And here I thought you English types were the epitome of sophistication and class. Bah, savages, all (but 0.5%) of you!

It's honestly not that surprising given the average temperature we have -

The UK mean temperature of 8.8 °C was 0.1 °C below the 1981-2010 average. It is worth noting that only 2 years (2010 and 2012) of the last 16 have had annual temperatures below this average

I'll invite you to try italian temperature, we usually have 30-35° C in summer (and I mean the temperature you feel because of humidity, not the one from the thermometer). :\

Still a lot different then the heat in the UK.

Been to Italy loads of times so I know what the weather is like over there ;p

Meanwhile in Australia, Max 46°c on summer. Most things are okay, except for the southern star and bush fires but you get my drift.

Mmmm but it's Australia we're talking about. I mean most of your casualties are from giant spiders n wutnot.

90?

it was 107 here last week (when humidity factored in) and I think only a dog died
I just cant see how that many people died from it,
I mean what were they doing, standing in the middle of the street in a heavy coat and staring at the sun?

I mean what were they doing, standing in the middle of the street in a heavy coat and staring at the sun?

Old people inside of houses built and insulated to retain heat, and unaccustomed to keeping hydrated to deal with the temperatures. And probably dressed inappropriately too.
Babies getting sunstroke.

Most people here just get confused when the weather is nice for more than a day or two. If the weather is nice where you are and you notice someone dressed inappropriately, sweating with a puzzled looking upon their face, chances are they're British.

How can that temperature kill? I was doing cardio in 40 degrees Celcius with extremely humid conditions. We had a humidex warning too.

Individual people react differently to extreme heat or cold. The same goes for collectives of people (people from hot/cold/mild regions of the world).

I can easily walk around in shorts and t-shirt even during winter (while others stare at me weirdly because they have to wear heavy coats and are still cold) without feeling uncomfortable or getting sick. The only bad thing about winter is public transport failing (but then again, they fail during every season, and every year they act surprised that it's suddenly freezing, hot or that there's leaves on the road/rails).

However, whenever it gets above ~27°C I suffer horribly and can't get anything done (It's almost 2 am right now and it's too hot for me to even sleep, let alone do anything useful) - It's like I'm sick for 3 months straight every year.
I'm pretty sure if I had gone outside today (hottest day of the year so far roughly 35°C) I would have collapsed.

I know this is the exception as most people are "summer people" and, thus, feel the exact opposite way.

Anyway, there are also old people, little children and sick people who all very easily die during high temperatures. These probably make up the majority of those deaths.

That's me, circa July 2003, in Malta, in a fleece.

Holy crap. That's thicker clothing than I wear during german winter.
Having been to Malta once, I'm pretty I would have fallen over dead the instant I stepped out of the building in those clothes.

Are people seriously to stupid to forget how climates work? ._.

The closer you are to the equator, the different the heat feels.
Same goes for different climates.
Tropical climate with 30c is different from a sea climate with 30c.

Whoa! No need to use harsh words. We (I) understand the difference, but still feel like sharing our experience on the matter. It's that simple.

Wasn't meant to be insulting in anyway ;]
But I get the feel that a lot of people forget about how the weather actually works.

30c in Norway for example is a lot different then 45c in Algeria.
You basically can't compare different temperatures from different regions and climates.

WOW :( I was up a ladder in 92 degree Fahrenheit weather last Thursday, installing Cable TV drops. I was about to puke that day (from the ladder) so I feel terribly sorry for those 760 people. I think this is a lesson for me to be extra careful this Summer season.

90 degrees can kill in Seattle and other parts of the Northwest but they have AC like everyone else in America, but 0.5% in the UK not having AC, dear lord that problem needs to be fixed, it should've been fixed years ago since global warming was confirmed to exist.

Tree hugger!

LOL, j/k. Seriously though, I'm pretty sure most governments still largely ignore global warming willfully regardless of evidence. There are steps some people take, sure, but the industrial lobbyists usually won't have anything of it.

I feel sorry for my nan. My house keeps fairly cool during the summer but is also well insulated during the winter. I visit her house and can barely breathe, it's so hot. The government provide free insulation to the elderly to keep their houses warm but don't think of the effects during the warm months. They should provide AC too.

90F is enough to kill? Man, my room gets up to 97F during heat waves, no AC here.

If your body isn't used to hot temperatures, then they will have serious side-effects.
Trust me, I moved from a town that rarely got the 80's in the summer to a state that gets well over the 90's/100's and actually can't go outside with feeling faint. But my boyfriend who grew up in this weather is completely unaffected by it.

Its true what others are saying though. Every year when im in places like Cyprus or Greece on holiday and the thermometer hits 35 degrees C plus I can sit out in it all day, no problem.

But here in England, when the temperature gets to above around 25 its horrible. You sweat buckets, your constantly peeling your ballsacks off your legs its awful. If your by water then its bareable but even so, I wouldnt recommend jumping into much of the English sea to be fair.
