I ordered a white 3DS XL from an eBay shop and they have several more.
Delivered today, and can confirm the following details:

+1, before I found one in a local store I asked them and they said theirs was lower than SEx1153. It was one week ago.

Lol that's exactly what I did .. I messaged like 5 sellers with a question for the serial on the box and that's the serial I wrote though that specific serial wasn't on the list .. either way I already ordered it so I hoping for a good FW

does anyone know how to tell if regular 3DS from North America is under 4.5 without opening them? I have about 10 regular 3DS that I want to check.

I saw on the wiki midnight purple 3DS CW421 was 4.5 but they don't have any other information.

I have 3 purple with CW421 and I have 1 with CW723 but I also have a fire emblem one that is CW723 and i know that one is 4.5 so I have no idea.. anyone have any suggestions?
They all say 2012 on the box but i've never seen one that didn't say that.

live in the usa but bought a pal 3ds xl red with firmware 4.3 on it for $99.89 on ebay with the only problem being the sd card is jammed in it =P i think i got a great deal lol

I've learned so much here and big thanks goes out to all who make it such a great place!

So my local gamestop won't let me open a red and black 3ds XL. It does say 2012, and the serial number is SW1230, which I didn't see anywhere yet.

Any ideas?

You want to get 1278 or below

i think it should def be 4.4 ,my xl is 1238xxx and 4.4

For anyone in the UK (Accrington, Lancashire to be specific) just managed to pick up a white 3DS XL from Argos with 4.4 on it. Also, since the helpful woman let me have a look at all the boxes they had, they've got Red, Blue and Silver too that all have the right serials on for useful FW.

Just got damned lucky that there were still any left. All the other colors, going by serial #, were past 4.5.***
At the time of purchase, there were only two eligibles left including this-a-one.

Wanted to let everyone know I got a brand new 3ds XL today at Best Buy. Target is selling them for 175, and I stopped in to check, but the guy just said 'oh no way we have 2012's left' so I went to best buy. Guy there was more than happy to check, there was a blue/black copyright 2012 with SW13XXX so I didn't risk it and went with the red. I told them I wanted to play emulators and Nintendo patched it in 2013 they were completely cool about it and even price matched target.

I had to sort thru about 200 listings but I found one on Ebay with serial number pictures. I was able to verify that the package was unopened, too. $170+Free shipping+tax=$185

Well, i think i could share my version aswell
I just asked for it if they could see in the box a 3DS XL with the SW starting in 12. Well, i was hoping to get a full black 3DS, but they were out of that on a older model, so he found the red one, last one he had and i got it.

there are no NA black/black systems that are on 4.5, they are all past that sadly since nintendo decided to delay that color release for what ever reason

That said, if you've got the tools, you could always order a replacement shell and change the color of the system yourself.

I plan on doing that with my original 3DS as well if I end up keeping it.

The black shell will still run you about $45+

I went with the cheaper router and bought one of those black metal shells for $3
