no it does not exist that show hidden files is already ticked because I can see the .layout_version file
so now I have created an empty file named .nvmac.info and I am trying to find what it should look like.
Hmmm, that's weird, are you sure you are navigating to device/data and not sdcard/data?

There's two ways that I got it to work, a method KaleoOmega suggested (which he/she will post later) and another way. This method works with a rooted android on 4.2.2 (with SuperSu):

1. Download WifiTether 3.4 here
2. Change your SSID to 'attwifi'
3. Check MAC address spoof and enter a MAC address available here
4. Enable data connection on your phone and start tethering.
5. It should attach to your 3DS and the magical green light of glory will flash.
6. Let the guilt of manipulating the awesome relay feature sink in.

Carnt get this method to work on my nexus 4 running android 4.3. I downloaded the latest wifi tether (3.4) did everything you said and the 3ds doesnt detect the phone as a nintendo zone. Also i had a quick look at other method and i cannot find that file that you are supposed to edit tried 2 different root apps and both dont show it

are you making sure your phone is broadcasting without security and it is not a hidden network?

General guide for those having trouble finding the file on their Android : look around your system for a folder called "wifi" and/or look for a file with something like "config" or "mac" in their name, then open it with a text editor. This is how I figured it out.

I'm encountering the same problem with that method. It seems to work perfectly fine, outside of the fact that it won't display as a network for my laptop and 3DS. Dunno if it's hidden or not, but if I activate regular tethering my laptop and 3DS can find my phone just fine. However, changing the MAC Address seems to have no effect at all in that mode (in fact, it seems to change back automatically when I use it).

But with that WiFi tethering app it just isn't detected at all. Maybe there's an option to show the network through the app, but I sure as hell can't find it.

The other method... well, can't get it to work either. Can't find the NVMAC.info file, but I can find a MAC.info file, which lists the phone's MAC address. I tried the method and activated the tethering (with attwifi as SSID), but it didn't work either. Yeah, it did connect me to the Nintendo zone, but it was like that before as well even with my regular MAC Address. Also, not a specific Zone, but the pages that say that Nintendo Zone will soon be launching (which is regular as well). Changing the name to _The Cloud makes it connect to the current up-to-date Nintendo Zone, but without it acknowledging MAC address changes it won't give me streetpasses.

How? I have the same Galaxy S with the same firmware and I couldn't get it working. I had to use DD-WRT method to test only, but is better for me if I can use my phone.

It seems it isn't possible to spoof the MAC address on 4.2.2. I've tried pretty much everything so far. WiFi Tether 3.4e, a couple MAC spoofing apps, commands in terminal emulator, manually editing files, nothing works. Absolutely nothing will actually spoof the MAC address. I also do not have the nvram file (I do however have a bcmdhd.cal file in /etc/wifi, but editing in the new MAC still doesn't work).

So, for those having success on Android, what version are you on? If you're on 4.2.2, exactly what worked?

check your mac if you have busybox and a terminal.

on the terminal type something like : busybox iplink show wlan0

something tells me that you are in the case I am right now... you have a random mac and not what you told wifi tether to switch to.

Same thing happened to me. Maybe I'll read on Android 4.2 and look for a solution.
Also, after failing at changing wlan0 I tried another device on the list : wl0.1 because I thought it was for wifi tether. It didn't change the mac however.

Please folks, try to give more info on your android devices.
Mine: Galaxy S4 GT-I9505
ROM: 4.2.2 Stock only with ChainFire Root
Didn't work with android-wifi-tether, even using the alternative config shown by keyra, the application says that there was a error and couldn't find a log file.
Tried KaleoOmega and neocrux methods, still no dice.
Also it seems that ADB on windows couldn't access the data folder on my android phone, had to try to create .nvmac.info file manually through root browser, also there was no such file at that folder, seems that it does differ not only on ROM versions but also between devices.
Unfortunatly all my routers don't have DD-WRT or OpenWRT firmwares available, and I don't have any USB dongles to try on linux, does anyone have suggestions on wifi dongles that can work with linux methods?

so I've changed my dd-wrt router's SSID to attwifi and i've tried several different MAC addresses from the spreadsheet, and my 3ds is able to connect, but I'm not getting any streetpass hits. my 3ds is up to date and the only connection i have set up on my 3ds is attwifi.

i'm able to connect to the nintendo zone, but no streetpass hits have popped up on any of the different MAC addresses i tried. Is my dd-wrt not applying the spoofed MAC addresses properly?
