Blacklight: Retribution

VraJ9A2.jpg

So, recently Blacklight Retribution reached its one year mark. Many cool features like Zombie Onslaught mode, Weapon Receivers and New Maps were added to the game in the Anniversary update. The game already has 127,880 members on Steam and 90,311 members on Raptr. The game is also getting ESL integration soon. So, you can expect competitive gameplay experience from this game. To add to all of this its soon going to be released for consoles.

Blacklight is not only a great example of a professional and credible free-to-play game, but it's also one of the best first-person shooters I've played. I am quite serious when I say that, too. This game is a serious FPS contender, and its freemium status should not diminish your expectations. I wholeheartedly recommend you jump in and give it a try. It'll cost only your time to give it a whirl, and I am certain that it'll be time well spent.

So go ahead and Register: Here

More About the Game

Wage war with advanced weapons and technology in Blacklight: Retribution, a free-to-play, futuristic first-person shooter. Deploy devastating armored exoskeletons and utilize lethal hand-held weapons in vicious competitive modes.

SUIT UP, SIGHT ON, FIRE AWAY

The Hardsuit is the ultimate weapon. Powerful but slow, this armored suit packs a one-shot, one-kill railgun and a high velocity minigun to clear rooms... fast. Only by using teamwork, heavy weapons from in-game Weapon Depots and the Hyper Reality Visor (HRV), can players overcome the futuristic killing machine.

The advanced HRV enables players to see opponents, teammates, Weapon Depots and Hardsuit weak points through walls, but at the cost of all offensive capability.

Play with Hardsuits and the HRV alone or with a team of friends in one of Blacklight's tightly polished game modes. Current modes include: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Domination and King of the Hill, but more are on the way.

I played Blacklight a while ago and it's actually pretty fun, good F2P model and some fun mechanics. It's definitely worth giving a shot.

Although "futuristic F2P MMOFPS" seems to oddly be getting larger. There's like this, Planetside 2, Dust 514, etc.

Yup Planetside 2 surely seems interesting. But, Blacklight is really unique... Fast paced action with HRV really makes it unique. ALso First Person Spectate is being implemented.

Is it pay-to-win?

Not particularly. As far as I saw when I played ( a while ago), you can typically buy a gun after like...2-3 rounds. Only for a day of course, but it's not too hard to further drum up funds with your fancy new gun for the next day too, or buy it longer.
Weren't any uber $ exclusive rapeguns.

^This. Most of the things that cost money are cosmetics. Other than that you can rent weapon receivers and weapon parts. And a lot of basic and necessary parts can be bought permanent with the in-game currency.

It's cool. Well, I'm a huge, huge TF2 (Team Fortress 2, for the uninitiated) veteran. I have over 1800 hours under my belt. And while I love the game and most of it's aspects, there is one I've come to despise most of all.

You see, every class but one in TF2 is short/medium range with low damage long-range capability. This means that when you have an interaction between any two of these eight classes, there are strategies waiting to be used and reactions to be had, each with a disadvantage/advantage unique to that class. So the game has you thinking from moment to moment about what you can do next.

But it all goes to absolute **** when it comes to Snipers. You see, they exist only to create instant-kills that happen far outside of your engagement range. In addition, even if you were to dodge their fire, you can still be wrapped up with a different engagement (such as one of those short/medium range ones that happen for 8/9ths of the game) and be killed instantly because someone chose that class and looked at you from a distance.

Here's Valve's post on it.

And yes, I played Blacklight: Retribution for a while. It suffers from much of the same problems. What a shame.

Understandable. ATM BLR has a Bolt Action Rile, Combat Rifle and Anti-Material Rifle as sniper rifles. Bolt is the best option for skilled snipers who can score headshots. But, the game never feels unplayable due to the presence of snipers.
