[Xbone] Retail to Devkit conversion!?

That's right, some folks at Logic Sunrise have figured out how to access the developer menu of the XBone.

Ofcourse this isn't of any use for the avarage consumer but it could help small indie devs who can't afford a full devkit with their games.

Erm...why should they make it harder than that? I can understand how large gaming companies feel kind of cheated if they forked out lots of money for a dev kit, but since this was already known, they don't have much to complain about either...

maybe they didn't feel cheated, maybe they have SDK to work with unlike us, maybe their console is cheaper since it's not a gaming console per se, maybe they got an official M$ support

As a refresher, every retail Xbox One can be used as a development kit. As was previously stated, this is old news, and accessing dev mode is probably in the manual. This is far from an amazing discovery.

Edit: Do note that the news article is four months old.

no one remember that, really?? they put stress on that point and yet the only two things everyone remember is the online DRM thing that isn't even a problem now and big brother Kinect.
I don't like Xbox in general since the 360, but you can't ignore that they have done things to make game development more accessible for indies.

People are actually buying this thing, and it may be behind the PS4, its still fucking selling.

Who the fuck are you talking to? No one has been bad mouthing the XBone in here, nor in most of the XBone news posts. Microsoft fixed most of the stuff everyone was complaining about, hence no one is complaining anymore (besides those saying it has no games to get at launch, but that's true for every console, so that's hardly even a complaint).

Anyways...this is a nice feature, I haven't kept up with the XBone features or anything so I haven't heard about this before.

This is actually sort of interesting. While they announced that every Xbone would be a development kit (and as I understand it, the only development kit), I assumed that you would need some sort of activation from Microsoft. The fact that you can do it as a user is interesting in that it means it is likely possible for anybody to run unsigned code on their Xbone uploaded from a PC. Of course this doesn't immediately lead to a hack as I'm certain that games (especially unsigned ones) have limited access to system calls, and likely run inside some sort of hyervisor, but it is interesting none the less.

There is an ID@Xbox program organized by MS. Indie devs need to register before they can get any (authorized) use out the dev mode. The program isn't ready yet.

I have no idea how far along the ID@Xbox program is. There are many concerns such as privacy, security, stability etc.., that need to be sorted out before we can allow anyone and everyone to simply sideload an app onto their box.

Kinda, but I think you have to pay for the software side of the devkit (even if it is a whole lot cheaper than the devkit for other consoles.)

Since no one seems to have mentioned it, I'm just going to point out that MS said that doing this doesn't instantly give you a devkit and can in fact render your console unusable. But if your console does become unusable you can fix it with just a factory reset.
