Definitely leave the stuff about squid jerky in. It's one of Arino's famous things (he always keeps a whole case of them on his desk).

And yeah, you could probably get away with just calling him "Kan". Unless that's not who he's referring to (double check to make sure).

I would prefer to reference squid jerky. That's just the kind of weird, but believable thing kid Arino is known for.


If there are a bunch of identical or near-identical strings for these things, I would like to have unique ones. It may not fit the GCCX style, but I've always preferred them this way.

"The air remains silent." "You hear your voice echo." "There's no response."


I think "Boss" would be the most appropriate here.

I agree with Fishaman for all three questions, so there's my vote.

Okay, thanks for the input.

I'm still tearing through this (not a lot of time to work on it this weekend but I'll have a bunch 'o' time in the next few days) and answered some of my own questions.

About the squid jerky, I definitely have to leave it in. The sticks in the bag of squid jerky you are left with (after eating it) are used for one of the puzzles. I think I should go back after it is done and check on how I referred to it. In the game in Japanese, it makes reference to "Pickeled squid" and the taste with some characters, a random conversation about not having squid around where they live/work as well as it being dried squid. I can make those references as is in English of course, but I wonder if I would be destroying any kind of consistency by referring to the squid jerky in so many different ways.

For my next question. When I am done with this Adventure text, are the testers (I remember who asked I believe) anxious to try this out right away? It will be in pretty rough shape if I give it right away and it won't have the RPG text (well, a tiny bit; mostly battle phrases). The displays will be blatantly wrong (off-center; too much per line, tried to fit too many lines of text on a page, that kind of thing), the in-game manuals won't be done except for the ones from the Shop and all the in-game magazines (which in turn help with the challenges anyway), and the menus won't be done...and the little clipart used in the magazines/manuals and the "Cleared" screen when you complete a challenge. What is done is all the Arino conversation in the real world as well as the floating head, the telephone conversations, the discussions and banter, the main challenges/descriptions, all the games in-game except for the RPG which will only have small parts and possibly other things I'm forgetting at the moment. In short, it should be enough to get you through the main game from beginning to end (The RPG challenges aren't so bad or hard and the in-game magazines can help with the challenges, too)

I can take a bit of a "break" to fix the worst errors before handing it out but I wondered if it was a better use of time to let the testers suffer those proofreading pains while I work on the RPG and some of the other graphics (and the last of the in-game manuals)...and the extra challenges from the Daily challege (many of them share the same wording but there are an awful lot of little files)

I think its better the sooner, since you can polish the text AFTER all the corrections to the translation are done, not before (may cause you to double-fix).
And as you say, It would be more efficient because you will be working on the rest of the stuff.
I guess we will be checking on spelling/gramatical/context errors, not so much alignment or technical bugs (unless you decide to polish it, that is).

Okay, fair enough. I actually think it would be a good idea to point out everything though, including formatting. Yes, I know there will already be a number of formatting issues but it helps me fix things faster if I know just what and where to fix. The first pass check will probably be chalk full of little things. It seems almost cruel to try and ask the beta testers (alpha?) to check so much which is why I proposed at least fixing the most aggregious errors but if people want to get their hands on this as soon as possible and are willing to tolerate a rough first build, I'm okay with that. There are no egos; I just want to follow a plan that will lead to a better final result that is also at least somewhat time efficient in relation to the currently ongoing work.

Speaking of which, here is what I've been doing:

Okay, in the Adventures (both of them) I have all of the "think" options, dialogue in the map screens (not much there), the intros for both games, the ending of the first and most of the second, common dialogue (you can't use that now, there is nobody here, etc) and that leaves the dialogue directly related to the main story. There is still a fair bit to do, though, especially since there are individual files that are over 30kb of solid text...ouch.

I am a bit concerned about consistency since the text is scattered throughout files but in a general sense I am thinking about the definitive titles for each of the mysteries in-game. I can do search/replace easy enough but some are complicated. For example one can be literally translated as "One missing". The original team referred to it as "Not enough" and "Not all there" in a general sense though in the game the fact that only "one" of something is missing is an important point to the grand story later on. There are others like the "Crying/Whining Machine" (specifically, gears I think) but you get the idea. I think with the beta testers I'll chat to see what they think works best in-game when they play it.

