OUYA, GameStick, Gamepop, Green Throttle and now the MOJO. How relevant will these consoles be?

Another Android based console from out of the woodworks this time by well known accessory company Madcatz known as the M.O.J.O. was unveiled by IGN for E3.

Madcatz M.O.J.O. Project:

Does anyone else think this is starting to just become a novelty? Will they live up to the hype or will it all fall short of what an Android based console could/should be?

What implementations will Google Glass have with these consoles (if any) and is Augmented Reality a promising new aspect to come from this new form of gaming or will it just be a neat little distraction from gaming we've come to know and love?

Firefall AR Demo:

What do you think?

I'll buy it when it's in the bargain clearance bin. It might be a nice XBMC/Linux box.

Considering smartphones are a progression of the social media explosion, and that Android was originally designed to be a smartphone operating system, you would think that an Android console would be about social gaming.
However, not only have Microsoft and Sony both accomplished that task, they blew everything Ouya and the rest had out of the water. By far.

I kinda think it's absurd how everyone's just jumping on the band wagon now. One video I saw brought up a good point. What do all these consoles do you can't already do with a tablet? Save for the custom tailored interface, nothing really. I agree, they will probably become something you find in a bargain bin. This Madcatz one seems to be a little more well rounded than the competitors touting a Tegra -4 Invidia chip and Bluetooth 4.0 but I still feel they're only in a market for people who play games on Android who want to play on a big screen. Not to mention the price point when MOJO actually does come out. Here's what's out there now:

Green Throttle: $39.95
Gamestick: $79
OUYA: $99
Gamepop: $129 + $6.99 a month

If Madcatz sets the price at $99 I don't think they would profit much for the hardware that would go into making these. Anything more than around $160-$200 would be asking too much I'd say. And even $200 is pushing it. Why not just get a tablet or save up and get a PS4?

As far as Google Glass or any clones that might pop up I think AR will be something that we'll be seeing more of whether we like it or not.. Who knows, Sony and Microsoft could even come out with their own peripherals like Glass if they wanted/needed to. I think $1,500 is an absurd amount of dollars for something like Google Glass but if the price came down or a more cost effective solution came out I think it could really be a game changer if it were implemented right. It might even give some of these Droid consoles something to fight for. For now I just see it as a fad but it's tough to say who'll win this new little console war going on.

If you preorder by the end of June, the console is free.

I know I just mentioned it for pricing purposes. I don't think I'd want to pay a monthly fee though. If the console was free that's enough incentive to subscribe to their service I guess. Considering the actual retail value. One thing that was mentioned was also that the Gamepop would be able to play iOS games as well.

The "Android Console" market is starting to look an awful lot like before the 1977 crash with one difference - all those devices are powered by Google's Android which could be their saving grace. The market is definitely becoming oversaturated with those devices and they generally have somewhat different control schemes and hardware so most of them will require dedicated releases. On the other hand, the more Android-based systems there are the larger the developer interest will be since porting software should be a breeze when they're all running Android... It's definitely an interesting situation, I'm eager to see where it leads us. My only worry is that due to the sheer number of those devices which offer practically the same experience, a whole lot of them might fade into obscurity so marketing might be key in this "Battle of Android-Gens", so to speak.

As far as most of these are concerned MOJO is the only one that doesn't have a custom storefront either. Just stock Android interface. I think that's cool in that you don't have to buy games twice. If you're on the bus checking out a game, you could get home and play the same game. Also 16gigs internal storage is a plus over some of the others and has a mini SD slot for expanded memory.

Bluestacks Gamepop and Madcatz Project M.OJ.O. don't have any specs to compare at this point. There aren't many specs to compare for Green throttle as it's just a controller. (It's wireless, has bluetooth, requires 2 AA batteries) Although I'm not sure what if any Droid OS requirements there may be.

I'm kind of used to reviewers not being exactly unbiased, but still...I really wasn't expecting that ending. :rofl2:

On topic...the creepy thing is that I actually expect this device to get more profit (or perhaps better: 'fewer losses') than microsoft. Of course it isn't going to sell that well. But hardware components aren't as expensive as they used to be, with the internet, supply-on-demand becomes possible, and projects like this can actually turn android in a gaming platform.
