Have you tried 8:3 naming (up to 8 characters in the name and a 3 letter extension) for the super mario games? For some reason they only seem to save if you do that where other games usually work fine. Do make sure to rename the save too.

that worked
renamed it to "super mario advance 2"
before it was "super mario advance 2 - super mario world (UE)"

That's well over 8.3 naming (21 character file name including spaces) still.
If it works then all's well. If you have issues then rename the ROM and SAV to a filename with less than 8 characters, eg SMA2.

The theme/skin and launcher are combined, to update:

  • It has a battery, yep its the soldered type (CR2025). http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x151/trikon000/IMG_140102.jpg

Original GBA carts had several different save storage types. Battery backed SRAM, EEPROM, flash. The EZ-flash patcher patches all of these to the battery-backed SRAM type.
The game writes its saves into this, and as Minox said, when the GBA is next booted it only then writes the save back to the miniSD.

While the GBA is still on, it provides power to the SRAM. Once you turn it off the battery in the cart keeps the data in the SRAM. When you next turn on the GBA it boots to the EZ-Flash menu and writes the save back to miniSD.
If the battery dies, then turning off the GBA off then back on at a later time will mean lost saves.

To my understanding if you soft reset back to the ez-flash menu then this allows the save to be written back to miniSD even if the battery in the cart is dead, as the system maintains power to the cart unlike if you hard power down then back on.
The soft reset combo is L+A+B+Down for me. I believe you can edit the launcher to modify the key combo then flash that to the cart (never looked into it).

I've always soft reset and let it write back the save before powering off the system (just to be safe), but I'm OCD like that :)

  • Ahhh thanks for the info! That is why I have heard people mention lost saves unless they soft reset it, and others didn't. Makes sense now. I wish my soldering skills were better, I would fix my old cart. The only thing I didn't like was it needs Virtual Box running XP to use the software to flash/manage the cart (can only use EFA simple and it is really lacking compared to other versions..this is EFALinker the purple cart). While I can do that easy enough (took a little bit of configuring but got it going) soldering the battery and replacing it is not a good idea in my case. I think I would do more harm than good lol.

For one thing, this does not matter due to the high spread GBA emulators have.

For another thing, Mother 3 and Rhythm Tengoku suffer when not on a flashcard. (You could use VBA-M or a properly-synced version of Higan or RetroArch, but that is only for the computer.) Also, the capacity to play with the GameCube (Even using an emulator for the console or using a TV-OUT would not activate GameBoy Player features or even the borders that the GameBoy Player had!) or even linking with other people (especially if the Wireless adapter or real-life/emulated game combinations are involved) is reduced.

Hey guys, are either of these sites any good for the EZ Flash? They don't seem to reliable:

- http://ebluar.com/ez-flash-iv-4-mini-ez-card-for-gba-gba-sp-nds.html

Both secure logos at the bottom of the pages are fake, but still, is legit?
______

Also, I contacted rhs.hk about the cartridge, and they said they'd have more instock by June

I paid for one on April 12th. I emailed them and they did respond with
...is in short supply and is expected to be available in April. To be honest, we dont know the accurate date yet. I am really sorry for keeping you waiting...
they are claiming to honor a refund if i want one. And I will be seeking one before the paypal time limit expires.

when they finally finish reverse engineering it, i'll let you guys know if its up to snuff [/cynical]

Let us know how it works out, it's always good to know of more sources to help those searching for one.

The Shop contacted me today via E-Mail, they asked for Details (They asked what my first and last name is - they didn't want to mix it up).
So far so good, at least the shop is not dead.

I will inform you if anything happens.