Out of the 1089 files I have just under 700 done (there are about 400 files left)

This still feels like I'm putting together a fractal jigsaw puzzle. Who knows how it will look when I finally see all the pieces in place. Should be fun, though.

Oh, and in other good news, I have received an offer of help with the translation so I passed over some files just to show what he was getting into.

There are a ton of files for the daily challenges and their descriptions but a lot of that is copy/paste with a number or so changed, so it should be more tedious than anything.

Finally, I noticed the title screen for Triotos DX is a B&W image that has color applied to it after...it's a bit hard to explain but I'll try messing with it and if it fails spectacularly Ill have an amusing image to share.

Speaking of which, I could post a few adventure game shots though I may be risking spoiling the story, especially if I use images from the second part.

Okay, my brane is fryd so I must fight to bed right now and get my kids to do the same.

Really appreciate all the hard work - the first game was one of my favs on the DS and I was gutted that the sequel was never released in English - YOU ARE A GOD!

Okay, I have made slight progress but I did some important things I needed to catch up on. For one, I took the translated text I had and put it in the game so I can see how it looks (and how the spacing and positioning is messed up on most of them but at least it all works).

I also committed all the changes to the SVN repository I have set up so should total and complete disaster befall me, the project can continue from this exact spot.

For your enjoyment I'll put up some of the screenshots of the Adventure games. I'll try to keep it spoiler-free...mostly...well, nothing that would give away any key puzzles of the game or anything

*NOTE* Some of these shots have awkard spacing and positioning and the translation might need some touching in spots (e.g. How's your work going :/ Maybe "job" would be better or just changing it altogether like "How are you doing these days?" or something. You beta testers can work something out, perhaps; I'm just trying to piece all the puzzle together right now). I'm just showing you want I see "as is" as I run it right now:

(The title screen doesn't have the English title in the 2nd part yet. I think it is just a repeat of what we did for Part 1 but I'll get to that later)

The translation is looking great, as you say there are some positioning issues but it's playable and it doesn't hurt the translation itself.
I think, in the final pic, 'No time for play' could be changed to 'No time to play' ?

Definitely agree here.

I think, in the final pic, 'No time for play' could be changed to 'No time to play' ?
I think it's better as it is. "for play" means general slacking, while "to play" sounds like there's something specific to play.
Unless there is something specific, that is.

Even so, you do have to beat the first game to play the second.

Erm...you'll have to wipe your brain somehow.

The fact he (and you) are in jail is a very minor point in the overall story, though. What happens before and after makes up the grand mystery.


Edit> oh, and some good news. I have received a chunk of the adventure game to try out. Once I see it in action I will report more.

If you are still looking for alpha/beta testers, I can volunteer. I'm a big GCCX fan, and I've also played GCCX2 through all of the challenges (I only know a few words of Japanese) as well as cleared all games up to Guadia Quest Saga. I got half way through Guadia Quest Saga, but decided to stop playing until this translation is released.

Okay, I'll keep that in mind.

So yeah, both the Adventure and RPG are chugging along (still...hey, these things take time)

On another front I put all of the Daily Challenge text (original Japanese) into a single file. There is a lot of text here too, but fortunately a lot of it can be done with copy/paste and changing some numbers per entry.

EDIT> Actually, I finished about 2/3 of it just messing around with it tonight, so this is something I won't need extra help with apart from making sure the text all fits on the screen in the end. This will be a fairly quick 360 lbs files when finished. I can probably finish this all off by tomorrow and get it out of the way, actually.

Been lurking for a while now. Wanted to drop in and say "Thanks so much for all your efforts!" The first game was one of my favorites and I was incredibly bummed to find out the sequel would never be localized. You're doing something really amazing by making it happen. Thanks again and keep at it!

The image format itself isn't open-able with Photoshop (neither is the text editable with Microsoft Word.. it isn't that easy), it's more involved and a bit complicated, but explained in the first four pages of this thread.
