Well unless they fixed it recently OPL has problems with Deus Ex, specifically sometimes it will fail to load a save or new area and dump you back at the title screen. Have there been any recent fixes for that?

I'm not really sure since I only play the superior PC version of Deus Ex. B-)

Seriously though, I'm not sure - I'd have to look into that.

I have a 320 GB that is working fine with HD loader.

Haven't run in to compatibility issues yet, if I do I will try OPL.

I haven't touched my ps2 in some time (it will probably end up on craigslist eventually), but I did what blaisedinsd did and have a modified elf on a Sony memory card for Twisted Metal (ps1).

Are you saying you play twisted metal (ps1) game from your memory card?
No, Twisted Metal save file is on the memory card. When the PS2 detects Twisted Metal in the DVD drive, it boots to a program with all the PS2 games that are on the hard drive.

As far as I recall an entirely unmodified ps2 by itself, cannot install backups onto HDD. You need to trick or bypass the optical drive.
Several ways to do that. Modchip, slide card, flip top, network transfer, or PC.

Unless I'm mistaken?

Not all drives will fit without modifying the adapter, I have a few Western Digital drives that don't line up.

FreeMcBoot is not required if you're using a network adapter and internal hard drive. Google "PS2 Free HDBoot".

PS2 modding scene is dead. I think you'll be lucky these days if you can find a decent chip.

I was modding with Crystal chip last when games were still being released and the developer of that chip was reading the official forum set up for it. It is the best chip out there. If you can find one of those, get that and solder it in.

Most people these days soft mod that system. There may or may not be compatibility issues with that and I don't know anything about it. I just like the crystal chip and it is probably the fourth mod chip I have had. It can run all the PSX games, movies, and PS2 games. AFAIK movies can work without a mod chip anyway. I also stuffed a chip in there to disable movie copy protection for DVDS. I forgot what that was called at the moment. But it isn't necessary since I never record movies from the PS2 to anything. I just wanted to break all of the copy protection that exists in that console for fun.

This is a great console because of its excellent library of games and fairly decent job of filtering graphics, opposed to arcade (such as Tekken Tag, it's better looking on PS2 than the actual arcade because all the graphics are filtered nicer). And there's good guncon games from the arcade among other cool titles.

So yeah if you can find a crystal chip.. I was buying those from somewhere between $15-$30 each I forgot how much..it was cheap... I'd suggest soldering one of those in and off you go. Otherwise try to research what people do these days for soft mod since that would be the most non invasive way to do this.

This does not make sense at all. PS2 uses analog video output, which does not have any DRM to stop video recording/capturing.

Unless you are using SCART or RGB signal, cause PS2 will only play DVD in YPbPr format, not RGB. Then a mod chip will be useful here as you can force RGB format for DVD playback.

Never heard of macro vision ?

This is what he is talking about most likely. You can't record a dvd with your VCR if it copy protected.

Slide card will allow you to do this. Run HD Loader with a retail game in. Let it run for a sec, hit install. Disc will stop spinning, slide card drive open and put your backup in. Continue with install. Or you can FTP, but that takes some time if you do not have the right files.

some IDE hdds vary in size, so be careful. I had a 320 and a 250 i pulled and the 320 fit but the 250 did not.

This, there are a number of drives that do not fit the network adapter properly, especially WD drives. You can however modify/break the network adapter to fit any drive. it is not that hard, you just need a couple of screwdrivers (torx 0 and phillips i believe) and some pliers. I've done this with a few drives I've bought off ebay in the past. They work fine, just make sure they are tested and give no errors. If you have to have SATA then the ide to sata mod is the way to go.

Do not run USB drives/externals for backups USB 1.1 is far too slow and cut scenes will make your eyes bleed and your ears as well.

Sorry for necroing my old thread, but I'm still at a bit of confusion.

My ultimate goal is to play PS2 backups off an internal hdd. To get the backups to the hdd, I'm going to have to use an IDE to USB enclosure (I have a laptop) to put the necessary files onto the drive. In doing this, is freemcboot necessary?

If so, then I believe I'll need the following:

A compatible PS2 phat
A network adapter
A compatible IDE drive
An IDE to USB enclosure (with necessary cables)
A ps2 memory card w/ FreeMcBoot installed
opl/HDloader program (would they be on the HDD or the mem card?)
and then the backups for the particular, legally owned, games I would want to play.

Am I missing anything?

I don't think you are missing anything.

You will use the enclosure to get games from your computer to the HDD. That is the only reason, you don't need to put any files or anything. You will want to use the the program Winhiip on your computer to manage the transferring of your games. The PS2 drive will not be readable by your computer with out this program. It is probably easier to rip all your games on your computer and transfer them this way than having the PS2 rip the games. (The PS2 I feel is more prone to read errors and seems to take much longer to rip).

I believe if you follow instructions for installing freemcboot noobie package you will have HD loader ready to go. The homebrew HD loader program will be installed on the freemcboot memory card and run from there. If for some reason you don't have it (the first time I modded my PS2 the noobie package had OPL loader instead) you can get HD loader from SKSapps and put it on a little USB drive and use free mcboot to launch. Freemcboot allows you to customize your hombrew launching shortcuts and stuff so however you need to set it up.

One side note. Be careful if your game image files are ESR patched or not. If they are patched they will not play from your HDD so make sure you unpatch them before trasferring them.
