A friend of mine has a PS3 that supposedly will play games and DVDs fine, but won't play Blu-Rays anymore. Considering that was its main use, he's offered to sell it to me for cheap and I think I'll take him up on the offer.

So my question is this: if I do buy his PS3 and attempt to fix it, what do I need to replace? I'm willing to spend the money to get a whole replacement drive, but if I can get away with spending less on just a laser then I'm all for it.

Thanks in advance!

PS3 games are stored on BluRay discs (at least the big ones AFAIK) so if I were you, I'd attempt some lens cleaning before you swap drives/lasers.

you could try this
http://www.amazon.com/Playstation-Blu-Ray-Laser-Replacement-Kit/lm/R11U3Y4HDKLIQ5

depends on how much you would get it for, if it has bc, if its a slim, also there is a chance of ylod with the older systems
I'd get it for around $75 I think. If I can get it working well then I think it'd be worth it. It's a Slim, so ylod shouldn't be as big of a concern.

But do you think the lens by itself would fix it, or do I need a whole drive replacement?

How would I go about doing that?
