So I've had my refurbished PS3 Slim for more than 1 month and it's randomly shutting down. At first I thought there was an issue with power but I got a new socket. I can hear the fan working fine but the system gets really hot and just shuts down. I have to remove the power cord from the PS3 itself and then reinsert it in order for it to work again. I was thinking of installing the control fan utility and tweaking around the fan speeds but is that a good idea? Suggestions? Thanks!

I would (or rather would have someone who does these things professionally) open up the thing, and take off the heat sinks, clean them off, then have new thermal paste applied (properly! many people do it wrong, use way too much). If that doesn't work, just might be a bum system, sucks, but that's why I don't like refurbs.

Yep starts with the random offs then it stops again completely. Both the PS3 and Xbox do this after a "REFLOW". Only fix worth having is a proper reball of both CPU and GPU.

Crap! It just randomly turns off every 20 minutes now. Should I bother trying control fan utility to cool it up a bit or will it screw the system up?
