Sony decided to cut 20% of the price ($110) and add HDMI 1.3 support on the standard version of the PS3.
Hopefuly Sony will also do the same with PS3s in the other regions.

Until today I hadn't considered getting a PS3 (even if it's still a bit pricy for me) but it looks a lot better than it used to.

Price cut confirmed for japan ONLY. A quote from sony saying they do not plan price reductions in other markets (though who knows -- nintendo claimed absolutely no ds redesign, about 1 week before they released the dslite).

Sony tends to run 1 year with the price at launch. To many critics i bet critized the price.

Now if only sony was offering something more then PS2 games in HD ...

It's like buying space invaders all over again

Someone slapped the remaining sense out of them.
Price drop on one unit in one region, claiming that the X360 is performing worse than the original xbox because the PS2 is out selling it and also claiming that in the first 17 months the PSP had a better adoption that the DS.

It's rather strange that this is confirmed for Japan only, considering that even with the high price the PS3 has consistently been rated the most anticipated system in Japan by a large margin. This conbined with Sony's comparitively small amount of launch units in Japan (the super-fans and early adopters would make sure the initial units sold out regardless of price) just seems like a strange business decision when they're already loosing money on each PS3. The HDMI is a good decision, though.

In any case, it's North America and Europe that Sony should be worried about. We're the ones who are most likely to pick up 360s instead of PS3s this winter. (or Wiis, but since Nintendo wants to be considered as if they are in a separate market...)

I've done some math and whatnot, and I figured out that Sony won't make any money this generation. Sure, they can push lost of units, but they're already selling each machine at a huge loss. The games are more expensive than in the past, so it'll be hard to get people to buy as many as they did in this generation. This is bad for Sony because they need to sell a HUGE number of games and accessories in order to actually turn a profit.

Basically, Sony doesn't understand simple rules of business. Whether the PS3 wins or loses the console wars, Sony doesn't make any money; they'll break even at best.

Unless it sells very well they could have loses like MS last gen, they lost something like $2bn because they bought all the components at the start and didn't save anything when better technology came along or when that technology dropped in price.

Ok, check this out...(btw this is just my opinion) The ps3 is going to sell out no matter what they charge for it. Right now the samsung bluray player is 1000. Which is a fair pricepoint for the enquipment you get. ANd yes its price is going to HAVE to drop once the ps3 comes out. But what most ppl are forgetting is that sony has been on top for a while now and thier not going to make some little mistake like an unpayable price point slow them down. When i first saw the price of the ps3 i was shocked. But i also forsaw a price drop before launch. Now will this trickel over to the states...I guess Ill go on record now and look like an ass later and say YES...The ps3 NO MATTER WHAT is going to have NO problem selling in Japan. Japan is Nintendo Crazy sop no matter what everyone is going ot have a wii...But the damn thing is only 250 bucks...thats like less then one week of work for most adults. SO seeing that thier dropping the price in a region that has no equal competition (360) and no chance of it not being a hit. dont you see this as a starting point for a global price drop... Also you have to think of the pyscological reasons behind this...If you tell someone that a product is new, better then its predicesor (sp), and better then the competition, AND you say it cost 600 bucks + a game + plus some cables, your going to get some attention. (Just look at all the ppl that bought those shitty INTEL EXtreme chips that were like 1000 bucks.)
Next if you really want to get your marketing machine turning its gears...you wait a little untill ppl are convinced that because you have a high priced product that its high quality, you cut the price and make it even a better deal (at 600 bucks the ps3 is an insaine deal if you have a HDTV set)

Its going to sell, its going to be big, and hopefully it kicks xbox's ass (sorry)

~btw...I hate spell check, punctuation, and grammer, I have to save them for the letters to my sister 8)
