

And yet mine does, formatted with Windows 8 right click > format. You can't confirm without TRYING, it doesn't work that way.

Perhaps I wasn't clear, so let me spell it out:

TESTED WITH SD CARD FORMATTED exFat on SMALL 3DS, no special formatting tool used: YES, DID NOT WORK

TESTED WITH SD CARD FORMATTED exFat on SMALL 3DS, Panasonic SD Formatter tool used: NO, untested

Some people were saying it working on the 3DS XL - what system did you use to test?

I'm now really interested.
Why isn't it working for some and not working for others? player3 and justln, Please tell me the specifics of the system Sd card you are using and the micro sd that Monhun 4 is on.
I'm using a Sandisk 8gb Class 4 for my micro and the sd card that comes with the system for the system sd.
I would like to bring up another point. I tried loading MonHun4 when booting gateway from one of the 8 gb class 4 cards that I had and it did not boot even though it did not have emunand. It DID however have .3ds files on it since it was holding back ups.
