I just ordered a 2012 model 3DS XL and am thinking about getting a Gateway, but I am confused about v2.0.
Is the Gateway 2.0 a different product from the one that is currently on sale? Or is it just a software update? Should I buy a Gateway now or should I wait?
I'm new to all this so I apologize if this has been asked already.

2.0 is a firmware update, buy one now.

Is a class 4 8gb micro sd high capacity by sandisk going to work for me? I just ordered gateway.

I have a class 4 8GB high capacity kingston and it works fine. Any micro SD card should work really.

well if I'm speaking about in a short period of time... usually a couple games.. hardly warrants a need for multi game. multi gaming menus were cool back in the 90s and then on through some years in other systems but for crying outloud...the roms are HUGE now compared to back then.. I mean come on. what do you expect.. just wait til they release this functionality and enjoy what has been given so far. after all, as we all know, most people whom buy flash carts don't intend to buy games whatsoever. only a few do.

No. I frequently reset my DS and booted up another title. I'm a teacher in South Korea and all my kids have packed m-SD's on their DS carts and use the functionality to the fullest. It's a very important feature.

I am wondering if a system transfer to the emulated nand would work, If so I can buy a new 3ds with the correct firmware, and transfer all my old stuff from mine used 3ds to the emulated one, so I wont lose my downloaded games...

Thanks again for helping me but.. Could I just buy a ton of 2 GB Micro SD Cards for each game, so the Save data won't be erased with reformatting one Micro SD card? Just wondering.. That's how it works right? Umm

Save data stores at the SD card of the 3ds, not at the micro SD of the GW, the save data wont erase if you reformat the micro SD with another game.

I wonder if the Gateway will even be needed when on the emuNAND. If not, then it sounds like retail carts would be possible in the emuNAND since the backed up NAND would be on the SD card. But what if the emulator is run from the Gateway card itself? That'd mean that the emuNAND wouldn't be able to run if the Gateway card were removed. Hmm...

I imagine that once the emuNAND is loaded, you could safely remove the gateway like any other cartridge. I don't see how the GW would still be needed AFTER the nand is fully loaded.

Doesn't the emuNAND run in GW mode? And isn't the GW card needed for the 3DS to be in GW mode?

Since accessing the eShop on the emulated NAND is possible, will there be any problems with making actual purchases on the eShop? I bought a 3DS so I could play Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies primarily, which will be an eShop-only title in the West.

so im still a little unclear. when this update is released, will I be able to play my pokemon x cartridge I bought from best buy in my 4.5 3dsxl without updating my console's "real" nand past 4.5?

You go into GW mode from the R4 clone

It doesn't go into GW mode but rather it does the ds profile changes to allow you to, changes that need to be redone every time you enter ds mode on the 3ds. Going into the ds profile settings is what actually brings you into the gateway mode.

But yeah, you dont actually need the GW card to go into gateway mode and I think it's relatively safe to assume this pattern would continue with the next firmware update (and by that I mean them not stopping you from doing these new features without having the gateway card itself)

Something I wouldn't mind knowing too but I dont think anything has been said about such things. I'm thinking maybe not since as it stands now, you can't play normal 3ds games in gateway mode (not that you'd have any reason to so pre 2.0) but who knows as they've clearly been doing a lot of work.
